It was 12:39 this morning and God showed me something awesome. In scripture it says the veil that separated the Holies from the Holy of Holies was torn in half from the top down when Christ died (Matthew 27:51, Mark 15:38, and Luke 23:45). Why would God tear the veil instead doing something more dramatic like having it combust into flames so that it would get the message across more clearly? There is a very important reason as why the veil had to be torn.
In ancient times a covenant was not just a promise or a contract. It was something far greater than any of those. When a covenant was made the two parties would sacrifice an animal by cutting it in half, the two parties would walk hand in hand between the two halves, and then there was a pledge to go with the agreement that was pretty much "Whoever breaks this covenant let him be like this animal." Now stick with me here because this is where it gets complicated. There is a connection between the veil of the Holy of Holies and Christ's body. "Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh," Hebrews 10:19-20.
Given the fact that His body is the veil it had to be torn in half for He is the sacrificial Lamb as a sin of God's new covenant with us. A greatly overlooked detail symbolizes the very essence of what Christ has done for us.
