"To share your weakness is to make yourself vulnerable..."

By the time she was done, Rowena felt as if she had been through a marathon and wasn't sure if she had actually been much involved in the process. Despite the fact she had done little but stand there, be measured and sometimes put things on, she felt exhausted. They had changed her clothes, putting her in a green dress and heels so she looked a bit more her age and not nearly as so frumpy, and while they fretted over her hair, there wasn't much they could do there. So they simply had a few accessories to try to help in the meantime and gave her strict orders to get her hair done as soon as she could. Taking the advice with a meek nod, the young woman simply watched as the saleswoman and a fellow colleague packed a few bags completely full of clothing for her. Everything was neat and tightly put inside, to fill them up as much as they could.

"Um...I don't know if I can carry those," she murmured weakly, looking around in a bit of desperation for her master. The woman chuckled. "Go find your master and we'll keep the things at the register for him to pay for," she suggested, shooing the girl like one would a curious puppy. It wasn't quite surprising that she would treat her like that and the girl sighed, not expecting much else. He had said he would be waiting in the same place for her, so Rowena wandered back to the front of the store and was visibly relieved to see him there, too tired to pretend otherwise.

As she walked up to him, she felt stupid wearing a dress - and one that was more expensive than anything she had bought in her entire life, at that. That, and she was pretty sure the saleswoman had gotten her way too many things and it was embarrassing to have to tell him. "Um. I'm all ready. I think, uh, they went overboard," she told him sheepishly, looking down at her feet in embarrassment. "I didn't know what I really needed, so...she said she's at the register for you to pay," she added quietly, feeling like she was telling him what to do. He was sure to get mad about that, she felt, lacing her fingers together as she clasped them behind her back.

When Rowena had finally made her way back to him, she looked as relieved to see him as he felt on the inside. At least they would get to leave this accursed store soon. He noticed her new attire and approved of it greatly. "You look nice," he commented.

She seemed embarrassed by her attire and he could not figure out why. Did not all woman like to dress up? She even seemed hesitant over her other purchases as well. When she told him he was needed at the cash register, he nodded and motioned for her to follow him. "Come, let us pay for these purchases so we may leave."

As the two approached the cash register, Balthazar saw at least half a dozen bags surrounding the register. Considering Rowena said she did not have any clothing earlier, he was surprised she did not buy more. He would have questioned her about the clothes, but she still seemed hesitant to spend his money. It was an interesting concept for his mind to wrap around. It was not often that someone was afraid to take advantage of his generosity. Clearly she was not use to having someone take care of her, so he had to remedy that soon.

Walking up to the counter, the sales woman greeted him kindly. "She was a darling to work with sir, I hope you are satisfied with your purchases," the woman beamed. Balthazar raised a brow at her comment, if he didn't know any better it sounded as if she was talking about more than just the clothes. Glancing over at Rowena, he let a small smile slip as he said, "I am quite pleased so far yes."

The sales woman then rung him up and told him the price total, "All together that will be $5479.46!" Without batting an eye, Balthazar handed over his black charge card and signed off on the purchase. "Do you need assistance with your bags sir?" the woman asked. "Not necessary. My chauffeur will be here shortly to pick up the bags. Come Rowena, I believe we still have more shopping to do. You said something about art supplies earlier yes?"

When he said she looked nice, the color rose to her cheeks a little bit and she was confused why he would say that. There wasn't any need to compliment her and she really didn't think she did. Following the man through the store, Rowena kept her gaze lower, waiting for him to get angry when he saw how many bags there were. "They said I need to get my hair done," she added softly, before they reached the register. He might as well know what others thought about his new slave, she reasoned with a private sigh. Waiting next to him as he paid, her face paled when she heard the total. That was an obscene amount to her and she opened her mouth to protest, then shut it again when she realized he had a small smile on his face.

What was he so happy for?

A bit relieved she didn't have to carry all the bags, though she would have without complaint since they belonged to her, Rowena blinked when he mentioned more shopping. What on earth else they could need, she had no idea and followed him obediently away from the register. She hadn't understood the exchange between the man and the saleswoman, not realizing that it concerned her. As he continued and brought up art supplies, her eyes lit up and she didn't even realize they had. "Really?" she asked excitedly. "I can really get them?" She hadn't expected such a thing and her walk picked up a little as she cheered up. She could have cared less about the clothing, but the art supplies...

As they reached the store, she practically ran inside and went straight to sketchbooks and supplies of that nature. Rowena was completely absorbed in the materials - they were all much more expensive and of much better quality than the dollar store notebooks and pencils she had used her entire life. He could have sung a song and danced right next to her and she would have been oblivious, she was so focused on something that she really did love to and hadn't been allowed to for so long. Her fingers were practically itching to try them out and she began to pick up sketchbooks, testing the paper and how they sat in her hands. She was even smiling a little bit, finally have supplies back in her hands, and the young woman was clearly in a much better mood. It was quite easy to please her, if one cared to pay attention and try.

