User ImageSomething big had happened the day before. Parsnip had pestered his mother for details, but she had been disappointingly close mouthed about it. Hlessi she'd said. Stay away from the border she'd said. Well that was all well and good, but what was so special about these hlessi? Hlessi joined the warren now and then. The food situation couldn't possibly be that bad, could it? Yeah, he was hungry all the time, but that was just the way things were. He'd been born in the fall and he only had the other rabbit's word to go on that was an especially bad winter. Wasn't winter always bad? The season of death.

Parsnip was many things, but he wasn't reckless. He was ignorant of the potential dangers hlessi presented, however, and the twin motivations of curiosity and hunger drove him towards the edges of the warren. He told himself he was just looking for some roots to gnaw, but deep down he wanted to see the hlessi. Where were they from? Where were they going?

User ImageMudslide was a grumpy, grumpy boy.

He harrumphed like an old badger, and picked a piece of root out of his fur. Sweetspire had told him enough information to sate his curiosity, but he wasn't about to let on like he knew! Hlessi had been turned away, she'd said. He didn't really get it himself; he knew that there wasn't much food to go around, but that just seemed kind of harsh.

Granted, he would have been just fine practicing his drills along side her, but Parsnip was at it again. SOMEONE had to be the bigger buck here, and keep his brother in line! The bumbling outskirter trailed after his adventurous kin, ducking behind anything he could to stay out of sight, all while making as much noise as possible.

User ImagePotato wasn't as bold as his "hlessi" comrades. They had split up now, to avoid compromising the mission if one of them should be discovered by the other warren's owsla. Things would probably still turn hot sooner or later, and they needed to contact as many rabbits as possible before that. But Potato hadn't dared to set foot on the down again since they were sent away. The others were better at blending in. Feather ear had a good colour for staying hidden in snow, and both Lark and Yona had common enough pelt colours to pass for warren rabbits at a quick glance. His distinctive blotches and dark colours meant he stood out like a sore thumb, and he was sure any owsla would notice quickly. Ginger paw had the same problem with his bright coat and unusual ears, but the ginger buck still seemed to have more confidence.

He skulked in the wooded area just below the down, hoping to bump into females who dared to forage this far out. So far, no luck. There were plenty of tracks, and he could see that rabbits had nibbled on bark and low branches. Rabbits had come here to eat at some point, and hopefully someone would come here again.

A noise made him stand up on his haunches. It didn't sound like elil... It almost sounded as if someone was making their way downhill. His nose twitched. Someone a bit smaller, so probably not owsla. Please be female, please be female!

Nearly at the bottom of the hill and the edge of the woods, Parsnip stopped and turned around, standing on his haunches. He'd been content to pretend he didn't notice Mudslide until then, but he didn't want to go any further without his brother by his side. And he wanted to make sure his brother wouldn't report anything to their marli! "I know you're there Mudslide," he said, "so you may as well come out."

"You're no fun," Mudslide pouted. He slipped out of his expert hiding place to made his way to his brother's side. His bruises still hadn't had a chance to heal, so walking was a little more awkward than usual. Okay, total lie - walking was always awkward because, well, he was pretty awkward himself. "What are you doing out here, anyway? Ol' Marli's going to give you an ear full when we get back." He could see it now; probably because he'd lived through it more times than he'd like to count. It made him smile to think about, though. She was only able to discipline her progeny because she cared.

User ImageRabbits. And he could hear two voices... Potato wasn't sure if this was a good thing or not... They sounded young, or female, and that was what he needed. He took a deep breath and moved closer to the voices. He could see the back of the one standing up now, and the young rabbit seemed to talk to someone else.

"Ah... hello?" he called softly.

It would be best just to dive in. If he was met with hostility he should hopefully be able to hold his own against an outskirter or two.

"I'm not doing anything except looking for some roots to eat," he lied. "Although if you can keep a secret..." He grinned at Mudslide, ready to spill all when a voice behind him made him jump half our of skin. He whirled around and nearly went tharn at the sight of the dark rabbit. The black rabbit! He'd come for him, just like he'd come for his father and his grandfather and his great-grandfather.

But... this rabbit was only dark, not black, and the black rabbit wouldn't say hi in such a timid voice. "Hlessi," he squeaked. So it was true! Hlessi really had visited the down and been turned away. His marli was going to be furious.

