Stinkwort hopped about the large warren, constantly on the move. Her head and ears worked to take note of everyone she passed by, searching for a type of rabbit in particular: an Owsla.
One of her (many) rivals had told her that she had her own Owsla mentor, and Stinkwort had thought about it ever since. Having such a teacher would boost her chances of becoming an officer, and she would take advantage of it if she could. Surely, there would be someone willing to take her.
She paused in her step, catching sight of a silver form in the distance. She didn't know him by name, but from his battle-worn image and confident carriage, he seemed just like the buck she was looking for. Without another word, she dashed in his direction before anyone else could claim his attention.

Badassi, named for a white flowered shrub that he only somewhat resembled, was an easy buck to pick out on the down. He was massive compared to most rabbits, almost-yet-not-quite rivaling Althea's bulk, and spent much of his days out on the down's slopes monitoring the other rabbits in an effort to keep them safe. He took his task very seriously, yet he wasn't an unfriendly buck. He didn't much like the winter, though. There was snow, which was cold. He also tended to stand out on it and this afternoon was sticking closer to one of the entrances of the warren proper, ears pert and eyes ever watchful. He was actually nearly done with his watch and was to be replaced by Alderberry shortly, which he was looking forward to. He was hungry and cold, but even then he still had some foraging to do. So many sought to be amongst the owsla, but it wasn't all fame and glory. Most of it was like today - mandatory watches, foul weather, and the threat of elil. He saw Stinkwort as she approached and thought to dismiss her approach as her heading inside, but that thought was quickly demolished as she approached him directly.
"Can I help you? ... Stinkwort, is it?" He didn't really know her beyond seeing her about the down, but he recognized her as one of the recently deceased Ray's offspring and peered down at her.

Stinkwort perked up as she approached, pleased to see the large male up close. Yes, he definitely seemed like Owsla material. She was happy to see he knew who she was and nodded a confirmation. The thought that she should be embarrassed at the fact that she didn't know his own name in return didn't even register with her, and she came to a stop before him good-naturedly.
"Are you an officer?" she asked, getting straight to the point. Then, realizing she'd probably have to know more about him if she planned to stick with him, "What's your name?"

"Yes, I'm an officer."
The owsla was a bit mystified, uncertain of what the little outskirter wanted from him. Of course it wasn't really that unusual. Little ones tended to have high ambitions and those who weren't of the troublemaking variety often wanted to be amongst them, but he wasn't thinking about that at the moment - he just wanted to know why this little youngster was staring up at him and why she was interrupting the last bit of his watch with idle chit-chat.
"Badassi. Now, what's this about, hm?" He tilted his head slightly, biting at an itch that had been festering on his shoulder, before turning his mossy eyes back towards the outskirter.

"I want you to teach me about bein' an officer," Stinkwort said boldly. Then, realizing she wouldn't want to be spoken in such a manner when she was an Owsla, she added, "Please."
Unfortunately for her, to another, she seemed just like the type of rabbit who wanted to be an officer because of the assumed prestige. She was still young: though she understood death was a real possibility, she didn't truly comprehend the risks and responsibilities that came with the rank. Her brash tendencies and ill temper did little to help, and, in fact, served only to emphasize her own ignorance.
But she could learn in time, could she not? No matter the hardships, this was a path she was set on, and she looked toward Badassi with a steady gaze.

"That's a mighty tall order for such a young rabbit." He looked down at her sternly, but really - the massive buck was very much amused. She certainly had some nerve about her. Still, rabbits that vied for the position of owsla were a dime a dozen and very few does made it into the ranks. He settled on his haunches, paws tucked against his chest, as he peered down his nose at her.
"And why, Frith tell, should I take you on as my shadow and teach you to be an owsla? Do you have a good reason?" He tilted one ear down as the other swiveled towards a bird call in the distance - but it wasn't elil and he was not alarmed. If anything, he found this young doe amusing. He would probably humor her, at least until she got bored or wizened up and realized how dangerous it truly was.
