Marsh poked her head above ground, checking very carefully for elil... or other dangers. Winter had been a harsh one, and rabbits had been disappearing ever since those hlessi had shown up. It seemed that many rabbits had felt that Watership was a sinking ship and had decided to abandon it. She suspected the hlessi, but given the lean winter, she doubted that elil hadn't taken their toll on rabbits more hungry than cautious that were wandering past the protection of the Owsla in search of flay.
But spring was finally here, and while the air was still chill and they weren't quite free of the threat of late snows, many greens had tentatively started to bud again. Life was returning, in more ways than one, and many of the bucks and does had already decided to get a start on the kittening season. Marsh set out carefully, a bit further from the main burrows than she might have, intent on leaving what flay had started growing back in there for those without strength to carry them. Her mind was... certainly on more than just the dangers of the past winter this day.
She had, in fact, been approached by three different bucks already. Their attempts to woo her had been flattering, but had fallen more than a little flat between the fact that she had seen them chatting up nearly every doe that had dared to come above ground for the past week, and the fact that... well, she had her heart set elsewhere. Not that Ninebark seemed to have noticed. It was odd to think that a Seer could be so completely oblivious! Though it was only doom and gloom that seemed to plague his visions... she supposed this was outside the realm of that dark gift.
It was a frustration for her. She enjoyed Ninebark's friendship, and sharing her home with him this winter had been a joy to her, even with its trials. But what she found herself feeling for the skittish red buck was more than simply friendship... but she was too shy to bring it up herself, and he really didn't seem to have the slightest clue. She also didn't want to make their friendship awkward if he wasn't interested in her that way... oh, Frith help her, this was all such a headache. Before Nine entered her life she'd turned everyone away out of nerves of a different sort, but she'd had no reason to reflect on it or feel this jittery and nervous then! If there was just some way to tell him without things being all... strange... it would be so much easier.
Marsh tried to shake her head clear and go back to watching for elil and finding some fresh flay. The deliciously sweet taste of fresh grass shoots after a long winter of dried plants and hard roots was heaven enough to take her mind off of other troubles for a while, and she gladly let it do so.

Being topside felt absolutely glorious.
Ninebark enjoyed spending the harsh winter with Marsh, but the warmer weather and Frith's bright glow had his spirits higher than they'd been much of the winter. Spring was quite literally right around the corner and though the danger he had foreseen hadn't quite come to pass, it was nigh impossible for him to be doom and gloom all the time. Spring was a time for rebirth and the tender new shoots were starting to sprout.
The russet furred rabbit dared to venture out past the warren proper - he'd been there for so long now that simply existing in the vicinity of the other rabbits didn't bother him quite as much as it used to, but it felt fantastic to stretch his legs and he was sure there would be some pleasant shoots further out, where the teeth of his fellow warrenmates did not crop them short before they had a chance to flourish. He paused for a moment, his lop ears doing their best to swivel and listen for elil. That, he found, was the one of the most comforting thing about staying around multiple rabbits. Where he wasn't as keen as hearing as they were, he could watch them to determine if he should be extra cautious.
He pressed on without that safety net, however, and paused once he found a patch of freshly growing grass.
To say Ninebark was oblivious would be rather accurate. He was oblivious to the way Marsh felt towards him, even if he rather liked her and her company. At first he thought that she must have pitied him, but now he looked on her as a true friend and one of the few he'd actually had. He absolutely feared ruining that friendship and, truth be told, although many rabbits seemed to respect him now a days, especially in the owsla, for his assistance... He lacked a certain amount of esteem, never quite able to shake the name calling and the dislike that plagued him at his previous warren. He simply made the assumption that a doe, particularly a doe like Marsh, would not view him as mate material.
He sat up, spying his friend moving along the down. He thumped the ground leisurely, not one that a rabbit would mistake for a warning, in an effort to grab her attention. Though flay was something that was not yet abundant, he felt like he had stumbled upon a feast.

All confused affections aside, when Marsh heard the thump and looked up to see him it made her very glad. It was nice to see him out and about, not feeling the need to hide from everyone anymore. He was hardly a social butterfly now, but neither was Marsh in all honesty. But at least he'd gained a little more confidence in himself.
She made her way over, ever peeking for elil here and there, and made her pleasure at his company known with a short but affectionate cheek nuzzle. "Good morning, Nine!" She uttered it quite chipperly, her previous pensive mood all but evaporated. "Frith sees you well this day, I hope?" Certainly he'd seemed fine earlier, and seemed in good spirits now, but checking on him had become ingrained in her over the winter. It was as much a part of her daily routine as grooming and eating flay.

"Good morning!" He greeted the doe with a faint grin, but his tone was a chipper one and he settled on his haunches. He was quite happy to have seen her topside at that moment, if anything because her presence both cheered and comforted him and because he wanted to share what he had found thus far. Spring would be here soon and he was happy with that knowledge. Even the chill of the black rabbit couldn't chase away the warmth of the sun on his bones.
"That he does. The same with you, I hope? See the shoots I found?" The patch was still quite young, but it was flay - and not the dried stuff in the burrows or the rotten stuff that had been bogged with snow.
"Warm days will soon be here to stay for a while. Would you like to share?"