"Um - what can I get?" she asked him, not sure how she should even address him. So for now the young woman settled for not calling him anything at all and just looked up at him, holding a few sketchbooks tight, as if afraid he was going to tell her they were too expensive and to put them away.

This was the first time Balthazar saw Rowena truly happy this entire afternoon. If he had known this would have been her reaction, he would have brought her to the art supply store first. The child like wonder and excitement was worth putting up with pushy sales women and over priced items. With the long day they both had, it seemed like none of that mattered now. As Rowena continued to flutter around the store, Balthazar stood near the entrance content with just observing her.

Her file had said she loved to paint and sketch but hadn't indulged in it recently. Perhaps do to financial struggles he surmised. A part of him wondered if she ever even used these materials before. As was expected, this store only carried high quality supplies. He watched Rowena hold and touched each piece of merchandise as if they were precious to her. And to her, they probably were. Balthazar had never considered himself an art connoisseur. He could say he like something or didn't like something but that was it. Considering his busy schedule, art seemed like a wasteful hobby for him to pursue since he could not put the time and effort into it. As hobbies went, weaponry and martial arts were more to his liking. He liked pushing his body to the limit, to feel the adrenaline rushing through him as he beat down his opponent into submission. But to each his own he thought. Clearly Rowena was more of the creative artistic soul, so he would indulge her in it.

She was so wrapped up in a world of her own, Balthazar doubted he could snap her out of it. However Rowena finally did turn back to him. She was back to being hesitant again and that confused him. Did she still second guess his presence in her life? Or was it an issue of trust? If it was the latter, he could understand that. Rowena had talked as if she was used to getting passed over, that eventually everyone would leave her. He would just have to prove to her that regardless of what happens between them, he's committed to make this a beneficial relationship for the both of them. "I must confess I know very little about art," he admitted. "You may get what ever you feel you require to entertain yourself." And he truly meant that. There were going to be times when he could not give her his complete undivided attention. So it was best she had the tools to entertain herself for when such situations happen. And he knew they would happen often.

Rowena stared up at him when he said to get whatever she wanted. That was unbelievable to her. At least clothes she had sort of needed - this wasn't necessary at all and he was still telling her that she could do as she pleased with everything here. Her gaze quickly moved from the man nearby to the rest of the store, taking it all in. Looking as if she were overwhelmed, the young woman went over and grabbed a basket before going back to the supplies. There was no way she could carry it all in her arms and she certainly wasn't going to ask her master to carry things for her as if he was some normal sort of person.

Her fingers were trembling a bit as she picked through sketchbooks, taking a few after finally deciding on one she liked, and then went to pencils. There were so many for someone used to a normal number two and she took quite some time just looking over them, chewing her lip and finding ones that suited her. Then there were canvases, of all sizes, and she decided to get frames and a roll of canvas to suit herself, rather than prestretched ones. Brushes followed, then pain supplies, watercolors being her favorites...she was so immersed in being able to get what she wanted that she completely forgot about the man there.

Humming happily, the young woman had filled up her basket and was carefully arranging things inside it in order to fit more items inside. She had been too busy to be able to do anything with her art, and then she was broke - and then she had ended up as a slave and no one gave her anything at all. It was overwhelming with her and she almost lost her breath thinking about all the things she could get. Part of her was afraid this would be the only chance she had to get what she wanted, or needed, in all honesty. Setting the basket down, she pulled her hair over a shoulder and looked over a watercolor set. The colors were gorgeous to her and it was obvious that in her mind she was already planning what she wanted to use it. It went into the basket and she picked it all back up, turning back to Balthazar.

"I think I'm done," she admitted shyly, feeling like she was wasting his money. But not a single part of her wanted to put anything away, it was all more precious to her than anything else at the moment.

Rowena had seem a little more confident in her purchases than compared to when they went clothing shopping. Her basket was full of art supplies and again Balthazar was surprised she didn't buy more. With how enthusiastic she was earlier, he thought there was a possibility she would have bought the whole store. But none the less, she seemed pleased with her items and that was all that matter. With a silent nod, Balthazar motioned for Rowena to follow him to the register. Again the the overall total was high, not as much as her clothing purchases but high none the less. As the sales clerk carefully bagged each item, Balthazar asked Rowena, "I believe you will want to hold on to these purchases yes?" He could have called for someone to help them carry the items to the car but in this case he assumed Rowena would not want to be parted from items that brought her happiness.

"We shall take our leave now."

The walk back was quiet. As the two approached the entrance of the building, they were met by his chauffeur Phillip. Balthazar was grateful for having a competent staff, for Phillip had already had an umbrella out to shield his master from the sun's rays. The limo was also thankfully parked not to far so as well.

