I've heard of kiku(chrisanthemum), and how its the flower of the emperor.
Yeah, the Kiku...you know I heard that for a while it was illegal to use it as a family crest because of that. On another note, I always thought it was funny that in my Japanese textbook kiku is listed in the first chapter vocabulary..I mean, how many people are going around needing a translation for Chrysanthenums??? At least, beginners?
I read this really cool and interesting about the kikubug (chrysanthemum beetle eek ) and how it got its name... goes like this:
A man and his wife hired a maid named Kiku. She was a beautiful young girl and the husband's eyes started wandering. The wife suspected such and framed Kiku by breaking one of the family heirloom dishes and blaming it on Kiku. So he bound her and threw her down the well near the house. Its said she punished them at night by breaking all ten dishes going "Ichi, ji, " etc while they tried to sleep, giving it the name of "Mansion of dishes" I forget the Japanese translation for it lol....
Anyway this beetle is called the Kikubug because if you look at its back you'll see a what appears to a girl with long dark hair and her hands tied behind her back! :gasp:
There's also a story involving a specific crab and samurais.
I just love legends and "origin" stories like that! whee
