Setting:
Nothing can erase the pain of being betrayed by your own leaders, and Hua An's retribution might have been swift in any other situation, but... When Kiran finds himself taken captive by the Legion General, what secrets are exposed?

NPC:
General Hua An
Byakko of the West, Hua An is the most flirtatious of the generals and probably the most sociable next to Roa. She's calm and elegant, appearing often as a very beautiful and helpless woman. She's often spotted playing some sort of instrument, or dancing, but just like the rest, she can become serious with a snap of a finger or a command. Though, it rarely ever comes time for her to fight seeing as the others tend to jump the gun to protect her like a little sister.

Nestled in the heart of her camp, Hua An did not paint the picture of a General in the heart of a seemingly never-ending war: her hair unbound carelessly, Hua An plucked slowly at the strings of a shamisen, smiling to herself. A cold wind was blowing in from the North, and the Byakko didn't much care for the chill, but she needed fresh air.

And, most importantly, she was waiting to greet someone. Someone who had, apparently, been threatening her life of late. The General took it slightly less seriously than her comrades might, and so she was handing this personally. Especially since it was someone amongst his own side that had handed him over.

Hua An was always curious to speak with anyone who'd been betrayed; that sting couldn't be easily erased. Besides, she would have him killed if he was remotely a threat.

The camp was a neatly arranged series of canvas tents, tied to the ground, supported by collapsible wooden frames. They were arranged in three rows on either side of one central walkway; about fifteen tents in all, most of their flaps shut to ward off the weather. It was not yet snowing, but Hua feared it might start soon.

She did not want to be out in the snow. Naturally, she had not gone to fetch the assassin herself. A select few of her men and women had seen to that; one of her captains, leading some of their favoured fighters. The tree Hua An sat beneath had lanterns strung up in the lower, heavy branches to cast both light and some modicum of heat over the woman playing her Shamisen. She didn't look like much of a General.

Everything with Hua An was precise, calculated and sincere. And this was how she wanted Kiran to first see her. Hopefully it would not take much longer for his escort to arrive.

He ached all over, muscles feeling sore and head throbbing as he was dragged through the Legionnaire camp. His head was bowed, and he struggled to concentrate on simply moving his feet to take each step to avoid stumbling and falling and possibly receiving another blow for not being able to keep on his feet. His thigh screamed out every time weight was put on that leg, the blood from the gaping wound drenching his pants as the dark, warm liquid washed down his leg. It was painful, and he kept having to stifle a shout in agony at every movement his body made. He wouldn't allow himself to give the Legionnaires dragging him the satisfaction of hearing their captive cry out pathetically. He kept his mouth clamped shut, his teeth grinding tightly together as he forced back every urge to scream that tried to force its way up his throat and out his mouth.

A tree loomed before him, lit by several lanterns all strung up on the low branches. When he lifted his head to gaze upon it, Kiran felt confusion cutting through the pain in his head. He expected these grunts to drag him into some big fancy tent with the imposing General seated on something like throne with a cold, hard glare at the supposed assassin brought before him. He expected there to be numerous guards surrounding the General, all at the ready to slay the assassin within seconds. So when he spied the woman sitting under the tree plucking at the strings of a Shamisen, Kiran only felt surprise and confusion. What kind of place was this to meet with someone that was accused of trying to assassinate the General?

When they moved closer, dread settled into Kiran as he slowly came to recognize just who he was being brought before. They only met once, and that time ended up having him at the mercy of the woman's blade. Even if he wasn't already bleeding out from injuries, Kiran doubted he would stand a chance of escape against her speed. He prided himself on his speed, but even Kiran wasn't fool enough to believe he could beat the General. The situation seemed ugly before, but now it felt all the worse. He didn't know what to expect from the woman in this little reunion.

The Legionnaire guards dragging him came to a halt several feet away from General Hua An, keeping the assassin at a distance from her. Kiran's face scrunched up, and a grunt managed to escape him when they forced him onto his knees before her. His shoulder flared in agony when the hand squeezed around the injury as he was held down in some attempt to hold him back from running at their General, even though Kiran showed no sign of doing any such thing.

