So, I've been thinking lately, and I figure it'd be fun to put some thought into handseals. We all use them, all jutsu require them unless blatantly stated otherwise, but the guild itself has never really put much work into them, and looking at the wiki, neither has canon. We know the tiger seal is used for fire jutsu, and if you do a tiny bit of research you know rat is used for shadow jutsu, but that's about it.

Now, before anyone starts to get the wrong idea, I'm not proposing any new systems. Just a bit of thought. Some lore, some jutsu theory even, which could be fun to mess with for people who enjoy putting a lot of background into their jutsu usage or creation. Custom creators could use the ideas gained from this to put a bit more depth into their customs as well, which always makes them interesting. Maybe, if it works out well, we could even use it as a base if we do ever start an actual hand seal system.

With that said, basically what I want to do, is look at each seal and consider what it might represent. I read an interesting fanfic awhile back that did this, and that's likely where I got the idea from. Sadly, I can't remember the name of that fic, so I can't go look at it. (If anyone knows which one I'm talking about, awesome. Please share?)

Tora, as we know, is used for fire. It's the only one I can remember from that fic, which attributed it's attribute to power. Seems fitting for the seal almost all fire jutsu end with. Each seal, then, has it's own attribute along those lines. The order of sealing alters and mixes the attributes, until the jutsu is created. So, I want to look at the attribute of each seal.

For convenience, these are the seals.

Bird: The bird represents FLIGHT. When the bird takes flight, there is none that can stand before it. This seal is used in many wind jutsu.
Boar:
Dog: The dog represents TRACKING. It's nose can follow any scent, to any distance, without fail.
Dragon:
Ox: The ox represents DEFENSE. It is sturdy, and sound, and will balk to no man.
Tiger: The tiger represents POWER. It's strength adds overwhelming power to a jutsu, but also brings instability. It is primarily used for fire jutsu, due to the element's association with both.
Serpent: The serpent represents fluidity and CHANGE. It's motions are smooth and unending, and it sheds old skins to begin anew.
Rat:
Horse:
Monkey:
Hare:
Ram: The ram represents FORCE. It is most commonly used to draw more power from one's reserves, adding it to the jutsu.

That's the ones I have so far. I'm still looking for more, so I'd love idea from anyone who likes the idea, or even just criticisms on my own choices.

Kakashi's Water Dragon jutsu as far as I could tell progressed from Boar to Monkey to Ox to Serpent to Tiger, followed by him jumping backward and using the final sign that looks like Horse. At least that's the ones I could pick out amid his blurry hands. There MIGHT have been a dog in there somewhere, I'm viewing on youtube, and it doesn't like to pause at the right moments, so I've been watching and rewatching.

Water Prison used by Zabuza is much easier to see and required Serpent, Dragon, Hare, Dragon, Hare, and one unidentified one where the thumbs and index fingers touch in an open palm toward Kakashi.

Shark Missile uses the following: Tiger, Ox, Dragon, Hare, Bird, Dragon, Ram in that order. This further confirms Tiger's necessity for powerful techniques especially.

As far as those tell us, Serpent could be used primarily to provide for Suiton techniques, at least in a portion to fluidity. While Ox would be used for rigidity, or shaping. Horse for Speed, and Monkey for Motion/Aiming. Boar could be used for Power when involved in such a technique. Dragon might be used for defensive strength since they are supposedly covered by a superior defense, and Hare could be used for a quick initial speed meant for trapping.

If you'd like I could research more of the cannon jutsu.

@Timmy: It actually matters surprisingly little to me if the definitions we came up with, or even seal sequences if we took it that far, match the anime/manga at all. That said though, the possible ideas you did find are fairly cool. And I suppose it would be neat if doing this matched up in some way with canon principles.

The real problem I've run into, just trying to do it by animal representation (And a tad bit of canon.), is that half the time I end up with multiple seals feeling like they want the same meaning. Boar, Dragon, Ox, Tiger, and Ram, for instance, all feel like representations of power. An ox is a very solid creature, so I gave that to it. I nearly gave ram impact, making it good for breaching defenses, but it was also the seal that always crops up when someone in the show just wants to channel or focus their chakra, so I put it to that. Dragon feels like it needs some big awesome meta-physical meaning though. Nothing so plain as defense or power.

Serpent is my favorite... I almost instantly attributed it to fluidity, which I then renamed to change. I can see it being used in all sorts of jutsu requiring fluid motion, such as water, sand, any sort of jutsu that moves in a fluid way, or just on it's own really. And possibly also healing techniques.

@ Hinote
Here, Might I suggest these?
Bird: The bird represents FLIGHT. When the bird takes flight, there is none that can stand before it. This seal is used in many wind jutsu.
Boar: The Boar represents LIFE, It's power transcends it's mortal coils to give it the bravery to win at all costs. It is used in many jutsu that take on forms of animals and Hiton techniques.
Dog: The dog represents TRACKING. It's nose can follow any scent, to any distance, without fail.
Dragon: The Dragon represents MIGHT, It provides strength beyond reach of normal mortals, and binds a jutsu together so tightly that even water becomes solid yet fluid.
Rat:
Horse: The horse represents SPEED, It's speed is nearly unmatched and allows it to outrun any opposition. It is used to provide speed to a technique.
Monkey: The Monkey represents BALANCE, It is used to restore stability to a jutsu whose chakra's are imbalanced. It is used in all types of jutsu in order to retain control over one's own chakra.
Hare: The Hare represents REACTION, It's quick agile body provides it's strengths to the jutsu, allowing for near instantaneous movements, and unpredictable motions amid combat.
Ram: The ram represents FORCE. It is most commonly used to draw more power from one's reserves, adding it to the jutsu

I'm still not sure what to do for Rat.

As far as them being used for Canon purposes, while most of them would use power, power can be split up, and even the seals use portions lending to power. ( Ex. If Tiger is strongest, then you wouldn't want to use tiger for a jutsu like Chakra Scalpel since that would make you end up with pretty much a sword, or an imbalance of chakra leaning on the heavy side. so you'd use another power source, probably Ram or Boar which would be the two lower level ones. )