"Your earlier purchases have already been loaded into the back Lord Balthazar," Phillip had informed him. "Also you earlier messages have been passed along to the rest of the household and everything should be ready by the time of our arrival."

"Excellent. See to the rest of these items as well Phillip. Call ahead to inform Mia that I will be taking my meal early tonight" Without waiting for Rowena, Balthazar enter into the limo grateful to be given coverage from the sun's light. It has been a long day for him and he was starting to feel his body's fatigue and hunger making itself known.

"Of course my Lord." With a kind smile the driver turned to Rowena, "I can take those from you Miss. I'm sure my Lord is quite eager to be heading home."

Layla could feel her Master’s gaze on her face as she spoke. She tried to keep her gaze level, not turning away from him, but in the end, she turned her chin down, trying to hide the slight discomfort that came from his scrutiny. She wasn’t sure what had caused it exactly, but certainly he felt the need to looka t her for something. His simple answer also didn’t help to elaborate on the type of person he was, or what he wanted from her. He began walking shortly after, down the hall towards the stairs, and Layla simply followed. What exactly did this man want from her? Why had he been looking at her so intensely? Had her eyes changed color. That might have been enough to raise suspicion or even draw attention, though it was not under her control. Being a wolf demon gave her some usual features, and her eyes fit into the category. They changed with her moods and emotions, moving when she couldn’t decide what to feel. Instead of letting herself ling too long on the idea, she found herself moving faster to avoid any looks of suspicion form the guards and to remain close enough to her Master that he would not question the distance. It was only a matter of moments before they had reached the first floor, and Layla’s heart picked up a bit of speed. This was really happening. She was really about to get out of this strange place. And she would have to go into the sun and fresh air for at least a few moments. It was better than what she had been wishing for, for quite a long time. She passed a look at her pink haired Master, trying to figure him out once more.

He asked for her release forms, and she knew that payments would be made, and the Mistress would finish all the loose ends after Layla was gone. Instead, the brunette waited patiently for her Master by the door. He carried with him a briefcase, from which he took his pen to sign all the paperwork. She wondered what else was inside the case, and if it was essential to his research. Would the contents reveal exactly what he was researching? There could be torture device inside that thing, but no one would ever know unless the Doctor let them see. Layla shook her head, smoothing down her pants as she waited, hearing a slur of Russian spoken quickly again. This man did not seem to be in a great mood. Something about the way he spoke the words, and look confident after told her that he might be a bit grumpy, or at the very least, that he didn’t seem to like this establishment. Instead of questioning it, she simply followed on her Master’s heels, moving out of the Manor after him as she struggled to keep a calm pace. The moment she was outside, she took a deep breath through her nose, and closed her eyes, wrapping her arms around herself. She was so glad to be outside and smell something other than the stale air in the house. Her wolf wanted her to run. It was pushing at the strange cloudy feeling that was keeping it quite, but she wanted to bolt. Looking out over the open field surrounding the estate, Layla wondered how far she would get before her Master caught her. He was a wolf too. He’d probably be on her before she could make a good circle. She wouldn’t be stupid enough to escape. There was protection in being a slave. She just wanted to feel her fur again.

Instead, she was distracted by her Master. He was speaking of a shop and getting clothing. She nodded twice and watched as he rakes fingers through his hair, dismantling it further. She smiled gently at the habit and laced her fingers in front of her. She began moving to the edge of the property. Of course, they would need to take a car to get to the shopping district that was close by. Her Master explain that she could pick whatever she wished, and that money didn’t seem to be a problem, but of course Layla would be conscious of it. She still did not know enough about this man, but every time she had been granted some freedom or gift it had cost her. Clothes were necessary, yes but they were not essential. This man could very well keep her locked naked in his basement. She shook her head. How stupid. It didn’t matter what he did to her. She was enjoying the fresh air for now. Instead, she took another deep inhale and moved towards the edge of the property where a car was waiting. She assumed it belong to her Master. He didn’t seem to be very vocal about telling her where to go. Instead, he seemed to be watching her intently, as if waiting for her to do something drastic. If he was so concerned with her comfort, she wished he would just tell her what he expected of her. She was afraid that at this rate, she would make some terrible mistake that would tarnish all future attempts at a pleasant relationship with this strange pink haired man.