"We've brought the assassin," announced one of the Legionnaire guards.

"I am pleased," she replied, not bothering to rise to greet the prisoner, but smiling at him. She set her shamisen in the hands of a willing Fighter, and had a second fighter bring her warm water, bandages, a poultice. She waved one hand slowly and without much effort to beckon those who escorted the supposed assassin to her side.

"Doesn't it hurt?" she asked, in her soft voice, as the guards released him and were dismissed to the edges of the tree's perimeter, wherever the branches began to reach thin fingers into the camp. She looked at the young man through thick lashes, a frown decorating her full lips. "Let me help you," she said, gesturing for him to rest his leg, so that she could tend to the wound.

Her expression was soft, tender even, but her voice had a steel edge to it that suggested if he tried anything other than what she was so politely asking, he would regret it. "In exchange for something, perhaps," she said. She looked up at him, pausing in her task, and added, "I am just kidding, of course." She smiled beatifically.

"Do you know how you came to my attention?" she asked, as though it was the most innocent small-talk imaginable.

Kiran narrowed his eyes, watching every movement of General with keen eyes. He was a great disadvantage in this situation, and the likelihood that he escape it alive looked grim. When the guards were dismissed, he turned his head to watch them fade to the edges of the tree's reach, though still kept the General within his sights. He squinted into the darkness beyond the light provided by the lanterns, but he saw no movement of anyone lurking through the shadows to get closer. Captain Yuan had clearly abandoned him to his fate of being captured by the Legionnaire. A part of him still wanted to believe that the man had some goodness in him, but it was quickly snuffed out like the tiny flame of a candle. Bitter rage filled him, and he bit down on the gag in his mouth, wanting to find the man and repay him for that betrayal.

His attention snapped back to General Hua An as she spoke again. Help him? He snorted at the very idea that she wanted to help him in any way. But he shifted his posture so that his injured leg lay out on the ground, if for no other reason than his own comfort. The pain didn't magically evaporate, but the kneeling was only making the injury hurt more.

He glared at her with an icy hint to his eyes. Even though she said she was kidding, he didn't trust her. She held him hostage the last time they met, and he expected her to whip out a blade at any moment and hold the sharp edge pressed against his throat until it sliced into his flesh. He was surprised that she hadn't already ordered his execution the very second he was presented before her and accused of being an assassin.

He shook his head at the question as dread settled in his chest. He already knew that Captain Yuan betrayed him, betrayed the Nobles, but he couldn't help imagining that whatever General Hua An had to say next would make everything seem even worse.

Hua An was generally regarded as one of the more frivolous of the generals. Perhaps it was behaviour like this that contributed to such rumours and hearsay. She was, admittedly, a little sore at the fact he'd yet to answer her. She tried to play it off like it hardly bothered her in the least, but the glint of her eyes and the way that affected her expression made it clear that she had no intention of tolerating his presence if he couldn't even play along. "You never answered me, when I asked you if it hurt. What shall I call you?" she asked, him, and paused, before adding: "If you ever want to be set free, like a bird from its cage, you may as well tell me."

She dabbed into the dish, and began to clean his wound, pausing briefly as she began. "As much as this must pain you, you know what would happen if we did not treat this wound? How the damage would grow, and spread. How it would take your body?" She squeezed the bloody water out of the cloth, wringing it with one hand, over the cold ground. She laughed, suddenly, and smiled, easing her grip on it and refreshing its water.

"How grim! Of course you know," she said. "Which is why I am tending to your wound, of course. To help you. Wounds left unclean to heal over do not leave neat scars. The infection grows, and it would change you until who you had once been died. I am speaking, of course, only of this," she gestured to his wound as she cleaned it.

Having cleaned the wound, she summoned yet another fighter, who handed her a cloth to dry her hands. She handed it back, and began to apply the poultice to his leg. She was not talking about his leg, though she pretended to be. "Your Captain gave you to me. You could almost say you are a present. Who does not love presents? Especially as lovely as you, little bird," she said, smiling at the Noble again.

