I decided to dabble in it. Might get more serious about it as I finish my final dream avatar. I have seen in other guilds that it gets expensive and annoying, but I still want to check it out. Any serious alchemists in here? Or even dabblers?

I'm somewhat serious, and doing alchemy on a budget!
Actually, most alchemists waiting until Gaia gets their reworking of alchemy done. But if you still want to start, I suggest going to the Alchemy subforum and looking in guides there. There's a lot of great ones, including a beginner's guide. Research is really important so you don't waste time and gold on wasteful formulas.
Are you starting off at level 1?

Is there a way to skip levels? Waiting is fine, any idea when this change will take place?

No way to skip levels, unless you decide to hire an alchemist to make a high level item for you instead of leveling yourself (useful if you only want a few items out of it). Also, no idea on when the alchemy update with be. Hopefully the first part of this year, but we've heard nothing certain.

There are some items that I want that can be alchemized, but I would rather level myself to it. I hope the changes take place soon.

Me too. I've managed to get through to level 4, but it and 5 are major hurdles and gold-eaters right now. Not to mention the crazy costs of some Cache and Case ingredients, which is the main hurdle to me getting back into making them.
