Hi ladies! I am new to the guild and somewhat new to gaia (I was very active on the site six years ago but haven't been on since.) Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a wife and stay-at-home mom, and I've been a Christian for about eleven years now. Recently I have been meditating on 1 Peter 1:13-19, "Be holy!" So challenging! Glad to be a part of your guild!

A couple of things stood out to me. I'm traveling with out my study Bible right now, but when I get home I want to do a word study on the word "sober" in verse 13. The verse is challenging us to have minds that are "alert and fully sober." I think this entails taking care of your body: making sure you get enough sleep (so not staying up till 3 a.m. when your kids get up at 8... you know, just as a random example...) etc.
I'm also loving this:
"Since you call on a Father who judges each person's work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect."
This kills me! I so do not take my sin seriously enough sometimes. I was bought with SUCH a high price, Christ's precious blood! I could go on and on about this passage... there's just so much.

I wonder what else he could be trying to say? Alert and sober can mean so many different things depending on that person's life! Alert means:
a : watchful and prompt to meet danger or emergency
b : quick to perceive and act
A Godly woman/man should always be alert, alert with their lives, while being around others etc.
But look at all these meanings for Sober:
a : sparing in the use of food and drink : abstemious
b : not addicted to intoxicating drink
c : not drunk

: marked by sedate or gravely or earnestly thoughtful character or demeanor

: unhurried, calm
4
: marked by temperance, moderation, or seriousness
5
: subdued in tone or color
6
: showing no excessive or extreme qualities of fancy, emotion, or prejudice
Wow, you can put to use so many of these descriptions in your daily life as you walk with Christ, and live your life. The quote you used for alert and sober, I noticed you used fully as in God wants this to impact your entire being, and state of mind in complete entirety. That is a pretty interesting sentence that can mean so much!
God has spoken before about how as men and women of Christ we should be of this Earth, but not in it, and your second text brings that out again. As if to make sure we are being sober about the way we live on this Earth, and being alert to the charms and perishable things that can tempt us. So then again both of these things you've written about can be tied together!
I have to agree with you - I try to be good, but there are times where my arrogance blinds me from my sin, and I try to make excuses for why I acted the way I did. I believe that as people we do not want to believe we do wrong, make wrong decisions, and we certainly don't want to think what we do is a sin.....Especially if it feels right to do it, so I believe when God tells us that we were bought it is to try and humble us, and show us that God is bigger then our desires, and wants that only he is perfect.
