R'yn had been working on a project during his free time in secret. It had been a difficult task. He had avoided spending time with the crechelings--and T'rel to finish. T'rel had been the more difficult of the two to avoid; his fellow bronzerider could be a pest when he felt there was something to find out. R'yn would have told him, really; if he felt T'rel could be trusted with a surprise. It wasn't that he considered his friend unreliable; but T'rel had a tendency to let things slip. He had a feeling Ticene would have gone to T'rel first.

Gereth, have Tic meet us outside our weyr? He requested of his dragon. He had a cloth covered box in his arms. He hoped Ticene would like it; and in the future that Tiry would. Tell Calith that it won't take long. I won't be keeping the Weyrwoman from sands full of eggs long, He smirked at his bronze's grumble. Well, go on, he said. Maybe she'll let you see the eggs.

Calith, mine requires yours' presence outside our weyr. He says it is important that she come. Shall I come help you guard eggs?

Surprising though it may have been, Ticene was not actually on the sands with her dragon minding the eggs. No, she had her own young one to attend to. Ticene was actually sat cross legged on the floor of their weyr, toys scattered all around her and Tiry in her lap. The infant was wide awake and eagerly reaching for a number of items on the floor. Unable to sit unsupported or move anywhere on her own it was instead her method of attaining things that she would reach out and make some sort of sound, leaning forward toward the object. Tic would then pick up that toy and place it within Tiry's reach. From then on in it was handled for a while before she lost interest and something else caught her attention and she wanted that instead.

Gereth's has need of you, love, he says to meet him outside our weyr. Tic sent her thanks and a wealth of love to the dragon carefully guarding her eggs on the sands. Leaning forward she looked at Tiry upside down grinning as the child giggled at her sudden appearance. "Shall we go see what that silly Daddy of yours is up to, now?" Tic's hair fell around her daughter and instantly her attention shifted. The young girl reached out to caught a hold of the warm russet waves that surround her, starkly different from the shock of black hair on her own head. Chuckling softly to herself, Ticene scooped up her daughter and began to carry her outside.

"Tiry, who's that?" Ticene said once she had drawn close enough for R'yn for her to recognise him. Tirynne's immediate reaction was to break into a bright grin, letting out a happy squeal of laughter as she stretched her arms out to her father. Tic could never stop herself from smiling when Tiry grinned and she was so full of them now. Things seemed strange when she couldn't hear the small child's bubbling laughter and squealing giggles. "What's in the box?" She asked with light-hearted suspicion, walking to her weyrmate's side and giving him a brief kiss as greeting. The woman had suspected that R'yn had been up to something for a while now, noticing his absence without the usual reasons being used. She had a feeling she was about to find out what it was.

Meanwhile Calith had been pondering over whether to allow Gereth to join her. The bronze had been what she considered to be inexcusably absent with this clutch and she was not happy with him. True, his absence didn't actually hinder her, but it was the principal that was the important thing! As her mate she expected him to be attentive and present whether she needed him or not. Most likely this was all coming about as Calith had begun to compare Gereth's conduct to R'yn's and how he helped Hers care for Tiny-Hers. It was tempting to refuse simply to punish the bronze, but Calith was aware of the flaws in that plan. If she were to push Gereth away it would be entirely possible that the male may start seeking other company. What if he flew another gold?! The dragon's eyes burned an angry red for a moment and a low growlish-snarl vibrated through the sands.

You may join me, Calith managed to say pleasantly, all the while considering what she might do to those golds if said situation came across. Never mind the trials that Gereth would endure afterwards.

R'yn was surprised by Ticene's quick appearance, and even more so when he noticed she had Tiry with him. A surprise that quickly became a pleasant one when his daughter recognized him. He put the box down and scooped the infant into his arms. "Tiry!" he said delightedly, lifting her above his head. He pulled her close to his chest, then, supporting her head with one hand, and back with the other.

"A present," he said, beaming at Ticene. He scooted the box towards her with a foot. "You can uncover it," he said. "It's not finished, really... But I thought you could see it now. You might like it." Months ago, the bronzerider had declared he would get Tirynne a runner. He felt he had at least achieved that; making her a wooden one. It had taken sevendays, but he was confident with the result.