"I would never leave you to die. I am not so careless, and hardly so cruel," she said, looking all for the world like she was truly sorry for him, like it was a grevious thing that his Captain had done. "But I suppose you would not consider changing your alliance, even for me, would you?" she asked, looking up at him through her lashes, her expression gentle.

What had happened to him, she knew, would bury inside him like a needle, and leave its poison no matter what. She just had to make sure of it.

Glaring darkly at her, Kiran considered simply sitting there silently and letting her continue talking as she pleased. He gritted his teeth. But he also knew how quick she could be, and being a General, he didn't doubt her skill with a weapon. She could probably carve him up before he even had the chance to blink if he didn't comply to her demands. "Of course it hurts," he growled with some bite to his voice. It would be a while before he could run at his usual speed again after being stabbed in the thigh. He glanced away from her, his gaze surveying the area and noting the number of fighters nearby. "What does my name matter?" He was only another faceless fighter for the Nobles to her, after all.

He winced, hissing as she touched the cloth to his wound. Of course, she was right about the necessity in cleaning his injuries. If left alone, he would suffer from infection which could lead to disease and eventual death. It wasn't a fate that he exactly looked forward to, but it bothered him, having the General from the Legion tend to his wounds. He had friends among the Legion, and if it were any of them cleaning his injury, this situation wouldn't seem nearly as strange. He, however, didn't understand why this General even cared what happened to him. Why wouldn't she simply leave his injuries alone so that he might suffer blood loss or infection? Her sudden laugh only increased the unsettling feeling inside him.

"But why?" Kiran asked tightly, his jaw hurting from being clenched for so long. "Why should you care about my injuries?"

He knew his Captain had betrayed him. Abandoned him to the hands of the Legion after feeding him false information about the purpose of their mission. Hearing it said out loud by his enemy only made the knife feel like it was being twisted ever deeper into his back. Why, after all that time of training with him, did Captain Yuan betray him like this? He resisted that sudden urge to lunge at the General and seek some sort of outlet to the rage building inside him, coiling into a tight ball in his chest. That course of action was suicidal, and despite the anger and hurt trying to blind him, he was very much aware of what going against the General meant.

His head was slightly bowed when he lifted his gaze, turning cold eyes back onto her. "I fight only for the Noble." His voice was firm, controlled, but deep inside him, the betrayal struck at a nerve that made him question the trust he could place in other Nobles.

Of course, he was right to think she was faster than she seemed, though of all her allies she was probably also the most happy to undertake frivolous pursuits-- in other words, she was a woman who liked to celebrate as much as she liked to fight for her cause. Equal energy into equal endeavours; what was a warrior who couldn't love, who didn't feel passion? Someone who could never be true to their cause, because they could never understand exactly what it took to pursue it.

That was what Hua An likely, in secret, believed. "Every name of every fighter and every Captain and every Student matters," she said, "if you forget who you are fighting, how long will it be before you forget what you are fighting for?" she asked, with a sweet smile. These were their friends, siblings and family; they were all important. Of course, she could hardly remember everyone's names, and it was a little bit for show, but she certainly did want to use them wherever possible.

Apart from that, the General was tending his wounds because she was curious as to why a Captain would throw him at the mercy of his enemy. What was so special about this one Fighter? She could see potential in him, strength and fight. Standing up to her, after all, was no easy feat. She did not take that for granted. It was a shame he wouldn't see things her way, though. "Because you could just as easily be me, couldn't you?" she said, reaching one hand out as though she would cup his face gently. She never touched him, paused just before her skin would making contact with his, tilted her head. Her dark hair, clipped back but falling loose around her shoulders, slid as she moved like water might pour over rocks. "And naturally, I am curious as to why your superiors would go to the trouble to sacrifice you. Perhaps they are afraid you will surpass them, little bird?" she suggested, sitting back after her work was done.

