This is a PRP between Van (Kurama no Koishi) and Kiran (Kazu-chan).

Setting:
Van can't resist the opportunity to pull a prank when she sees a familiar mop of blue hair just ahead in the crowd.

It was a sunny day in the city for once, the winter beginning to release the continent from its cold grip. This was evident in the way the farmers’ market had taken a sudden upward turn, and Lunarians from all across town had come out of their warm homes to get their fresh produce and browse the other streetside shops. Van was one of the Lunarians in the packed streets with a full bag of groceries on her shoulder, trying to push her way through the bustling crowd so she could return to the office and relieve herself of the ridiculous load.

As the captain squeezed in between two women on her way out, she noticed someone up ahead whom, at this point, she’d recognize anywhere. It was a little loud for her voice to carry over the crowd, so she jogged up behind him, a small smile stretching her lips as she reached a hand out to tap him on the shoulder.

Before she could touch him, though, something compelled her to pause. Van lowered her hand instead, reaching carefully into the man’s back pocket for his wallet. It was almost as if she was recreating the circumstances of their first meeting as Academy students, except that this time she was the one trying to pocket something from him. She wasn’t actually trying to steal anything, of course—as soon as he noticed it was missing she’d give it back. She just wanted to see how long it would take before he actually noticed.

Unfortunately, Van was unable to stop herself from giggling briefly once she actually had his wallet in hand, so his noticing might be sooner rather than later. She’d given herself away.

The market was loud as always, maybe more so since the day was pleasantly sunny. Kiran took his time meandering through the crowd as he looked here and there at the produce being offered by all the different shops. He still wasn't the greatest cook in the world, though he liked to think he was getting better. Maybe. At the very least, nothing that he cooked made him ill, and even if it wasn't always the tastiest of meals, it was at least edible, unlike some of the meals his mother cooked. Still, any time he could simply grab some fruit or vegetables that didn't require much preparation to snack on was good enough for him.

Kiran stopped in front of one of the shops, looking over the selection of various produce like apples and oranges. There was some corn and bananas and carrots too, and a lot of other fruit and vegetables. They all looked good: perfectly ripe, no bruising, no hint that they were turning bad. But as he was making his decision on what he wanted, a large woman practically shoved him out of the way with her wide hips. Kiran frowned and narrowed his eyes as the woman started listed off her order without so much as an apology to him. He decided against making a scene with the rude woman, who apparently wanted to buy out almost everything that shop had to offer.

Walking farther down the market, he looked for another decent shop, where rude Lunarians wouldn't be likely to knock him out of the way before he could buy anything. It was then that he thought he felt something behind him. At first, he thought perhaps he was imagining that ghost of a touch. The fact that the touch was around where he kept his wallet made him feel more alert though. Someone wouldn't really be trying to pick his pocket, would they? But the giggle that followed seemed like answer enough for him.

Kiran spun around, seizing the hand that held his wallet without a second thought. But when he spotted the offender, he blinked in surprise. "Van!"

When Kiran whirled around and grabbed her wrist, Van found herself glad that his first instinct wasn’t to cut the hand off, like she would have done. It was one of many traits that made them so different from each other, but somehow they still managed to be friends most of the time. Differences aside, she was pretty sure that they rarely meant any real harm to each other—at least she hadn’t this time around. Hopefully, the fact that Kiran hadn’t disabled her meant that he recognized this... not that she would let him hurt her.

She grinned, turning her palm upward and holding the wallet out for him to take. “Looks like I’m not as good at this as I thought,” she said, unable to hide the sound of amusement from her voice.

Picking pockets required a different kind of finesse than she was used to. It required a light and purposeful hand, so different from the killing strikes the woman often dealt. There had never been any reason for her to practice it, either; Van had always made enough for her own needs. In public, too, it was probably a bad idea to be giggling while trying to rob someone blind.

No, a life of thievery was not for her, and that wasn’t her purpose today, anyway. She withdrew her hand from his grasp now, rubbing her wrist where he’d held her and chuckling as if nothing was amiss. “I saw you walking ahead and couldn’t help but catch up to you and say hi.” That was as good of an explanation as any, she figured, especially considering the fact that most pickpockets wouldn’t stop for anything. “So, hi Kiran, how’s it going?”

It hadn’t occurred to her that he might be upset with her until shortly after these words left her mouth, but she hoped he would take the gesture in stride. He was a joker too, wasn’t he?

His hold upon her wrist was loose after he recognize who it was that attempted to steal his wallet. For a time, he could only blink in response, stunned to see Van, of all people, trying to lift the wallet right out of his pocket. For as long as they knew each other, she never stole in this manner. Usually, he was the thief, as their first encounter proved.

His head tilted, mouth quirking and tugging into a playful grin. "Is this how we greet each other now?" It was a teasing joke. He could hardly blame her for trying to give him a taste of his own medicine after all this time. Though if she meant to teach him a lesson about giving up his criminal ways, it sadly wouldn't take. The only thing it might teach him would to be even cautious and aware of his own person while walking the busy streets. He wasn't the only pick pocket in town, after all.

"Next time," he plucked his wallet out of her hand, "you may want to try a softer touch. Otherwise you'll give yourself away." Not that he expected her to suddenly turn criminal and start picking every pocket in sight. "Giggling is also another dead give away." He never would have gotten anyway with his thieving ways if he giggled when he picked pockets. Not that he giggled to begin with.