He lowered his voice, leaning toward Tic as if he worried whether Tiry would hear, "It's a runner," he said. "Er. A rocking one. A toy. T'rel said they were common in the Hold or something. I don't know... I think I got it right."

Tiry let out a delighted laugh at being lifted up, giggling and waving her hands around. When she was lowered again the infant made numerous happy sounds as R'yn held her. There was no pattern or method, just a long string of gurgles and sounds she apparently found interesting to mimic.

Looking down at the box, Tic had to wonder what kind of present R'yn had decided to get. It was nowhere near any of the tradition time that presents were given. Although she had a feeling that if she were to question R'yn on that then he simply would give her something about how he doesn't need a reason or a particular day to give a present.

Once she was allowed to uncover it, Tic leaned down to pull off the covering, looking back up at R'yn with a frown. This was all very secretive. What was he up to? Carefully Tic removed the cover and was unable to stop the gasp of surprise that instantly rose up at the sight of the toy. The woman's hands went to her mouth as she tried to think of something to say. "R'yn, where did you get this? How did you get this?" Straightening up Ticene would have hugged R'yn were he not already holding Tiry. "We heard about the lordlings having things like these, but nobody ever actually saw one." A significant amount of awe coloured her tone as she looked back down at the runner. Nearly bouncing there was a bright grin on Ticene's face. "Oh, R'yn, this is wonderful. You know she's too young for it right now though, right? It doesn't matter, she'll grow into it."

"How'd I get it?" R'yn echoed, surprised at the question. "Well. Er. You see. I made it. I had help," he admitted awkwardly. "I'm only good for small things. Little wooden carvings--I was never apprenticed. And it's not finished," he added, gesturing to it. "Needs sanded and painted before she can use it. I don't want her getting a splinter." He hesitated, frowning slightly. He hadn't known these toys were for the upper class. T'rel had said they were common toys in holds and halls.

"I didn't know that," he said. "I just thought since..." he handed Tiry to Ticene and gave her an awkward smile. He hadn't meant to remind his weyrmate of her humble beginnings. He had wondered, when T'rel had told him they were common; the creche had had one, but it had been so beaten up that by the time R'yn had been old enough to recognize what it was, the runner's head had gone missing.

"I'm glad you like it," he said with a smile. "I'm hoping Tiry grows into it soon. Maybe you could help her with it in a few months?"

"You made it?" Ticene echoed, she had seen the little woodcarvings that R'yn had made before and she'd always found them sweet, but this was something different. It didn't matter that he had needed help, or that it wasn't finished. What mattered was that R'yn had gone through all this effort and dedicated all of that time to make something that Tic had absolutely no doubt that Tiry would enjoy playing with once she was old enough.

Taking Tiry from him, she couldn't help but grin at his effort. Tic had no real negativity associated with where she came from. Of course there were people better off than her, but she was willing to bet there were people who had had a lot worse than her too. She had always had what she needed, at least she remembered it that way. L'fir had never complained, but then that man never complained about anything.

With her daughter securely held with one arm, Tic looped her free arm around R'yn's shoulders and kissed him. "I love it and I know she will too." Resting her forehead against his, the woman smiled at her weyrmate. "We'll both help her."

"Yeah," R'yn seemed vaguely embarrassed by this fact. He was sure he had shaped the runner's head wrong, even with the help of a Master woodcrafter. "It was hard keeping it secret," he confessed. "T'rel kept hassling me about where I was going during my free time. And I made Ionan cry once." He glanced at his feet guiltily, shaking his head. "I thought if I'd told them, you would be bound to hear. Ionan can't keep something from you, and T'rel can't keep a secret to save his life."

He returned her kiss, flashing her a bright smile afterward and poking at Tiry's nose playfully. "You do?" he asked. He placed a kiss on Tic's cheek. "Really?" He glanced at Tiry and ran his hand over her head. "See? I did get you a runner," he said. "But this one's only a promise to a future present. Maybe not a runner," he added, glancing at Ticene. "But something as good."

He wasn't sure what that something was. He'd find something, eventually, he was sure of it. Something great.