Instead, Layla simply got into the waiting car, and after her Master had gotten in, they were driving off towards the shopping center. It wasn’t a very long drive, and once they arrived, Layla took a bold move and got out of the car. Hearing so many people, she stopped, her ears picking up on the different voices. She took a deep inhale in to make sure there were no lingering scents of foreign wolves. She didn’t know if her previous jailers would return, but she didn’t want them to. That, would be a fate worse than death. She didn’t want to return. Instead, she moved into the large center and started to look at clothing boutiques. What would her master want her to wear? He had said not to worry. To get clothing that would be comfortable for her. She frowned and started her search, looking for practical shoes that could be worn in lab or hospital settings. She picked out outfits that were formal as well as relaxed. A few prim dresses fit the bill as well, along with some cardigans. She lingered on accessories, looking at the pretty bracelets and hair pins, touching some of them but not picking up any. She dind’t really need them, but they were very pretty. She fingered her own necklace, taking in a deep breath as she peeled herself away from the case of glittering finery. A few more pairs of shoes, including one pair of heels for formal occasional, and a quick grab of undergarments and she seemed to be done. Her eyes scanned looking for her pink haired Master, and she smiled pleasantly at him. ”I’m finished Master. I think I have everything I will need. I hope it will be fitting to help you with your research.” She turned her gaze down then, keeping her pleasant smile, but awaiting further instruction.

                                                  Outfit: Current Attire

The corners of Alaric’s lips were tugged upwards at Karina’s outburst of laughter. Brilliant, the man’s eyes seemed to say as he surveyed her. Confidence, mischief, open to suggestion. She would do, more than perfectly, for what Alaric had in mind. “Clothing,” the man murmured with a confused tone. Of course, a girl like her would never get enough. “I suppose that I could help you procure some attire to fit your fancy,” he added absentmindedly. Fashion was not his area of expertise. In his bedroom, a large armoire was filled with brown suits and blue ties of different shades. Alaric has donned this same combination since… Well, the year didn’t matter. What mattered right now was that the young lady had agreed to accompany him back home. As he stood up and positioned his hat back atop his cumulus of blonde locks, Alaric’s gaze did not break from Karina. Everything about her emulated that boy’s energy, and Alaric couldn't get enough.

“Thank you for all your help, good sir,” Alaric told the guard without actually looking at him. “I can take it from here.” A gloved hand extended outwards and after a moment Alaric heard shuffling before a leash was placed in his hand. “There you go…” the guard replied. Slowly, one lanky leg in front of the other, Alaric approached Karina. Tucking his cane under his arm, he used one hand to delicately brush back a few strands of hair and the other to clip the leash to her collar. Once again, his face came within close proximity to hers. The man really had no concept of personal space. After the clip was in place, he took a step back from her and let out a deep, rumbling laugh. Throwing his hands in the air, Alaric exclaimed, “Let the adventure begin!”

His coattail made a swoosh noise as the man turned around and sauntered out of the room. He already knew where he was going, having memorized the corridors from when he arrived this morning. The leash felt unfamiliar in his free hand, and he paid no attention to whether or not he was accidentally choking Karina. Reaching the front door, he paused and held the door open for the blue-eyed girl. This action felt melodramatically heroic in a humorous way; opening the door and letting this caged being free. How infinitesimal her life has been so far—unknown and unimportant, passed around from master to master with no real objective. Alaric almost felt bad for her. If he was capable of feeling bad, that is.

When they reached the diaphanous barrier, only detectable by someone who has delved into magic, Alaric paused for a moment to explain to Karina how teleportation works. “As you can see, I have no automobile. For transportation, I walk or teleport, as you will now also do with me.” The man talked as if he were speaking to a child. But to Alaric, Karina was basically a child if they were counting years. “Now, teleportation takes less than a second, but those few milliseconds will be the worst moments of your life. Your head will feel like it is going to explode, your heart is going to pound a million times, and your stomach will drop to the floor. If you do not steady yourself, you will fall flat on your face when we land at our destination. Understand?” The image of Karina face planting in her dress and heels brought Alaric a temporary sensation of sadistic joy.

With a sudden serious face, Alaric stepped across outside the barrier. He looped the leash onto his cane, tucked it under his arm, and reached into his trouser pocket to pull out a matchbox. After a match was struck, Alaric tugged Karina towards him and the wind swirled around the two in a small tornado. A row of white teeth smiled down at the girl as her body was pressed up against his. “Here we go.” Before he even uttered the last word, the pair disappeared into thin air and reappeared in the middle of a shopping center. The match had gone out and flecks of ash dotted Alaric’s white gloves. “Tsk,” the man sighed, stuffing the match back into his pockets. Why did magic have to be so messy?

Dusting off his gloves, Alaric’s eyes travelled around the mall with disinterest. He pulled out a pocket watch from his coat pocked and scrunched his eyebrows. There was no water or earth anywhere in sight, so a cloaking spell was out of the question. How long did it usually take for them to find him? Too long, Alaric mused with a smirk. He and Karina had enough time. Even though his heart raced with the possibility of being discovered, his face was stoic, his posture perfect, and not a bead of sweat was at his brow. How troublesome it would be if the girl were to know that something actually bothered Alaric.

Putting his watch away, Alaric turned his attention to Karina. “Well, Karina, I must admit that I am out of my domain. Lead the way.”