While his smarter brother had the good sense to remain afraid, Mudslide had other plans. At first he had been ready to chew out Parsnip, too call him out on his secrets, when he'd heart it. The outskirter hadn't had to turn to see the Hlessi, but he did wish he could run.

He took a half-step between his brother and the darker rabbit. Despite his shaking paws, he stood firm, head held up, if not high. "Hello and goodbye," Mudslide tipped his head. "We're not supposed to talk to you, and I'm not gonna get in trouble just because of you!"

User ImageMales. Definitely males. It made sense that outskirters would be pushed out to the edges of the warren territory to forage, but it was disappointing nevertheless. The cocky one in the back annoyed him, and he turned slightly sideways, keeping an eye on the pair. He wasn't nervous any longer. So what if he didn't manage to recruit them. They didn't need half grown males.

"You are already talking to me," he pointed out, "And what makes you think I'd want to talk to you? You'd just blabber to someone and then there would be rabbits all over my flay."

Whether Parsnip was the smarter sibling was debatable, as was his common sense. He was faster and less clumsy, true, but the only thing that held his impulsive nature in check was his fear of death - and a lot of that fear was linked to farm raids. As to the hlessi... he was outnumbered two to one and Parsnip had come down here to see if the rumors about the hlessi were true. Why be frightened? Mudslide and him could take on any dumb old hlessi, never mind that they were outskirters. This was still Watership Down land; that meant they were safe.

"Flay?" he said suspiciously. "It's winter and there's nothing out here but old roots. You're not eating flay from the farm, are you?" he asked, horrified. "The black rabbit dances there."

"Eat all the flay you want. It's all in your head, anyway, and if it keeps you away from the roots, then have as much as you want!" Ever emboldened by his brothers presence, Mudslide shifted to get a better look at the hlessi. Why did his brother want to come out this far? Didn't Parsnip know- Ooooooh. All at once, it came to him. He turned a shrewd look at his brother, "Was this what you were really looking for?" He whispered, in anything, but a whisper. "Better find another one. This one's half-mad!"

User ImageOne of his ears started to tilt further and furhter back. Were they trying to annoy him on purpose? Well, it was working...

"I don't need the farm," he said, "Rabbits who gather enough flay in the warm months don't have to scramble for food in the winter. And unlike your warren, our warren worked hard before the snow fell."

He was probably saying too much, but the outskirters were getting under his skin, and he dropped his meek hlessli act for a moment. Potato turned and flipped his back feet at them in a rude gesture.

"Go ahead and eat your bitter roots if you can find any," he called over his shoulder, "I don't need them, as you might see. I've got a warm burrow and plenty of flay to go back to. How about you?"

He was certainly in better shape than the scrawny outskirters, and from what he'd seen up at the hill he was bulkier than many of the adults too. The unmarked males in his warren might be low in status, but they never had to starve.

"I want to know where the hlessi are from," Parsnip replied to Mudslide, not even trying to whisper.

Food that didn't come from a farm? Parsnip's ear twitched and he remembered some of the stories Fig had told him. Stories about other warrens, full of flay and pretty does. Until now he'd thought they were just stories, but it was true that the rude hlessi before them was awfully well fed.

He bit back an angry retort about how hard their warren had worked, how his father had died while finding food for them, and considered the most important part of the hlessi's statement: he didn't need the farm. He didn't need the farm.

"You get food... without raiding farms?" he asked, stunned. If there were no raids, then there would be no risk, no death... his mind reeled at the implications.

User ImageHe stood up on his hind legs, as if to check them out. If they weren't completely daft they'd see that he was indeed well fed. He hadn't groomed properly, but that was an act to look the part of a hlessi. Looking submissive came naturally for him, and that had completed the act. But between the wet and scruffy fur he wasn't all that bad off. And with these two punks he wasn't at all interested in acting submissive.

"Do I look like a starving hlessi?" he asked, "Hmmm? I know where to find food, without taking stupid risks. You're just two stupid kids born during the wrong season."

He dropped down on all fours and sat sideways again, staring at them as if he didn't know what to think. He wondered if they'd be curious and/or stupid enough to follow him back. They did need to boost their numbers, even if these two were the wrong gender.

"I think you're too stupid to find out where I come from," he said and turned his back to them, walking away without much hurry. They might follow, they might not. He didn't really care, and that showed in his body language.
