She was waiting.

Li hated waiting.

The woman had never been patient, but she wouldn't let her discontent do so much as slip through her amethyst eyes, standing perfectly upright at her end of the tourney mat, fingers deftly tugging the arm of her glove up beneath her shoulder. It had been too long since she'd seen battle -- the events she suffered with Huang had taken time to recover from, and above that, the chaos of the Emperor's death had afforded her little time to patrol -- and as much as she wouldn't admit it, she was itching for a good spar. Li didn't want to get rusty, especially given her promotion she'd received nearly a year ago; time was moving forward, so why wasn't she?

Her gaze flickered upwards as the gong-bearer arrived to signal the start of the match. She had no idea who her partner was and she didn't rightly care, either; if they were in the tournament, they must have thought they had some skill, and any skill at all would help her hone her own. Legion, Noble or scrapper -- everyone had something to prove. Maybe it was ideal that she pull for her alliance, but she'd never been the type to brand herself. Like hell she was going to start now.

The gong sounded, loud to her straining ears, but filled her with the thrum of excitement. Adrenaline already warming her, she didn't charge head in, but looked stoically at the other, putting her weight into the leg closest to her opponent. Li didn't have her weapon for this, but she didn't need it. She came from alley-brawls and contests just like this; for the brawler, the inherent need to survive with bare fists alone was natural enough.

The fighter's opponent was most certainly not unarmed. In fact, they wielded Sun & Moon rings, the metal glinting as they shifted into position and bowed to their opponent. Chuluun kicked dust up as he, in a display of force and skill, propelled himself off of the ground, flipped, and presented his sun and moon rings in a series of slicing motions, mimicking the rise of the sun and the exposure of the moon in a sort of combative dance he had invented.

It was quite possible Chuluun was all show, and no force. It would remain to be seen. At the very least, he would not keep his opponent waiting any longer: while it was likely a better idea to remain on the defensive until he had figured the woman's skill level and fighting style, the excitement of battle had already bitten Chuluun, and he was infected with its fever. Chuluun sprinted at his opponent, prepared: the blades could block, slice, and even trap limbs if he was fast enough.

But would he be?

"I taste the nectar of victory, and it sings within your blood!"

It was enough to make a seasoned fighter cringe, really, his display.

The Fighter simply gazed upon her opponent, her expression retaining most of its neutrality through the odd sort of dance that had been conjured. Li wouldn't sell him short on that, still giving him some benefit of the doubt; she'd seen fan dancers that could decimate almost any sword-wielder, so she was, at the very least, trying to be optimistic. That attempt became very difficult, however, when Chuluun was suddenly sprinting at her with abandon, setting off her internal alarms that he was battle hungry and maybe just a tiny bit green in the experience area.

And then he had to open his mouth.

Li's left eye twitched slightly along with the corner of her mouth, barely repressing her grimace. She never did understand why anyone felt the need to talk when in battle. Unless they had impressive stamina, it was just a waste of effort and concentration - and with the weapons he was wielding, she imagined he'd need a great deal of precision and attunement with the blades to sever anything stronger than a thread. She was hoping, given his bravado, that his precision was as biting as his words.

With her opponent at a full sprint, she waited until he was half way across the arena to her before she moved, and even then it was short and with consideration. Testing the waters of what she was up against, Li abruptly dropped to the ground and kicked out her leg at shin-height, her weight primarily focused on her fingertips that splayed evenly against the floor, preparing to throw her backwards or to the side. She sure as hell couldn't gauge which way he was going to respond, but if she could pull his feet out from under him, she'd deal with disarming him next.

Chuluun was definitely off-kilter, yes; he was far too excited to be in battle, and it was likely disappointing. He did, to his credit, manage to focus on reality long enough to dodge the kick-- sort of. What he ended up doing was nearly being caught off guard, leaping up over her foot to dodge midair, and then tumbling forward like an ungainly student-acrobat.

"A small matter! A mountain may tremble, but only time will gnaw its steady surface," Chuluun got out, as he pushed himself to the ground, cutting himself on his sun and moon rings as he tried to dust them off.

As ungainly as he was, however, he wasn't entirely stupid. Chuluun's next move aimed a little high to actually hit: he was not, in fact, trying to connect, but up to something unrelated.

She blanched again, watching the man take a tumble that was slightly less than graceful, but she didn't let it give her pause, using the momentum of her thrown-out leg to heave herself in that direction, keeping grounded by shifting her weight into her fingers, on all fours and pausing for mere heartbeats while Chuluun was rising. He appeared to have drawn first blood on his own weapons, the likes of which almost made her feel guilty, though she couldn't pinpoint why. She wanted to give him words of caution, but it seemed a little hypocritical, given that she was trying to beat him in a violent match.

He was clumsy and full of bravado, but Li didn't want to sell him short just yet. She had no idea what he could possibly hope to accomplish with his aim that was more likely to cut her ponytail than hit her, but she didn't miss a beat, using his obvious high reach to her advantage. With her point of balance being in her left hand, she again kicked her legs out, but upwards this time, both feet aimed towards his extended side and at an angle with intent to hit his ribs or beneath his arm if he kept moving, hoping to wind him wholly or dislocate his arm, whichever came first.

Chuluun realized, as he was swinging high, that his gamble had failed: he had not realized she would focus on her legs, somehow, so he'd misjudged her potential. He did, however, have a good sense of when he was going to get all living hell kicked out of him. "Fighting opponent, I fear I have misjudged your skill!" Chuluun explained, as he rolled out of the way of the blow.

He had to bail on everything he was doing, and it did clip him, but he managed to move out of the way so he wasn't winded or broken. That was it for him, though! "In the interest of my own health, and because I do not like pain, I am now going to bow out!"

Which he did, sort of: Chuluun did backflips, sun and moon rings glinting in the light, all the way out of the ring.

Spinning her strong legs back around to settle beneath her, Li slowly stood up, a perplexed expression on her face. Was it even considered a battle if only one of the fighters was struck -- and by their own weapon, no less? Watching Chuluun flipping and running and in constant motion the entire time - even out of the arena, without so much as a pause. The Fighter frowned a little, glancing to the score keeper just to make sure they were in the same boat as she was. At least she hadn't brought a weapon; it would have potentially been even quicker.

"Be -- careful -- !" she called out as Chuluun disappeared into the group of those watching and waiting, grimacing again and rubbing the back of her neck. She hardly felt like she'd even warmed up! With a slow shake of her head and a polite bow of head to the judges, she made her way out, unscathed and still ready to spar.
