Esther is born to the land and the seasons. She is happiest in company but growing up in the open space of the countryside she isn't chatty and enjoys the silence's that fall between friends occupied with tasks of daily life.

Betrothed at 17 to a huntsman's son named Eric Flick with whom she grew up, roaming the skirts of the woods where his family lived. They ran together through thicket and field, fighting with sticks and splashing in streams. One summer they stopped exploring the woods and found a new interest in each other. By the mutual agreement of their families and as naturally as spring warms to summer they were betrothed until a fever took him the next winter.
Esther is old for an unmarried woman but the country folk know too well the loss of a loved one and only time will free Esther from grief. She took his surname informally after their betrothal and as Eric's parents have always treated her part of their extended brood of young people, Esther is no longer commonly known by her maiden name Crouch.
She travels into the Palisade once or twice a year to purchase things for the farm unavailable locally. The city confuses her, she wonders at the proximity to which people lives with each other and the strange culture of the city dwellers. It is fascinating and exciting but she feels deeply vulnerable away from the open sky.