She called to someone, by name, and they brought food and some tea. The tea was served in a glass pot, and it blossomed before them as it brewed. Hua An poured herself a cup, and offered some to the fighter. His eyes were cold, it was true. It didn't seem to bother her. "So, what can I call you?"

She served a little rice in two bowls, and rested hers in her lap, cupping it in both hands. "You fight for the Nobles, I fight for our dear Emperor. Today, I will tell you my secret," she said.

After a long, meaningful wait that involved careful, controlled sips of tea, Hua An said: "I wish we could be friends, but we must protect what we hold in our hearts. All that I do is protect what I love. All that you do will be the same, I am sure. My secret is folded into this revelation, dear Fighter. I am sorry we cannot see eye to eye."

Perhaps Hua An was just entertaining herself. Perhaps she meant what she said. Regardless of its truth, or her motivation behind the behaviour, it seemed still as though she was a cat playing with its caught mouse. It was surely of little comfort she had no intention of eating it.

He watched her carefully as she tended to his injuries. He listened to her speak but remained skeptical of every words to fall from her lips. She fought for the Legion, she was General, and Kiran didn't doubt she had a way for spinning words and manipulating situations to go her way. If he wasn't careful, he would be caught within her web, and he wasn't sure what would happen to him then. Killed, perhaps. He was surprised he wasn't dead already when the Legionnaires who captured him thought he was an assassin. They could have killed him right then and be done with the whole thing instead of dragging him before their General.

He managed a laugh, short and sharp. He met her gaze without wavering, though deep inside under his cocky exterior he was shaking like a leaf. This was a woman how could kill him before he could even blink if he slipped up. "I doubt you would ever be caught in this position," Kiran said, and he tracked the movement of her hand with his eyes. His heart practically leaped into his throat as her hand came close to touching his cheek. What game was she playing here? "You're much too skilled to be caught." Which only proved to show that he was still quite inexperienced compared to the higher ranked fighters.

He could hear the warning in his head again and wondered why he hadn't listened to it. If he hadn't joined his Captain on this mission, he never would be in this situation where his life was practically forfeit. He couldn't escape from this camp without being killed. There were too many Legionnaire fighters and a highly skilled General to cut him down if he tried. "I suppose your guess is just as good as mine." But it seemed fairly obvious to him, now, that his Captain had worked with the Legionnaire from the beginning. Kiran had let his awe of the man blind him, and now he paid the price for it.

He stared at the tea offered to him. Poisoned? But Hua An was drinking it too, and poison seemed unnecessary when they could just as easily cut of his head. The General had no reason to trick him into drinking poison. He sipped at it, and the whole strangeness hit him. He was sitting there with an enemy General as they drank tea. This wasn't exactly how he would have imagined things when he considered the possibility of being captured. He imagined being tied up, beaten, and tortured.

He frowned at her, still hesitant to give his name. But if she was going to kill him, what would it matter if she knew his name or not? He turned his gaze away and said with great reluctance, "Kiran. My name is Kiran." He doubted the name would stick with her for long after she killed him.

His gaze slid back to her when Hua An mentioned a secret. Despite being on opposite sides of the war, Kiran had people who fought for the Legionnaire who were his friends or people he respected. He even respected Hua An's speed and skill. He leaned forward as if he were about to share a secret of his own with her. "Am I supposed to be swayed to betray the Noble for you?"

The damage Hua An sought to do was not the easy kind: broken bones, torn skin, cleaved flesh. No, Hua An's words were splinters and she aimed them at the heart. They might not take, it was true. But all she needed was for a single one of her words to strike him at the wrong time, fill him with doubt. The higher up he climbed, the more she figured he would remember this, remember her words. Remember the cost of this war.

And she would carve into him long after this meeting.

It might not take hold, of course. It might never cause him to waver. Might never force him to choose the wrong decision. She smiled at his compliment, batting her lashes at him, teasing. "Flatterer," she accused, punctuated by a wink.

"Would you have made it this far if you could be swayed to my cause from one meeting?" she asked, with a sweet smile. It was a shame he wouldn't play her game. "Come," she said, beckoning the injured Fighter to rise, "we will walk through my camp, the training drill is about to begin."

