I went to a Middle Ages festival today and went by a leather workers stall. I found a bag that would attach to my belt and since I don't have a purse or satchel or anything I figure it a good alternative. The guy seemed very trustworthy, or at least good at what he does. Working away at his leather and ornaments until someone came to buy things. At which point he'd give them a reasonable speech about how to care for the leather, how to wear it etc. Like a concerned owner selling a pet or something so he seems to at least know what he was doing. So when I came up to buy my thing I was expecting this however my German is pretty rough so when this guy started talking really fast I could pick up little things like mystical and a lot of don't do this and don't do that. We don't learn any of that in highschool german. He gave me a little spoon pendant sort of thing as a 'gift' for buying the bag and tied it on to the leather. About halfway through I told him I was having trouble since I spoke English and he switched. He didn't really go over much of what he'd said before though but mentioned the spoon was for salts and 'mystic purposes' which may be a difficulty in translation cause I have no idea wtf that's supposed to mean. So basically, take a look at this thing and tell me if it's for anything special magically? It could just be some bag and I completely misconstrued what he was saying but I don't want to get any bad luck or angry gods or whatever by using it as a place to keep my wallet. I'd also like to know about the salts, is using different types of salts common for things like altars? There were a few stalls selling different kinds of salts there too. So I could use this for that if that's the case. Otherwise I have no use for salts really. Except on my potatoes.

It's all folded together right now but it's actually quite big when you unfold all the accordioned layers of leather which are held together by a drawstring.

Story of my life...

I wouldn't have any clue how salts relate to leather baggies. I would have thought that the two wouldn't like each other that much. The spoon is really cute, but again - no idea what that could be for. Hmm.

I'm not sure it was intended as a magical gift, per se. In the Middle Ages salt was considered a mystical substance, something most pure - our own modern usage of salt as as a cleansing or purifying substance negativity can't tolerate developed from this. Status at the dining table was measured by where you sat relative to the salt cellar, often large, ornate vessels made of precious materials to indicate how valuable the salt was, and how wealthy the owner. People carried their own cutlery with them when they traveled and feasted - your dinnerware was a display of your wealth as well. Having a salt spoon on your pouch is likely related - that you carried your own spoon for the salt cellar means you regularly expected to have access to one.

Salt is used by various paths to represent Earth, elementally. It is, after all, a mineral. It can be a barrier to negative energies, as well as helping remove them, and cleanse objects or places. Sea salt will be different energetically than kosher salt than salts with various mineral impurities from their locations. Kemetics place value on natron, a sort of salt&baking soda substance, for purification.

And culinarily, not all salts are equal. Sea salt that's been naturally harvested has lower salinity than mined salt from underground, or commercially made salts. Some types of evaporation create structures in salt crystals that let them melt or dissolve differently, creating a different taste. Some forms of production introduce things like smoke to the salt. And salts from different locations carry mineral traces that give the salt a unique flavour and colour.

Additionally, most people did not have access to anything that would keep food chilled. Salt was valuable because it was the only way to keep meat for any length of time.

It could be a gris gris bag.
They originated in Africa as voodoo bags but the idea spread and now many pagans carry them. They are for carrying spells, charms, enchantments on you, so if you feel like you need a specific type of protection etc. a particular day or week or month or year even you can have it on you personally at all times and switch out the ingredients and therefore charms etc as needed.