Kiran rolled a shoulder, placing his hands on his hips. "Just doing the usual shopping." Life almost seemed a bit on the uneventful side after their whole fight with the pirates. "I was hoping to find some good stuff that didn't require cooking, but then big old Bertha there," he pointed a thumb in the general direction of the Lunarian he meant, "wedged me out and bought up pretty much evertyhing." He cracked a smile at Van. "Send any more pirates crying for their mommies lately?"

She found herself grinning back up at Kiran as he questioned her, the expression on her face not the slightest bit rueful. It was the only logical response to being caught, anyway; smiles always went a long way. “It could be,” she said, bringing her shoulders up in a brief shrug, “Although I feel that it’s necessary to warn you—I’m not as nice to pickpockets as you apparently are, Kiran.” Both of them could probably easily recall their first meeting, which had ended in a street fight. There were a variety of reasons they weren’t fighting now, but if it happened again she probably would have cut the perpetrator’s hand off before she noticed who it was.

“Okay, you got me. I’ll be sure to remember that next time I want to say hi,” she said, wrinkling her nose at his suggestion as she resisted the urge to laugh again. “No giggling.”

Following the direction of his thumb, it didn’t take long for Van to see who he was pointing at. “You mean that lady?” The captain raised her eyebrows. “I wouldn’t make her angry. She looks like she’d eat you if you got between her and her food.”

Van began to walk again, down the street along the line of carts and tables that sold smaller wares. At the mention of pirates, she frowned, recalling the event. It had been a tough fight, one that ached in her muscles for days afterward, but they had managed to pull out a victory and free the ship. It had been exhilarating, and made for a good story, but Van would be pleased if she never had to fight a whole ship of pirates ever again. “No, but if I ever see any of them again I’ll hit them so hard their ancestors will feel it!” she declared, shaking her fist for emphasis. She was only half joking, but she smiled anyway. “You were pretty impressive that day, yourself.”

"I'll remember that," Kiran said with a laugh. He didn't have plans to try stealing anything from Van again. Not after their initial meeting. After he won the fight, Kiran made the decision that Van was on his "never to steal from again" list. It wasn't a long list really, and he was glad to have made that decision. He doubted they would be standing here now and able to joke about things if he tried to steal from Van a second time.

Kiran smiled. It was strange to think that he might be teaching her something about thieving. He didn't think she would suddenly turn to a life a crime, but it was still amusing to him that he was giving her advice on how to better pick pockets.

He nodded in answer as he stared at the woman. "She probably would," he agreed as a grin cracked across his face. "And that certainly wouldn't be the way I'd want to go out. Eaten by that lady?" He shuddered at the very thought.

Stuffing his wallet back into his pocket, Kiran followed after Van. He rolled one shoulder then the other and arched his back in memory of the fight. It certainly had been no picnic fighting off the pirates, but he at least made it out without getting too badly banged up. Her comment made him laugh, though he was certain the threat would come true if any of the pirates dared to appear before her again. He bowed like a gentleman. "I do try so hard to impress you." He tilted his head up, grinning at Van.

“You’re fast enough to get out of her way,” Van acknowledged, glancing at the large figure in the crowd once more before shrugging, unconcerned. She didn’t doubt the man’s skill—just his judgment in sensing danger, sometimes. “But sometimes I think you enjoy the thrill of poking the bear.” It wasn’t her place to chide him for it, and after all, he didn’t seem to be too much worse for it.

The captain tilted her head back and down, catching the last of Kiran’s bow and his subsequent grin in the corner of her eye. It was so ridiculous that even she had to smile back, the expression brightening her pale face. “Do you?” Van had never noticed, though she was certain Kiran was simply being his usual self. It was clear when he was being serious, but all the other times were questionable, and the captain didn’t really bother to spare much thought for it. “I’ve only noticed that one time.”

Her smile was a mixture of fixed and playful, partly there to humor her friend but also to return his banter. It was natural for her, probably just as natural as it was for the Noble to crack jokes and laugh at almost inappropriate times. “Maybe you haven’t been trying hard enough?” she suggested, the corner of her mouth twisting further upward into something of a crooked smile.

Van reached a gloved hand back, ruffling her friend’s blue locks affectionately to show that she was joking, before he could straighten up.

Kiran grinned in amusement because, after glancing at the woman again, he had to agree that the large woman would be much to slow to keep up with his swiftness. Though a woman like that could probably be surprisingly quick when someone tried to sneak something she wanted out from under her nose. Sometimes, it was better not to stand in the way of a large woman and the food she was scrambling to buy. Kiran turned his grin back on Van with a teasing light in his eyes. "How can I not? It's incredibly fun." Though maybe he had a problem when it came to that. "Poking the bear" usually led to dangerous situations.

A disappointed pout came over him at that news, like the comment actually wounded him to know that she didn't find anything he did all that impressive. Of course, he was simply being his usual playful, teasing self, making joking comments because that was simply how he was. "I suppose I'll just have to try even harder to impress you."

The pout remained on his face as Van ruffled his hair, looking and feeling very much like a little child being teased by someone older. Kiran stood up straight, raking a hand through his blue hair like it might somehow tame the wild locks. "And what daring feats might I try to impress you?" As he folded his arms behind his head, he started walking again down the rows of vendor stalls, his eyes glancing over the various products being sold. He still needed to pick up some food to restock his cupboards.

Sending a smirk Van's way, Kiran asked, "So other than trying to pick pockets, what brings you here? Just shopping?"