The last thing Karina wanted to do was let him put on that damn leash of theirs. But he promised to take her shopping and he seemed to have a pretty good sense of humor, so she figured it was the lesser of two evils. Put the thing on and go with him, have him take it off soon - or fight and be stuck here until someone else ended up wanting her. That decided in her mind, she folded her arms under her breasts and couldn't help the look of disgust on her face when he clipped the leash to her collar, like she was some sort of dog. The expression wasn't aimed at the man, though, and it didn't cross her mind until he pulled away that he could have taken offense to that and changed his mind completely. Sighing, she took a step forward and paused when he did his dramatic announcement, hands in the air and everything. Blinking and not quite sure what to make of that gesture, Karina tucked some hair behind her ear, though she let most of it fall over her shoulders to try to cover the collar as much as possible. "Uh...sure. Lead the way?" she said hesitantly, not knowing if he wanted her to make any comment or not anyway. He wasn't very much taller than her, but as he began to walk with long strides, she had to take quick ones of her own to keep up or get choked with the leash. If Karina thought he'd pay attention, she would have told him off about it, but there didn't seem to be much point in trying with how the man was so far.

Karina had never been exposed to magic in her life until she had came to the place here and gave him a dubious sort of look as he explained about teleportation and how they were going to leave here. That just didn't seem possible to her, but she didn't argue with him. That was a lesson she was going to put to use - never argue with the master if they seemed crazy. It would only agitate them. Instead she just nodded briefly when he asked if she understood. Sure, she got what he was saying, even if she didn't think it was real. Although, her eyes did widen at the tornado that appeared and she didn't even push him away when he held her closer to him, she was so confused.

And then they were at a mall and while she did stumble out of sheer surprise, she didn't fall on her face or anything embarrassing like that. She had more grace than that. Tossing her hair out of her face and looking around with wide eyes, Karina didn't even pay the man the slightest bit of attention until he spoke up about not knowing what to do. Blinking, she looked over at him and nodded. This much, she could do. She could see other slaves walking around with their owners and already saw that they were still wearing their collars. Damn it, that meant he probably couldn't take hers off yet. Grinding her teeth in annoyance, she huffed and crossed her arms again, giving her new master the briefest sort of glance before shrugging. "Sure then," she said, almost agreeably. It would be nice to get new things, that was for certain, and she wasn't worried about his funds. If he had enough to buy such a troublesome slave - she had some idea of how much she'd cost him, after all - then he could afford to get her a new wardrobe. She wasn't going to wear the same thing day in and day out. Hell no.

Despite the humiliating leash attached to her, Karina walked with plenty of pride, or it might have been arrogance. It was always hard to tell with her and she managed to find a clothing store that suited her tastes in a manner of minutes. When she'd been on her own, her friends had always joked that she had a sixth sense for shopping. She headed right on in and a store clerk zoomed in on them, positive this was going to be a sale that would end in a big commission for her. Karina didn't much want help and tried to shoo the woman off, getting annoyed at her suggestions for everything under the sun, and finally just flat-out ignored her, pretending she didn't exist as she walked around and picked out items she wanted to try on. Going to the changing room, she finally realized a problem and sighed heavily, giving the man holding her leash a flat look. "You have to take this thing off so I can try the stuff on," Karina told him, giving the leash a tug.

↬ where | shopping centre.

↬ wondering | only a few know where the last little piggy really went.

Even if Alaric was a top grade a**hole, one could not deny the fact that he could sometimes be a gentleman. In his mind appeared a map, like floor plans, of the entire shopping center. He had been here once before. Before the man realized how he hated wading amongst the menagerie of shoppers looking for overpriced items that would not enhance his life all that much, but were rather the children of pure capitalism. But the sudden boost of confidence Karina got was…cute, so he let her be the leader. This wasn’t a word Alaric used often, but it was the only way to describe how she was holding her head up high despite the stares from passers-by. Oh yes, just imagine what this slave is for, Alaric said to himself as if he were talking to the crowd. Of course, the blonde had nothing indecent in store for the young lady, but he enjoyed the disgusted or feigned disinterested looks shot their way from people who were obviously not fans of the slave world. At each person, Alaric merely waved a gloved hand and smiled sweetly.

The shop Karina picked out was nothing short of interesting. Perhaps on the expensive side, but there was nothing Alaric couldn't easily pay for. After years of not spending on himself, he had accumulated quite the mass of funds. The thought donating to charity did not ever cross his mind, nor did doing something frivolous such as taking a vacation to a tropical island. It took all Alaric had in him not to burst out laughing at the pathetic salesperson when she approached. Like damn harpies. Yet another reason he hated shopping. In the public eye, the green-eyed man liked to give an appearance of being polite and respectable, so when Karina batted the woman away like the gnat she was, Alaric simply said, “I apologize sincerely for the girl’s behaviour.” He took the salesgirl's hand and gently placed a kiss on the back of it. The salesperson blushed a light pink and nodded meekly. Leash still in hand, Alaric wandered over to where Karina was now browsing clothing he had no interest in. Different colours of different fabric sewn together in different ways—it amazed him how modern consumerism was so blind to practicality.