She wanted him to live. She wanted him to betray the Noble who had betrayed him, wanted there to be confusion and suspicion and accusations. She needed all of these things. Hua An had a beautiful smile, but she was in this position for a reason. It was not just her speed and her skill alone. "On second thought, with your leg in such a state, perhaps we should just sit here and watch them march by? I do love to watch them march," Hua An said, turning to face the limited space between the tents. Row upon row of her Fighters marched, led by their Captains.

In fact, far fewer than it seemed. They were doubling around tents and changing clothing, masking their faces with scarves, helmets, or going barefaced in order to make the deception complete. Not that it was so difficult: it was far enough away that individual features were indistinct. It was an illusion. A clever one, though: the sound of marching and shifting armour rang out for some time. Finally, the stream of Legionnaires stopped. Hua An turned to Kiran. "Kiran... such a nice name. I think you will climb high in the ranks, Kiran. When you get to the very top, remember my secret," she said, with a happy smile.

"For now, I think we will send you home. I have other matters to attend to."

She was playing a game with him. Even he could tell that much was obvious. He just wasn't sure what game exactly she was playing with him. Hua An wasn't merely difficult to read. She was down right impossible! Kiran shifted awkwardly in his uncertainty, hiding a minor wince as the movement made his leg throb. He tried to play himself off as cocky and confident, though he suspected the General could probably see right through any mask he wore.

"I was merely speaking truthfully," he told her, allowing one of his charming smiles to grace his face. "A beautiful and dangerous woman such as yourself? It's no wonder you were made a General."

Kiran finished the tea and set the cup aside. Then he leaned back on his arms, going for a casual, relaxed appearance. He was sitting in the enemy's camp and trying to look like he did this everyday. But this wasn't anything like how he imagined his night going. It was supposed to be a simple get in, gather information, and get out mission. His fingers dug into the soft earth, and his jaw tightened. It would have been a simple mission if his Captain hadn't betrayed him, leaving him at the mercy of the Legionnaire.

"My sister likes to point out that I'm as stubborn as our parents. My mind won't be changed so easily." He nearly laughed out loud when she suggested going for a walk, his eyes darting to his injured leg. He wouldn't be able to walk very well on that leg for a while, assuming he left this camp alive, which he had no reason to believe he would. Turning his head, he followed Hua An's gaze to watch the Legionnaires passing between the open space between the rows of tents. To what point did she want him to see this? Did she think seeing the Legionnaire march would somehow change his mind about which side he fought for? He glanced out the corner of his eye at her, but he still couldn't figure out what was going on in her mind.

Kiran frowned briefly then the corner his mouth twitched. He bowed his head with a little shake. "I'll climb high, will I?" A light chuckle bubbled out of him before he turned to stare at the General. "I don't know that I'll climb that high if I get caught so easily. And-" The rest of what he was going to say stuck in his throat. His eyes widened a touch, staring in surprise, and for a moment, he was too shocked to even respond.

"You're - What?" Surely he had heard her wrong. "You're letting me go? Just like that?" It felt like a trap somehow. He could imagine them sending him off, and once he took two steps outside the camp, the Legionnaire would ambush him. How could they just let him go? "What matters do you have to attend?" His brow furrowed as his mouth pressed into a thin line.

A little show of force was fun. Hua An smiled as she watched the Fighters. After all, he'd been led right into her camp, and she had no desire to kill a solitary Fighter. She had been curious, bored. She couldn't let him return with accurate information, anyway. They were about to move camp, so location would be fine, and this little show would at least be enough to disorient if not convince.

"Do you think so?" she asked, laughing, looking for a moment like any woman might at receiving such a compliment. Perhaps there was a reason the other Generals always rushed to protect her. Maybe she was just keeping most of her hand up her sleeve.

