THE CHOSEN Name: Ferdinand Caballero Hermoso Nickname: Ferdie (you will die) Gender: Male Age: 49 (born April 8th) Occupation: Butcher Homeland: Hesperia Residence: Western Palisade Obligatory Man Man Song: SparksAppearanceTall and thin, it would be easy to mistake Ferdinand for frail, if not for his sharp features reminiscent more of a predator than a man. It's true—despite the limp on his left side, he was a matador once, and is still a force to be reckoned with. Underneath his frayed clothing are countless scars and even a few good gore-marks littering his lithe, lightly muscled frame. His green eyes, contrasted against his tanned skin and dark hair, would look handsome if they weren't always narrowed in a harsh gaze. He has a snide, scornful air about him, walking proudly and moving with a near-fluid grace that would be expected more of a noble. Well, he was noble once, too. PersonalityA man roughly hewn from years of fights, struggles, and loss, it's apparent that although he's yet to let it beat him down, Ferdinand is not without his scars. Bitter of his lost family, fame, and wealth, resentful of his newly-gained low status after moving from his homeland to Sunderland, Ferdinand's arrogance more often than not turns into a hateful insolence when dealing with superiors. But then, he's not good with most people in general, seemingly intent on driving others off with his short words and cruel manner. Having lost so much, the only thing he's afraid of is to lose any more. What better way to ensure he doesn't, then to have nothing at all? It makes sense when you're desperate.
Ferdinand's not afraid to fight, often impatient and easily riled up himself. He can be civil, most likely when you catch him in one of his rare, somber moods, but it's unlikely you'd ever be able to make friends with the guy. Then again, why would you want to? Well sure, with his perpetually sour attitude, it's hard to imagine Ferdinand as a reliable friend when he so often refuses to rely on others himself. But, if you do manage to win his trust—and frankly, that will take a lot of patience he's not willing to give back—then Ferdinand's the kind of guy you can count on, devoted and honorable when it's time to step it up. Beneath all the hurt and hate, there's still a bold, passionate fire that refuses to go out. HistoryWith the relatively new art of bullfighting taking Hesperia, Ferdinand became well known for his skill in the ring, each season drawing in crowds hoping to witness the talents of these new matadors. Ferdinand studied all there was to the art diligently, and in fact it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that the ring was his life. He loved it not only for the celebrity it brought him, but for bringing honor to the Caballero name and, most of all, for the sake of mastering the art itself. Perhaps the only thing that made him happier was his family, a wife that accepted his dangerous occupation and a son that would take up the mantle and continue what would be the great Caballero line of fighters!!
At least, that's what Ferdinand wanted. His son had no interest in becoming a bullfighter, instead enthralled with the far less dangerous arts of painting and literature. What. Despite his wife's protests, Ferdinand pressured his son into becoming a matador as he was, because there was a future here, honor to be had...! But after a rather nasty gore wound in his leg that left Ferdinand taking a break from the ring, his son rather guiltily hoped that would be the end of that. Unfortunately for him, Ferdinand only became more overbearing now that he was stuck home all the time. As soon as he could take up the capote again, he said, they would both be in the ring. Ferdinand would make his comeback, and his son would be debuting young as he had, because Caballeros were prodigies in this new art.
Not so much a prodigy, his son's first time in the ring would also be his last. He refused to fight, only seventeen years old when he was killed by the bull in one of the most cowardly yet eerily inspiring spectacles the ring had seen. Ferdinand was, to say the least, horrified. Only too late had he realized his selfishness, his son killed because of him and his wife gone, unable to stay with such a foolishly proud man. Well, he certainly had nothing to be proud of now, the Caballero name disgraced. There was nothing left for him in Hesperia. At the suggestion of a former fan, an aficionado from Sunderland, Ferdinand decided it was time for a new scene. Perhaps Palisade would be kinder to him.
But not really because he's now stuck with a dumb deer ugh

THE DETAILS Hesperiagonna write some words about this country here BullfightingIt was once believed that unicorns roamed the Hesperian landscapes, magical creatures that could cure any ailment with a touch of that single horn. But their cloven hooves carried them far, and fast, so that a man could consider himself lucky if he so much as caught a glimpse of that lionlike tail disappearing into the trees. Villages blessed with a visit from a unicorn would undoubtedly prosper, and stories of sightings in the woods and hills were always cropping up. They were a distant, but all the same beloved figure of the culture, celebrated and sought after for their beauty and power. There were even whispers that unicorns could grant immortality, and were immortal themselves... save for one thing: the horn gore of a raging bull, savage antithesis of everything the unicorn was.
It is said that the first king of Hesperia had tamed a unicorn, and was thus marked as divine ruler of church and country. The nobility who could afford it would sacrifice a bull each year in reverence to their sovereign and his steed, and over centuries, the tradition grew into the more ritualized art form it is now. Nobles and peasants alike display their bravery, pride, and mastery over the beasts and death itself, in a way—should a torero make it through the spectacle—achieving immortality after all.
Of course, Ferdinand scoffs at the idea of unicorns. He just liked to kill and was good at it. Conor Sewardalso gonna write about ferdie's benefactor and bff (ha)

THE COMPANION Quijada brings out the rarer sides of both Ferdinand and Rocinante. Although it's not much, Ferdinand can be somewhat affectionate with the rook, having grown fond of the bird after getting over the initial shock of him speaking. Rocinante, meanwhile, is terribly jealous of Quijada and the fact that Ferdinand is outwardly nice to him. He tries to intimidate and drive Quijada way, but he doesn't ever seem at all fazed, blithely perching on his antlers or occasionally mocking him in Ferdinand's voice. Rocinante hates that bird.