A grin made its way onto Alaric’s face when the slack on the girl’s leash ran out. Her defeated sigh sounded like music to his ears. He didn’t look down at the leash in his hands when she pulled it. Instead, Alaric kept his eyes trained on her. A few moments passed, then a few more, the man let the silence hang in the air. Then, as if he were a machine just brought back to life after having been in sleep mode, Alaric started plucking the fingers of his glove one by one. “This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home,” he began to softly sing. “This little piggy had jam and bread, this little piggy had none.” Pausing at the final finger of his glove, he smiled at Karina and said a little louder, “And we’ll never know what happened to the last piggy.” With that, his glove was off.

In the next second, Alaric was beside Karina, once again very close to her neck. As he went to unclip the collar, he tugged a single strand of pink hair out of her head. Taking a handkerchief from his pocket, the laid the single hair in the middle and gentle folded he napkin back up. “This is just in case you decide to try anything,” Alaric told Karina with a wink. “Although I am sure that you are more wise than to try anything with me.” The way Alaric said the phrase made it sound almost like a question, but not. Oh, the spells he could cast on her if she ever crossed his mood. Making all of her teeth and hair fall out, throw up everything she ate, becoming blind? He could do that, and so much more. These spells would all be temporary, but he could convince her that they were permanent. And there were far worse things he could do, but he didn’t purchase a slave merely to have a torture puppet. If he wanted human test subjects, he would just abduct them off the street with much more ease. No, despite the airs Alaric puts on, at the end of the day he needed her safe. Well, maybe not safe. Just alive and functioning, he mentally added with a sneer.

Finally, Karina was free of her leash and Alaric found a seat facing the changing room. Reclining back in the chair, he stretched his arms and draped them on the other seats. “I shall be dutifully waiting for the young lady to make her selections,” he informed with a slight bit of mockery. To show that he would be entertained, he began to inspect each of his fingernails with a little too much interest.

Staring up at him, Karina just nodded at his threat, the gesture barely perceptible unless you were watching closely. He frightened her in a way - and confused the rest of her, not understanding what he even really wanted her for. Sex? He seemed too stiff, but then again, his sense of humor had been a surprise to her as well. He didn't seem the partying sort and definitely wasn't the charitable type. So why he wanted a slave at all she couldn't guess. As long as it wasn't for some weird torture thing, she was fine with almost anything. Just let her have some things and enjoy herself and the young woman didn't give much of a damn about the rest of the world, living in her own bubble. She'd had to, it was almost a form of self-preservation. Dealing with other people unnecessarily just opened you up to a world of hurt, cheating, crushed dreams and liars. It was much easier to sort of maneuver through it and pretend you were the star in a play, everyone else the nameless extras. It probably wasn't the healthiest way to deal with everything, but no one had said she was a well-adjusted girl. Just well-endowed.

Karina was smart enough to guess that he probably wouldn't respond well to a gesture of affection as a thank-you for taking off the leash. He might not have even done it because she'd asked him to, thinking it over, but wasn't sure. He was...twisty. Interesting, but twisty. She'd have to watch herself. So instead of a hug or kiss, she just beamed at him and blew him a teasing kiss before letting herself into the dressing room. Sure, he knew he'd unsettled her, he had to. But that didn't mean she couldn't play pretend! So the young woman busied herself trying things on, more to find out her size in the store and brands than anything else. Once she knew what sizes to look for, it'd be much easier and faster for her to pick out things she liked. The girl was a smart one, adapted to her situations easily - if he seemed the lazy sort, she might have taken longer, dragged it out and relaxed. Something about him seemed like he didn't want to be there - not displeased, not quite, and not antsy like a man who'd been dragged by his girlfriend to buy a pair of pants. Just...well, she didn't know where the line was to toe yet, so better to be safe than sorry. "I'm assuming you have a computer? I can always order things online if you aren't the shopping sort. Doesn't bother me, I can browse more things and get a better selection anyway," Karina called as she put back on her clothing, running a finger around the collar. Hopefully once they were at his place he'd take it off. She wasn't wondering how they'd get there, not anymore after the little teleportation stunt.

