The story thus far

Nearly two hundred and fifty hundred turns ago Pern was almost saved from thread. AIVAS had been uncovered and the strange relic of Perns first colonists was busy calculating a plan to end the menace that had plagued the planet for so long. It was not meant to be however as early one morning a meteor entered the atmosphere and neither AIVAS nor the dragonriders could prevent it from destroying Landing and much of the surrounding area. Many lives and much hope was lost in the effort. While some of AIVAS' teachings would live on there was still much lost knowledge that had not been returned. On top of that Thread would remain a threat to the planet despite the best efforts of the dragonriders.

Life carried on with little changing, the ninth pass ended, the Weyrs shrunk as the need for fighting dragons decreased and queens rose less. Riders did their best to provide arial defense from meteors and the like in the future, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. It was the south that was most commonly in danger and riders there enjoyed a bit more prestige as the need for them was more pronounced.

The Holds grew and prospered and the people of Pern continued on, using the thread free centuries to advance themselves little by little despite knowing that in due time the red star would return and they would one day rely on dragons to defend them.

3 turns ago a large asteroid connected with the southern continent despite a massive effort including timing it from every dragonrider the weyrs could spare.
Once again many dragons and riders were lost in the effort and those that survived returned to their weyrs emotionally distressed by the loss of their fellows and their inability to prevent the destruction that followed. The impact caused a series of earthquakes, the force of which was felt through much of Pern.

However it was what came after that dealt the harshest blow. Living inside the asteroid were things. Strange alien creatures that could not be reasoned with and sought only the destruction of those that stood between them and whatever they wanted. They come in a variety of forms, flying, crawling, slithering, each body a sort of semi corporeal mist. The invaders as they came to be known could seep inside another creature and control them giving them a fully corporeal body to use until such time as they abandoned it.

To the pernese the only thing that mattered was that the invaders could be killed, dragon flame would destroy them in their natural form. Should they inhabit a host body, sword or claw will destroy the host and take the invader inside with it. Despite their population being severely depleted , with the entire south being a quarantined zone the people of Pern have been fighting to reclaim their world.

Life will not be easy but it is in the darkest moments that we appreciate light all the more.

Recent update!
During her recent mating flight High reaches junior gold was attacked when an invader slipped out from cloud cover just as her suitor captured her. With the aid of non lust addled greens the invader was destroyed before it could completely disappear into the queen.

However several eggs in the queen's recently laid clutch have a suspicious gleam to their hardening shells and the queen herself grows weaker day by day.
Nothing like this has ever occurred in the past 3 Turns and while no one is making any hasty decisions the upcoming hatching will be carefully monitored lest drastic measures are required.

Dragons

The standard colours you know and love with a bit of extra information regarding how they've adapted to the recent changes.

Gold Dragons
Gold dragons are at the top of the dragon hierarchy. They make up about 1% of the population. Gold dragons are female and the only ones unable to produce a flame. This is because Kitti Ping engineered them to be the reproducers of the group. Golds are also known as queens and vary in length from 36m to 45m.
A gold dragon here has a mating flight approximately every turn to turn and a half. A Queen can encourage an infested dragon to fight back better than anyone but their rider. Golds are one of the keys to keeping as few dragons from being infested as possible. Golds are encouraged not to attempt to fight invaders in host form, it is preferred that they stay as safe as possible especially given the low population.

Bronze
Bronze dragons are the second largest dragons. They make up about 2-5% of the population at any given time. Because they are closest in size to gold dragons, they are the ones most likely to catch a gold dragon during a mating flight. They are anywhere from 35m-42m in length. They have the ability to flame with the aid of firestone. Because of increased strength, stamina and other physical traits, bronzes riders were normally chosen as wing leaders or wing seconds.

Brown
Sometimes considered the workhorses of the group. Browns make up about 15% of the dragon population. Browns have both the stamina to last an entire Threadfall and the speed (depending on the brown) for flight tactics. Brown dragons are able to flame with the proper amount of firestone. Some brown dragons may have the They are anywhere from 30m-40m in length and can on occasion win a queens mating flight.

*Browns and Bronzes: Best when fighting large slow moving invaders in their natural form. Capable of long sustained bouts of flame while in spread formation to do the most damage possible. These dragons can also fight infested hosts in the air. They may also fight them on the ground but are not suited to it and would be better flaming while on the ground than trying to physically fight.

Blue

Blue dragons are the smallest and most common of the male dragons. They make up about 30% of the dragon population. Blues may range in size anywhere from 25m-32m in length. Blues are nearly as agile as greens but still have enough stamina (the majority of them) to last an entire Thread fall. Blues will only mate with green dragons though they can be affected if a gold is in a Mating Flight.

Green
Green dragons are the smallest of all dragons and are female. They make up 50% of the population. Green dragons are infertile. This is to keep the dragon population in sort of a checks and balances system. They do, however, rise to mate anywhere from 2-4 times a Turn. Ranging from 20m-28m in length, they are chased by males of all colors. Greens also have the ability to chew fire stone and flame. Because of their size, they are the most agile and versatile of dragons in the air, even if they lack the stamina to last an entire Thread fall.

*Greens and blues: Great at fighting swarms of enemies in natural form as they can dart between them easily, excellent for doing close to the ground strafing runs of natural invaders down there that cannot fly or are in a ground based host form. Can fight on the ground adequately.

Whers & Firelizards

Firelizards

Firelizards (also known as flits) are a native Pernese species that was present before the colonization of Pern. In fact, Firelizards provided the genetic base for the creation of the original dragons. Firelizards come in the same colors that dragons do, and anyone may impress any number of firelizards. To impress a firelizard, all you have to do is be present when they hatch, and feed them. Firelizards do not communicate as clearly as dragons do, but they can communicate telepathically through images. Firelizards are reactive to the emotions of those around them and it is thought that they might have some sort of group consciousness. Both green and gold firelizards are fertile.

Firelizards right now are incredibly rare, all owned firelizards must wear a collar with a tag denoting what hold hall or weyr they are from and the the owners name if possible. Unowned flits and those showing signs of infestation are to be killed on sight. A person may have no more than two flits and must have permission to breed. ( icly it is simply assumed that if you have a breeding pair their eggs are destroyed since you can't very well stop your ladies from rising.)

Whers
Whers resulted from a failed attempt to genetically create more dragons. The creatures were considered ugly and deformed, heavily muscled with wings that were often unable to support them in flight. They were, however, healthy and proved to be useful for certain tasks, such as guarding holds and weyrs. Whers tend to be nocturnal and they are light-sensitive, their vision is infrared. Whers have a variety of personalities but most have a strong defensive nature bred into them. Whers are able to bond with humans, a bond that is weaker than that of a dragon and it's rider, but stronger than the bonds firelizards have with their humans.

Whers are Pern's first line of defense against invaders attacking in ( non dragon) host form. Their population wasn't nearly as depleted as the dragons and there is little the invaders can infest that cannot be stopped by a wher's claws and teeth. Pern is safest at night when teams of Wherhandlers are on the prowl, protecting, hold, hall and Weyr.

Wher's should not attempt to fight Invaders in their natural state as they too are susceptible to infestation.
