I got a F on my English class report card under the category of 'participation'.

That's the only reason why I got a C. I got As on all the major assignments, and all but one of the minor assignments, the other one I got a B+ on.

I kept raising my hand to try to participate, but the teacher never called on me, or is this not the type of participation that was required? The teacher didn't give me a straight answer, all she said was 'you need to participate'.

What did I do wrong?

That's really odd. I would personally go to your teacher after school and ask, "How do I need to participate more? I've raised my hand many times trying to participate, but you never call on me. I don't get how I could participate any more than that." And see what she says. It really isn't your fault that she never calls on you. Sounds like she plays favorites...

I've had something similar to this happen. I go to a Chritian school and they put how many church services we attend on our report cards. Well, I don't get to go to church much because my mom is always working and I can't drive yet. One time, I didn't attend any services in the quarter so it was marked 0 of course. But that's not supposed to affect your religion or confirmation grade. I was getting straight A's in both but under confirmation there was a C and a note that said "Church..." I was like, "Oh, h--- no!" My mom went to the pastor and got everything straightened out, but I still thought it was crappy of him to do that. It wasn't MY fault I couldn't go to church.

That's really weird. Do you ever draw or doodle in class, or do you always pay attention? I would assume you always pay attention. Some teachers do play favorites (which really sucks but there's not much a student could do about that) but I wouldn't want to jump to that conclusion. Would you try to ask questions if you didn't understand something? Some teachers don't like students asking questions but many do.

There's not much I could think of that would mess up a participation grade. In my school they made this ridiculous policy about 80% of your grade being based on tests and 20% on assignments. Hence we aren't graded on participation but we are encouraged to ask and answer questions.
Teachers aren't allowed to grade or teach the way they want to anymore sweatdrop

Your not the only one who has this problem. One of my other friends actually has this teacher who'll always put her assignment on hold, causing her to get F's in that class while she has straight A's in other class', and will actually hold her in during lunch to re do the assignment that she already did. The same teacher will also make her have a bad participation score as well. Everyone in the class stood up for her as well when the principle came in to talk to them.

I personally think the teacher's are taking stress out on a random student for what happened on their birthday or something. If so they shouldn't teach anymore... Buuuuut that's my idea lol

I agree with 13 Mockingjay. Ask your teach and see why she gave you an F when you fully participate.