What didn't fit her, or that she didn't like, she left in the dressing room. From what she carried, it was clear that she preferred bright colors, loud things - things with flair, nothing subdued or 'boring' to her. She gave him a blank look for a moment before shrugging, weighing her options. "I'll pick out some stuff I need and the rest I'll just order. You don't even have a phone to fiddle with," she added with a grin. Oh, she knew better than to run off. As she moved back through the racks to pick out the rest of what she liked - and needed, since all she had was literally what she wore - Karina made sure to stay away from the store entrance in case he thought she was trying to run and preemptively punished her. There was something about his tone that told her she didn't want to find out how he would punish her. Whether he was the 'punish before they do' type, she didn't have much interest in finding that out either. She wasn't into stuff like that and didn't care if he was.

"I'm done, if you have a toothbrush and stuff that I can use at your place," Karina told him after a bit, flicking some hair over her shoulder. "Otherwise I need that, the toiletries." She shrugged, not seeming much to care. One one hand, she did, taking a lot of pride in her appearance. On the other, she didn't want to test his patience. She'd just order what she needed online and be happy with that. It wasn't much fun wandering around looking at hairbrushes anyway, at least not for her. So she looked at him expectantly, her things on the counter waiting to be approved and rung up so they could go.

↬ wondering | if the contents of this journal are as promised.

The flirtatious energy coming off the girl was both thrilling and amusing. It was good that she was in the mindset to fool around with him, but he could tell by her posture that she was still tense. What a beautiful scene, Alaric wanted to shout to the heavens. Keeping her guessing made sure that she would remain curious and cautious. The green-eyed man was almost proud with himself for getting Karina into the position he wanted so early on into this little game. After one or two days, she would be ready to hear what Alaric had been dying to tell her from the minute he laid eyes on hers. And if she didn’t listen, she was technically trapped with him and he would persist until she did. The man wasn’t hopeful or optimistic; those were traits he threw out the window long ago. He was simply intrigued by the possibility that he was right about her, and what she could do if he was right. So, the warlock would keep playing nice until the moment came when he didn’t need to. Alaric would also have to unwillingly admit that Karina hadn’t given him a reason to not enjoy her presence. She was simple in a relaxing sense, but still had enough issues to be fascinating.

“No, shopping is not my preferred pastime but whatever the young lady requires shall be given to her.” Alaric cringed at his own remark, how sincere and goody-goody it sounded. There was mainly truth in his statement; he knew how it felt to be treated like trash, to be down in the lowest parts… Well, he wouldn’t go there. What’s done is done, as he always told himself. But the pressing concern of technology began creeping up on him. Alaric had never required a phone or a computer before. Why would he need to? Who did he have to call or catch up with? The answer is nobody. All his messages were delivered in the most discrete ways and those he sought services from always had their memories altered. The man didn’t even have a bank account, Alaric only made transactions through cash and all his money was stored away in miscellaneous places. A life hiding was not easy, but Alaric had managed to make it work. Whether or not this would disappoint Karina, he didn’t really care. Staying off the radar and protecting himself was more important than whatever silly entertainment a computer or phone would offer.

“You would have trouble ordering items online from a computer that doesn’t exist,” Alaric snickered as he made his way to the checkout counter. As he did, he shot a look over to the salesperson that first greeted him and Karina. She started a moment then scurried over to the cash register and began scanning tags, not making eye contact with him. Lifting the leash in his hands, Alaric clipped it back to Karina’s collar with a satisfying click. The girl behind the counter looked up for a moment before her eyes darted away and began folding clothes. “I-is that all?” she stammered. The man’s blonde hair swayed as he gave a curt nod. He pulled out his wallet and slapped several bills on the counter with a yawn. After she rang the purchased through, Alaric looked to Karina and assessed what their next course of action should be. “I did pick up some miscellaneous soaps and other liquids with girly packaging before I collected you. I suppose that you will have to inspect them for yourself once we are back at my lodgings. So, if that is all, we should be going. We can come back any time you feel it is necessary. Maybe if I am not in the mood, I can fetch you another shopping companion. Nonetheless, it is a problem for another day.” Addressing the salesperson, he cooed, “Thank you for your services. It was a pleasure doing business with you.”

A cane stretched across the counter and inserted itself into the loops of the bags. With a c**k of the wrist, the bags slid downwards and settled neatly on Alaric’s forearm. He winked at the girl before gripping the leash in his hands and giving Karina a slight tug to signal their departure. “Thank you,” the salesgirl called after the two with a slight bit of confusion. After they were outside the store, Alaric looked at an invisible watch on his hand and exclaimed, “Would you look at the time! I almost forgot I had another previous arrangement booked for today. Come along, before we are late.” Without waiting for a response from the pink-haired girl, Alaric began making his way out of the mall, weaving through families and dodging teenagers. They arrived at a corner of the shopping center that was mildly deserted compared to the rest of the establishment. “Ah, the post office,” Alaric whispered to no one in particular. It was a small joint, so miniscule that the owner had to turn half of it into a convenience store. But Alaric enjoyed these sorts of places hidden on the down low.

