Wouldn't the gravitational force ensure that they'd all end up as one star?

Unless they all orbit 'round a common barycentre. It's not like we don't know of several systems of stars who are gravitationally bound. User Image

It could work with more, but the formation on the picture may not be an exact representation of the formation. User Image

A few of the planets does experience never having any night-time trough some periods of time.