Hua An thought it was nice, that he'd mention his sister. It made Hua An think, again, of the price they were paying. She had already come to terms with the price long ago: it had to be paid. Even if it was her friends, her loved ones, her siblings at stake-- this had to be done. Nothing, not even seeing her enemy as an individual could deter her now. "Kiran, little bird... you are still young, you can still change your course... As stubborn as you are. Do not forget that, alright?" She said, suddenly, resting her tilted head in the palm of one hand and smiling at him.

She motioned to her nearby Fighters with one slender, elegant hand. They brought her a heavy cloth, and rope. "I'm afraid my matters are only for Legionnaires to know." Hua An explained, amused he had asked. "We'll have to tie you up, of course, and-- do you mind?" Hua An held up the blindfold in her hands, clearly asking if he'd oblige her. It was framed so sweetly, despite the edge behind it. It seemed like Hua An would, wherever possible, maintain at least an air of harmony.

If all the women in his life were like Hua An, Kiran thought he would turn into paranoid madman trying to uncover how he was being manipulated by them. He didn't believe the General did things on mere whims. Every action, every word, had some meaning to it, but it was a meaning only Hua An knew.

"Of course," Kiran admitted quite seriously. "You're a force to be reckoned with, and anyone who thinks you would be taken down easily is clearly deluding themselves." His previous encounter with Hua An may have been short, but he had gotten a sense of what she was capable. She could have easily killed him right then and there, and this second meeting would never have happened.

He eyed her hesitantly, doubtful his opinion would ever change from supporting the Nobles. His ideals simply didn't align with what the Emperor represented. "You make it sound like my opinions shift with the wind." His mouth curled in a small teasing smirk. "Do you think I'm like a child constantly changing what he dreams to be when he grows up?" He tilted his head slightly, feeling the tickle of teal hair at the back of his neck. He knew it was possibly his opinion on things might change in the future. He had stubbornly believed all of the Legionnaire were horrible people until he actually got to know some of them and now even thought of a few Legionnaire as his friends. But he didn't see what the Legionnaire could offer him that would actually sway him to their side.

Naturally she wouldn't give him an answer. Kiran held back a huff, frustrated that he would gain no information on the Legionnaire for his trouble on this mission. The only thing he had to tell the Nobles when he returned was that his Captain had betrayed him. Betrayed all the Nobles. It wasn't a report he looked forward to giving. Kiran stared warily at the blindfold held in the General's hands. He didn't relish the idea of being blinded while still surrounded by the enemy. He snorted a laugh and rolled a shoulder in a shrug. "Do I really have a choice in the matter?" One way or another, they were going to tie him up, so he decided he might as well cooperate with them. Maybe he wouldn't receive any more injuries that way. He held up his arms, hands practically touching. "Go ahead."

Hua An took the compliment happily. At least Kiran was not stupid-- in fact, she suspected that he could see through her charade in his own way. He might not know exactly what he was seeing, but she suspected he did know that it was not the truth. She sighed, tipped her head, pressed one of her sharp nails lightly against her perfectly glossed lips. "How I wish you could be persuaded to change sides and fight for us, I think I could be fond of you," she said. "A pity!"

If they were going to kill him, they already would have. His hesitation amused her further, and she did love to be amused. Hua An smiled at him, the amusement showing, as he asked. She shook her head. No, she was saying, you don't have a choice. Hua An stepped forward, then behind him, slipped the bandanna gently around his eyes and tied it in place firmly. She checked it.

She stepped away, and one of her Captains came over. They bound his wrists, visibly more violent. They were not as confident as their leader, and as such could not afford her airs of civility. They were fairly gentle, however, on Hua An's silent behest as they urged him to his feet and supported his weight. Someone went to his other side to hold him there, too.

"Oh, Kiran, imagine if you and I fought for the same cause?" Hua An said, softly, as they led Kiran away. Her distilled flower perfume drifted lazily towards the group as they parted ways, long after they'd left it seemed. As if her ghost followed them.

They would lead him to one of his own patrol's routes, after a brief walk around and some misleading side turns, and then be left for them to find. They'd advise him not to move far, of course, lest he hurt himself.
