H.P. LOVECRAFT'S

Fear of the Unknown

This will be an Open Style RP, set in our Modern World (with many fictional elements and locations), and based on the Mythos of famed horror author H.P. Lovecraft.
The focus of this RolePlay will be on Investigation, Mystery, and of course, Horror!
If you're not familiar with Lovecraft's work, you can still play! I will fill in the gaps, and set up all the Lovecraftian images and information

Key Notes & Rules

- I will be conducting "Fear of the Unknown" as an Open RolePlay, but with some key elements of traditional D&D Style play. I have no preconceived agenda of a story, so I will be unfolding the story as it progresses based on how YOU make it.

- I will not be playing a character in the story, but rather I will take the role of Narrator. This means that I will give updates on the state of the world, as well as events surrounding each character's journey.

- You are free to create your own story as you please, but when faced with key moments, I will pitch in to control events.

- If you choose to encounter areas where there could be secrets, or find an item hidden within a wall, floor, forest, cave, etc. you will have to pause your play so that I can reveal what you have come across.

- Finally, at certain moments I will chime in to request that you make a die roll, and I will use the result to determine your success in certain matters, as well as to create random situations that you will have to deal with.
As an extension to this point, I reserve the ability to control events outside of space & time (meaning that I can make minor alterations to moments of your story in order to insert NPC action or events).

FICTIONAL ELEMENTS:

- There will be No Magic, and all players will be human.

- Even though the setting is Modern Day Earth, you can still be creative with locations, events, monsters, mutations, etc. Lovecraft has plenty of fictional towns, nestled away in places seldom visited by the public, including the dream world, as well as many different kinds of creatures.
If you're not familiar with Lovecraft's work, NOT TO WORRY: If you say that you find a town in the middle of the forest, or a mysterious seaside village, I will describe in Narration where you are and what the location is like.

AND NOW...

I will start the story, and anyone is free to jump in!
(I will make specific notes and adjustments as we go along)

Everybody have fun, let the Mysteries unfold, and be careful... For the worst of all fears... is the Fear of the Unknown!

INTRODUCTION

People love to recite Franklin D. Roosevelt's famous quote: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself"... But that's not quite right, is it? There are plenty of real, tangible things in this world that we have every logical reason to fear. Instead of living life by this one great man's encouraging words, we could all benefit from the words of another great man in our world's history, one Howard Phillips Lovecraft.

Lovecraft is notable for his works of fiction involving fear: Of the Unknown things that roam in the dark, or in the very real world of our dreams, and especially of a very specific set of Ancient Alien Gods and their horrific appetites... But every piece of fiction has some basis in reality. In Lovecraft's case, the fiction is the minority.

CURRENT EVENTS

It has been written of in that book of unknown horrors, the words of the Mad Arab Alhazred himself, the one and only Necronomicon, that when the stars are right, the ancient city of R'Lyeh will rise from the sea. Within this city, the Dark Priest Cthulhu sleeps, and dreams of the moment when he can awaken to reclaim the world as his own...

Some believe that this time is now. The Cults of Cthulhu are active. The Esoteric Order of Dagon is stirring. The Crawling Chaos lurks among men...
They believe this not because they have seen it with their own eyes, but because they have seen signs in the events of the world:
News articles have popped up about people losing their minds. People found engaging in cannibalism, dark rituals, mass homicides... Some have been ranting and raving of a coming apocalypse, of demons in the night... Others have gone to sleep, and refused to wake, losing themselves in the Land of Dreams to escape the madness that encroaches on them like a vice pressing in on their skulls...

CONCLUSION

Now you have the building blocks of knowledge to decide for yourself. Is this just a series of coincidental horrific events? Or has the reign of madness and despair begun once again?
