Yes, I'd say there is a "too soon". You should wait to have sex until you feel ready for it, not because a partner is pressuring you or all your friends have done it or whatever. When you feel comfortable and want it, then go for it.
I was 20 when I had my first time, and not in any sort of committed relationship. I was attracted to a woman who was interested in me, so I slept with her. I'd had some alcohol and was crashing at her place. She asked if I wanted to and I said sure. No deeper feelings involved. It was nice and we slept together for a few months until she graduated. I don't talk to her anymore and only saw her once after that. I don't regret it at all despite not being in a relationship or love or anything like that. I take a more casual view of sex than some people though.