He unclipped the leash from Karina’s collar and placed a hand on the small of her back to guide her inside. “This may take a few moments, so you can feel free to wander around the convenience store.” Alaric began taking off but then swivelled around and added with a wink, “Do not come looking for me.” The woman behind the counter of the postal section was about to serve Alaric before another man appeared from behind shelves of papers. “Ah, Mr. Robertson, I was starting to think that you'd gotten lost. I will take it from here Linda,” the bearded man said with an Italian accent. Taking a glance behind Alaric, he added, “I see you have brought a lady friend with you!” Smiling, Alaric followed the Italian into the back room. “What did I say to you, Al? Are you glad I built you that room now?” Despite the annoyance Alaric felt at his teasing, the blonde couldn’t be angry with his oldest friend. “Really, Enzo? The ‘I told you so’ speech? Are you not a bit too old for this? About, two hundred years too old?” Clutching his heart in a dramatic fashion, Enzo replied, “You strike me where it hurts, amico mio.” The shorter man rummaged through some cabinets before pulling out a hefty leather-bound book. He brushed some dust off and brought it over to Alaric. “Here it is. The source says it belonged to her.” Alaric studied the detailing on the cover and scrunched up his face. That b*****d. He never even wrote me all these years. The blonde’s white gloves became gray as he held the journal in his hands. “Thank you, Enzo.” The Italian nodded and the two came back out into the store.

Alaric tucked the journal inside his magic coat pocket, making sure that Karina didn’t see it. The man also made a mental note to make sure Karina did not find out about this magical pocket, or any of its hidden contents. He dusted his gloves off before locating her. “Find anything that strikes your fancy? Or should we be heading off to home sweet home?”

At hearing he didn't have a computer, a look of dismay crossed her face that was not even smoothed out at hearing she could go shopping whenever she wished. Oh no. Karina loved computers, playing on them, using them to talk to other people - even make her own money when she had the chance to. He didn't seem the sort to change his mind about it and she closed her mouth, having opened it to object. Maybe, maybe, if she was good, he'd get her a laptop or something like that. He didn't have to use it. But she wanted one, not having technology made her feel bereft. She had grown up with it, like everyone in her generation, and the loss of it made her mood grow a bit sour, akin to a spoiled child being told they couldn't have one more toy. Biting her lip, Karina listened to him explain that he'd bought things with 'girly packaging'. At least that sounded promising. She didn't like hearing he'd buy her a 'shopping companion', however - unless he meant some sort of pet, she didn't want anyone else there. It would be competition and while she thrived on competition, it was not the healthy sort at all. It was instinct to pull away from the leash he clipped back onto her collar, like she was the pet, but she didn't move much other than that small reflex away from it. Sighing, Karina followed him and was a little surprised she wasn't carrying her bags.

He seemed that sort of man, after all.

The store they went to next looked like a hole-in-the-wall sort of place, but at least it was clean. Wrinkling her nose, she ignored him when he told her not to go looking for him. As if she would be that stupid to try to bother him. Snorting derisively, Karina instead let herself wander the store as he suggested, her stomach growling a little at the sight of food. She hadn't eaten in a while and wondered if he would let her grab something to eat before they left this place and went - she had no idea. His home? Somewhere else where she hopefully wouldn't have to wear the stupid collar and leash, unless he was one of those men who saw it as some sort of status symbol. "He looks the sort," was the sour thought as she picked up some packaged pastries, not really interested in eating healthy. Oh, Karina did when the mood struck her, but she'd been blessed with the ability to eat whatever she wanted and not have it go straight to her figure, so she took advantage of it whenever she could. Why not?

Whomever he was talking to was just as quiet, or maybe they'd gone somewhere she couldn't hear them. Karina didn't care much to know about her new master's personal life, there really was no point to it. Unless he decided to involve her in something, she already knew her boundaries were her 'service' was required - be a good pet and do as she was told. Simple enough. Nowhere in the unwritten rules did it say anything about being nosy. Sure, she was, and if she had the chance she'd pry into whatever she could - but the man was dangerous enough for her instincts to suggest she not do that, at least for now. Picking up something to drink, some iced tea in a bottle, she took the things to the counter and had to wait for Alaric to come back, unable to pay on her own. The person behind the register didn't look the least bit surprised to see her having to wait, or to see the collar. Even if this place was hiding, it was clear that they had seen plenty of slaves working there, enough not to care about them. Just like everyone else. Shifting from foot to foot, Karina was about to glance up at the clock to see how much time had passed when her master reappeared, looking almost satisfied with something.

"I got some snacks, it's been a while since we had breakfast and I'm hungry," Karina said with a shrug. "Not much, just something to hold me over until actual meals. Unless you don't have those, either?" she added suspiciously, peering up at the man with narrowed eyes. If he said he didn't, she was going to have to run and grab what she could - there was no way she would be stuck without even having anything to eat.
