With the new hatchlings and all of the drama surrounding them, the senior weyrlings were practically unnoticed, something that suited Zareen just fine. She had been slight uneasy since the hatching, since throwing that knife even, and was spending more time alone than normal.
Things will settle, my love, her brown said, sending his serenity through the link to her. Why don't you distract yourself with finding out why the watchriders are here? Perhaps you just need something to focus on.
"Perhaps." It was a better idea than just wandering around aimlessly, and she couldn't exactly distract herself with work. It was her day off, and she headed towards the dining hall to see if she could find one of the riders in there. Maybe grab something to eat as well.
She grabbed a bowl of stew, a couple of slices of bread, and a mug of juice, and then found a seat across from A'vin. He had the knots of a bronze rider, and he was just as good as anyone. "How are you finding Wardens?" It was something to start with at least, and maybe if he was willing to talk, she might ask about what he did as a watchrider. Just for curiosities sake.

He had finished an interview only a few candlemarks before and he was sitting and eating, trying to digest all that was happening around this messed up Weyr. He wasn't sure if they should even call it that, but he didn't have a better name for it. When the female sat down across from him he raised an eyebrow. She was a brownrider, and while it wasn't impossible for a female to ride a brown it wasn't very common.
He smiled at her. This was unexpected. So far he had to chase down people to get them to talk to him. She was coming to him. Although he wanted to chalk it up to his good looks he knew it was because his position. "It is different..." he said with a shrug. "What is it like being a rider here full time?" he hadn't been one for long, but since she wasn't part of the watch it was safe to assume she lived there at Wardens.

The girl laughed. "I promise it's not so wacky around here all the time." She had been here long enough to reasurre him that, though with the new ones it wasn't a guarantee that things would settle down. She hoped that they would though, once people had gotten used to the new hatchlings and the events faded.
"It's busy," she admitted, "and I'm not even a full rider yet." She was hoping that her schedule would be a little better once she no longer had a hatchling to take care of, once he reached his full growth and they were placed on a squad proper. "I had more free time as a human guard, and will have less once I'm assigned to a squad."
She wouldn't trade the brown for free time though. "My name's Zareen, and my dragon is brown Zyxth."

He smiled and pretended to wipe sweat off his forehead. "Thank you saying that, I was beginning to think this place was always a mad house." he teased with a laugh.
"It is nice to meet you Zareen, I am A'vin of bronze Seth." he said with a bow of his head. "So you are one of the older weyrlings? I'm guess the hatching where your brown hatched was very different from the one that just passed?" maybe this clutch wasn't the first with abnormal colors, maybe this was just the first time that it was being publicized. They had shot one of the greys on the sands, maybe they had shot any other abnormal colors before.
Squads? From what he had gathered before they were like Wings, though he didn't really care for the word. He liked calling them Wings, it was traditional. "How many squads are there here?" he asked curiously. If he stayed with his mother there was no doubt that he would end up on one.

She grinned brightly, taking a drink of her juice. He seemed like he was pretty cool, and it was also a relief that he wasn't all that stuck up. She knew that some bronze riders were, especially to people like her, females who rode any color except green.
"Yeah, from the donated clutch. It went pretty well, much like any other hatching I'd expect. Nobody got mauled too badly, though I've got a scar on my leg from where one of the blues scratched me, and nobody shot the maulers either. Twelve of the fourteen hatchlings impressed, and the other two greens went between. No unusual colors but then again, they weren't sired from a blue either. Or in the odd way that she was chased."
She hadn't seen the flight happen, being a bit distracted at the time, but she had certainly heard about it. It had been the most talked about thing for a while after that.
"Let's see." She counted on her fingers, trying to remember. "There are currently 6 squads, of 5 dragons each. I suspect that once us older weyrlings graduate, they'll end up with another squad or two, and that should help with the work load. I'm kind of hoping that they'll just let us weyrlings be in squads of our own, but I'd bet that they'll end up rearranging the others so that they're a weyrling or two in each." It would be nice if they didn't, she probably had a fair shot of being a squadsecond or even squadleader if she was just with her batch of weyrlings, but if she was with the more experienced riders, well, it'd take her a bit longer to prove herself. And she would too.
