Lunarian winters were usually beautiful, characterized by light snowfall and the occasional winter creature. Sometimes, though, there was rain—not just any rain, but that of the flash variety. It had caught the Imperial City off guard, and merchants and citizens alike were flocking under the eaves of nearby buildings. Van was among these Lunarians, swearing under her breath as she tried to cover the box she was holding. By the time she’d managed to get out of the rain, the papers were soaked, and she could see the ink seeping through the documents and into the sides of the cardboard box. They were useless now, which effectively doubled her work for the day. Needless to say, she was none too pleased about that.
Dropping the box with a scowl, she resisted the urge to kick the entire thing back out into the downpour. Littering was among the few things that were against her moral code, and there was always the risk of the documents falling into the wrong hands if she simply left them there. Instead, the woman settled for wringing her long hair out, watching with some disgust as the rainwater splashed onto the ground next to her. Then, she rubbed under her eyes in an attempt to get rid of some of the makeup that was sure to have run down her face.
She looked rather frightening, the way she seethed like a wet cat might. “What?” A few Lunarians nearby balked under her glare when she caught them staring, which only deepened the frown that marred her otherwise lovely features. Today had definitely not been the day to mess with the captain, and the weather had done just that.
Planting her hands on her hips, Van stared angrily out into the rain, as if doing so would somehow cause it to stop.

Contrary to popular opinion, Veryuu was actually rather fond of rain. Mind, he was fond of it within certain context, certain parameters to which the precipitation cycle ought abide. More specifically he was on far better terms with such a deluge when he was already inside, warm and possessed of reading material and a steaming cup of fresh-brewed tea, be it of his own concoction, or, as the case had been of late, that of his doting grandmother's. Ah, that he were within the confines of her kitchen just now, instead of running errands for his grandfather. Pulling layers of fabric tighter about him, he ran through the streets, head-ducked until he found a convenient dry spot wherein he could reassemble himself, grasping for some level of composure.
As fortune would have it, he found that he was not the only disheveled individual to choose this particular establishment as a haven, meager though it was, and he hadn't even noticed Van's presence clearly until he was half-way into a mirroring gesture, squeezing recalcitrant water droplets out of his silvery mane with a growl of displeasure. "It's going to take two days to dry in this humidity." A murmured grumble, picking at the edges of his drenched sleeves.
Glancing over then to his equally vexed fellow Lunarian, his lips twitched at the edges faintly with some imperceptible emotion; then he took a long, slow inhale in an attempt to gain some modicum of composure. "Pardon me. Do you at all mind if I share this space for the moment?" At least until the sky ceased to deposit its ceaseless affections upon the populace of the Imperial City.
There was but a flicker of his glance as he waited for her reply, manicured nails still fussing with his soaked robes in utter frustration, silent though it was...as he joined her in glaring simmering displeasure at the sudden outburst of weather. Equally displeasing was the now conjoined puddle forming between the two of them, proving that they'd both garnered a considerable amount of moisture before finding shelter.

Van was similar to Veryuu in his outlook on rain. A child of the rainforest, rain to Van used to mean being cozy inside, spending time playing games with her mother and brother, or curling up with a book. Since her promotion to fighter and captain ranks, though, the warm days spent inside were no more, replaced with mud runs and dirty slugfests and now: ruined paperwork. The captain did like the rain—she just didn’t like being in it, especially since the downpour no longer meant relief from her responsibilities. Now it only meant that her job would be even more difficult than it already was.
With all of her irritation focused on the rainfall, she hadn’t noticed when the other Lunarian joined her under the eaves. The way she was glowering at the precipitation, she doubted anyone would have wanted to approach her, so when a polite voice entered into the stream of her consciousness she was genuinely surprised. Swiveling towards the source of the question, her gaze locked on the boy standing next to her.
The captain’s glance shifted down in a quick once-over, taking in the similarly waterlogged state of his hair and robes. For a moment the scowl on her face softened and one corner of her mouth twitched, as if she found something funny about the way he was trying to squeeze the water out of his hair. Was that how she had looked?
Then, a more sympathetic part of her took over, and she shrugged, turning back to gaze out at the rain which was now coming down in sheets. “You’re fine,” she said. Her voice was a little gruff, but it was clear that the animosity was directed at the weather instead of the boy standing next to her. “I wouldn’t stay long if you dislike puddles, though.” Indeed, the pool of water under her had quickly expanded since he’d gotten there.
Scrubbing the back of her head, Van leaned to shift the box of damp papers in front of her that it wouldn’t get wetter. “Had much to do today?”
