Something about being watched intently by a crowd of people - a crowd, which included Nobles, no less - did not really sit well in Ran's stomach. The young Legion pressed a hand firmly to his tummy and felt kind of bad for himself; here he was, armed with his silly little training kama, against an opponent who obviously had more experience and masculinity than he.

And it was a woman.

Still, she was intimidating. Ran rolled his shoulders nervously and figured, while his family would laugh at him for losing to a woman in battle, it couldn't be all that bad. Given the circumstances. She looked tough. Or maybe he was just a weenie.

Barrage of negative thoughts aside, it was time to do something or be boo'd off stage. He figured he didn't have much of a chance - and this was probably going to hurt - but Ran had been in the academy for far too long. He had to get his butt in gear and prove himself. At this point, it wasn't even hasty of him.

"Well, here we go," Ran muttered under his breath; with a quick flick of the wrist, his kama was tucked neatly under his arm, ready to use the butt of it to disengage, if need be.

Nari was large, sporting a pixie cut that would have been cute on anyone but her. Her face was split in a fiendish grin as she eyed her opponent, a smaller boy who looked more and more unsure the longer she swung her nunchucks in anticipation of a fight that was sure to be a breeze.

When the gong struck, she trundled forward, not bothering with speed as showmanship. She was monstrous as it was, but the fight wasn't going to be won just by flexing. After executing a complicated set designed to confound the opponent, Nari finally lashed one arm out, bringing the end of the nunchuck to strike.

"Shoulda stayed home, kid."

He was gonna die.

That was the last though that ran through his head before the nun-chuck almost destroyed it. This was not a fight with the somewhat-short Yuudai, nor was this a skirmish with his weasels of brothers. Nay, this was clearly a battle to the death with a behemoth.

Ducking with the speed of a goose chasing the last piece of bread, Ran barely avoided getting his head smashed in; yet, he felt the tip nick his temple, and it stung. Bad. The impact surprised Ran and caused him to swivel a bit in place before catching himself, and his hand flew up to grasp at his hair as if it might ease the pain a bit.

"OW," he half-screamed, flashing Nari a bewildered look. Maybe she was trying to kill him! Maybe his parents would have to take his body back in a sack, maybe --

"Maybe stop talking to yourself and move move MOVE," Ran said with a rising pitch, backing rapidly away from the great, swinging arms of his opponent. She was definitely not bad with her nunchaku, but perhaps, if he used her size against her, he would stand a chance. Her movements were confusing, but he would either stand there and let her beat him to a pulp, or at least try something.

He decided - perhaps against his better judgement - to try something.

Drawing his shoulders up and squared, Ran pointed at Nari and shouted, "Hello, woman! Come and catch me if you want to beat me!" With that he gave a come-hither gesture with his hand and took a couple bounds back, kama at the ready. If he could exhaust her, maybe... well, he didn't really know. She didn't move too terribly fast, it seemed. Maybe he could find an advantage somewhere if he watched her carefully. He was not short, so hitting him would not be hard, but he was fast.

Just need an opening, he thought miserably. He was also beginning to question why he even entered this.

“Going somewhere?” Green eyes watched the boy as he danced backwards, amusement flickering in their depths. It was a futile movement, and a waste of energy—there was nowhere to go, nothing to hide behind. She could see him wherever he ran off to, and she’d be able to see when he tried to attack her with that blade on a stick. There wasn’t much more to it.

Shrugging when he summoned her, she lumbered toward him at a slightly faster pace just short of a jog. The nunchucks spun in her beefy hands, so rapidly that they looked like one stick. “You asked for it.”

Her arm snaked out once she closed in, the metal of her weapon directed this time at the boy’s hands. That thing he was holding looked like it would be painful if she didn’t get rid of it first.

It was disheartening to discover that she was not the stereotype he'd foolishly pegged her for - yes, she was large and scary, but she was not dumb. When she closed in on him with surprising speed, Ran was taken off-guard. He knew he had come into this battle ill-prepared, but this was just ridiculous. He cursed those long, muscular legs of hers as his kama was brutally knocked from his hand.

The poor weapon flew to the other side of the arena like it had been a paper clip. Pain shot through his hand - his knuckles! Damn, she had gotten them good - and he gritted his teeth, resisted the urge to swear up a storm.

Great. Now he had to figure out how to get it back without dying. Wide eyes turned up toward his opponent, who was surely already readying another attack. In a desperate effort, Ran leaped up and grasped for an end of her nunchaku. Common sense said to stay away from that thing, but he was in a pretty tight spot and was getting quite desperate.

Goddess, the crowd was getting quite a show out of this one. Ran attempted to yank the weapon from his opponent's hand, hoping his ridiculous action might surprise her enough to give him some leverage. The plan was to get it and maybe swing it around or something. Plans didn't usually go as he wanted, so Ran sucked in a breath and yanked with all his might, even using a leg to prop himself against her great torso as he did so.

"Let go, you beast!"

Nari didn’t even need to turn to know that the kama had been knocked far out of reach. She could tell simply by the desperation reflected in the eyes of her opponent, and oh, was it delicious.

“What the hell are you doing?” Blinking a few times to find that the boy had taken a hold of her weapon mid-spin, it was a small matter to just hold on to the nunchuck, her muscles pulling taut in their game of tug-o-war. “Seriously, this is your plan?”

Shaking her head in what could have been described as disbelief, she curled her free hand into a fist and swung hard at the boy, hoping to finally end the fight.

He'd done all he could, but it really had been a losing fight from the start. Ran had hoped to learn something from the experience, and he definitely did; one, that he was not that good of a fighter yet, and two, that he... well, he should never have underestimated his opponent. Especially not when they were easily twice his size.

When the great fist connected with his side, it was probably the worst pain Ran had ever been dealt. His first instinct was to gasp out a huge breath, which didn't seem to come. The wind had been knocked straight out of him; thankfully, it didn't seem that any bones would be broken. Not that he was even thinking about that right now. He wasn't even thinking, he just hurt.

His grip loosened immediately and he went limp. Vision blurred through tears, Ran tried to keep his balance, but it was too much. She had hit him right in the side, under his ribcage, so he wasn't going to die. It really felt like it, though.

Staggering back, Ran fell to his knees, clutching his side and gasping for a decent breath.

It was definitely over. Humiliatingly over.
