User ImageThe dark femme lounged at the mouth of cave and watched a pair of pups frolic on the grassy hillside. Not just any pups, either. Her pups. It was a novel concept, that Coyote should settle down long enough to raise a family. She was not a particularly maternal creature, and those that knew the truth of her would likely be horrified at the thought of her bringing up pups. She wondered what dear Hawk would think. Her sister would probably take it as a sign that Coyote was returning to the light or whatever nonsense she made up. The thought amused her.

If the truth were told, Coyote was not actually as horrible a mother as her enemies would assume. Her pups were well fed and protected, and she had a vested interest in making them grow up well and with kind feelings toward her. Of course, that was not to say that her methods were anything resembling "normal" or "gentle". In fact, her life lessons were rather cutthroat, but it only seemed fair. After all, the world was a cruel place. She frequently made sure of that. Better her pups be prepared than caught unawares and taken advantage of. Yes. Better they grow up strong.

User Image Sunlight softly haloed the whelps as the played. One such pup had a particularly swollen belly, piggy that she was, and stumpy legs that still had a considerable amount of growing to do. She toddled through the weeds to bowl her brother over, yapping at him as if it were his fault. Oblivious as pups were, the little one didn't notice the shifting shadow that lurked just beyond the treeline.

From the edge of a thicket, a golden wolf watched the little family and his chest swelled with unexpected pride. His fine tail waggled behind him as his daughter attempted to start a tussle with her brother. Suncatcher hadn't expected to become a father, certainly not so soon, but every morning he woke thinking of them.

A hapless hare dangled limply, one leg stuffed in the wolf's mouth. Suncatcher carefully laid it on the ground before him and looked to Coyote, as if waiting for her to approve the offering before coming closer. It was a custom he had taken to since he first learned she was with pups. Unusual, perhaps, but he was not inclined to infringe on Coyote's independence. Particularly since they were not formal mates.

User ImageThe she-wolf watched the male approach and reveal his offering. The hare was not much, but at least it was fat. If she were a more generous beast, perhaps she would express some sort of gratitude to the male for providing these little gifts. A lone mother would often have to leave her pups unguarded to hunt, but when the father was present, chances of survival increased.

Regardless, it was not in her nature to be grateful for these things. In her mind, he was only doing the least that he owed. After all, the pups were his blood as well. She did not invite him closer, but that was not her way. Instead, she did not send him away, which was invitation enough.

The darker of the pups growled in reply - or rather, he made as close of an approximation as pups were capable. It sounded cute rather than fearsome, but it did not seem to trouble him overmuch. He was not quite as plump as his sister - perhaps in part because of the recent growth spurt that had left him larger than her, though he still clearly had much growing to do.

Suncatcher snatched up the rabbit and danced over to Coyote, quite accustomed to her warm welcomes. He pranced a merry little circle about the she-wolf, then stopped and plopped the gift on the ground next to her. "Quite right, quite right! It is a lovely day today, isn't it? Why, your glowing beauty illuminates the very sky!" Nevermind that Coyote hadn't commented on the weather. The jubilant wolf danced another circle about the she-wolf, mother of his pups.

"Ah, and what of my little sundrops? Fairing well, I hope?" he looked to the whelps, assessing the pair of them. One ear was cocked askew. "They don't appear to be very symmetrical, do they?" he thought aloud, observing their differences in width and height. "Perhaps I ought to bring extra food for the scrawny one. And the pudgy one will have to do more running. Running stretches your legs, you know." He nodded to Coyote, quite the authority on puppy development.

The little female leaned back on her rump as her brother squealed a growl. When he was finished, she stared at him a moment longer and then launched herself towards him with flailing paws. The short one squealed back in reprimand and sought to tug on her offender's ear.

Suncatcher chuckled and planted his butt next to Coyote.

She chuckled at his one-sided antics, but otherwise paid him little mind. Instead, she sniffed at the hare and devoured half of it in a few bites. Then, she picked it up by its ears and tossed it at the pups to do with as they pleased.

The male pup shouldered his sister aside and pounced on the meal, aiming for the tender bits.

"They are growing well," Coyote said at last, clearly disagreeing with Suncatcher's assessment. "They will both get stronger. My son is just faster. I think he has more growing to do than his sister."

OOC: Sorry this took so long. x.x

As the male pup pushed past, his sister made a squeak and nipped none-too-playfully at his flank. She watched him, ears cocked, as he prepared to eat. The feisty female barreled forward, snatched the carcass by an ear, and with a great jerk, made to run off with the hare, which left the male with little more than a mouthful, if only to annoy her brother. It flopped behind her and was dragged through the dirt as she bounded down the hill.

Suncatcher fell over laughing at the sight of the floppy hare and waved a gesturing paw to the pups, "See? Already stretching those legs of theirs. That's why I only ever bring one hare." The wolf winked at Coyote and grinned in admiration at his supposed foresight.

The boy-pup elicited a squeaky snarl and raced after his sister. His longer legs allowed him to catch up with her. With a leap and a bound, he tackled her, sending them in a tangle of gangly limbs and rabbit carcass down the rest of the hill.

Coyote slid mismatched eyes over to the male, her expression dubious. "Shall I pretend to believe in your vast pup-rearing knowledge?"
