Parsnip was beginning to seriously question his decision to leave Watership Down and follow a hlessi to a new warren. True, Potato hadn't lied about all the food. He'd never seen so much of it in his entire life, despite his marli's best efforts to shield him and his brothers from famine. But he missed his marli and his brothers and his friends and all the rabbits he'd left behind. The new warren was several days travel from Watership Down... he'd never even said good-bye, his marli probably thought he'd stopped running. He'd messed up much too badly to go home, but everything smelled different and looked different and he didn't understand any of the rules. Nothing made sense!
He sulked outside in the cold winter air, too ashamed to seek out Mudslide. He was nearly an adult, but he felt like a kitten. He wanted his marli and failing that, he wanted a good long cry.

Blueberry came out of the warren slowly into the wintery air. He spotted a young buck out in the cold and sidled up to him. "What are you doing out in the cold young one? Still confused about settling in with us? I can try to answer some of your questions, if you have any."

Parsnip started at the other buck's approach. He didn't know him - but he didn't know anyone here at all. His first instinct was to trust the other male, for in his short life he'd met hardly anyone he couldn't trust, but he didn't understand these rabbits and their strange ways. And it wasn't like he could ask the question closest to his heart: how to go home. For better or worse, this was the life he had chosen. And Mudslide had followed him.
But if the other buck was willing to answer questions... this was his home now. He needed to learn its ways and learn them quickly so that he could look after his brother. He was responsible for this mess, the least he could do was ensure Mudslide didn't suffer for his mistakes.
"Is it always the does that make the rules?" He asked, testing the water.

"Yes, the warren found that the does were better with their tricks than us bucks," Blueberry said, settling by the little rabbit. "I do not mind it, though you'd do well by trying to get in good standing with a doe in a good position quickly or you may end up getting overlooked," he said, tilting his head to the side. "Does are very important to this warren, they lead, make the most important decisions, and continue the growth of the warren, it is right they should be recognized for how special they are to a warren."

Parsnip wasn't opposed to does being in charge, per say, but it was just so different from the way his old warren was run. "At my old warren, the chief and captain of the owsla and most of the owsla were bucks," he said. "But my marli's a runner," he said, trailing off. "She's really fast, and clever too..."
But this wasn't his old warren. Things were different. And maybe if the does were in charge, then it meant there was less pressure for bucks to become runners... "Are there are a lot of storytellers?" he asked hopefully.

"Not so far," Blueberry said. "But there will be, and they'll keep you little one's entertained while I'll strive to be someone the does can flock after. Do you miss your Marli?" he asked, looking to the young rabbit.

Parsnip was disappointed that there were few storytellers in the warren. One of his best friends growing up had been a storyteller... "Are storytellers respected?" He asked cautiously.
Parsnip wanted to cry. He missed his marli a lot, more than he cared to admit. He worried that she'd gotten hurt, looking for him and Mudslide. "My marli and my brothers," he admitted. He frowned. Mudslide had followed him and he had to look after him now. "When I'm grown... I heard someone talking about marks. What are those?"
