Van stood still as she waited for her opponent to ready himself. Violet eyes watched, amused, as the lanky boy did a few jumping jacks and punched the air a few times—not that it would make a difference in this fight. Against the Legion captain he was surely outclassed. She was certain that she could take him with one hand tied behind her back, but decided that that was too much of an insult, so she decided not to draw her swords.

Perhaps it wasn’t fair that the difference in skill was so great for the beginning match, but that was the luck of the draw, and it was much more efficient than, say, a round-robin style tournament. Van could just as easily run into a front-lines captain from her very own faction in the next match, and then where would she be? Better to take the opportunity to deliver a swift beatdown now, than be embarrassed in the next match without a chance to show any skill.

She knew the Nobles were watching. It was the perfect way to show just how superior the Emperor’s forces were. As the referee struck the gong, she broke into a run, her fingers arched in the half-fist of her signature leopard style.

He had been so excited to hear that his opponent was a woman, and that she stood an entire head shorter than him, at that. He didn’t recognize the official-looking gear she was clothed in, but here, it wasn’t important. The boy grinned, trying to show her that she wasn’t scary to him, though his smile faded a notch when she closed the distance between them in an instant, like a tiger would.

He rolled his shoulder backwards, avoiding the first strike, and the cocky smirk returned to his face. Swinging one leg out, trying to sweep her legs out from under her, he said, “What’s a lady like you doing in a man’s competition?”

When the boy rolled his shoulder back, Van realized she probably had to give him a little more credit. He wasn’t some civilian after all, or at least he had enough fighting experience to know the very basics of boxing. Still, whatever he could have boasted couldn’t be as complete as her martial arts education. He simply didn’t look the part, his form bony and malnourished rather than muscular like so many involved in the war.

For a moment she felt sympathetic, even as she jumped out of the way of his leg’s reach. He probably truly needed the prize pot in the competition, whereas she was simply fighting for the fun of it. Any thoughts she had of going easy on him disappeared, though, as soon as he opened his mouth.

“Seems like you shouldn’t be here, then,” she retorted back at him, her face drawn in a frown. Screw going easy—it wasn’t as if anyone after him would be showing him the same mercy, anyway.

Lunging in again, she forsook any compassion her heart possessed and became a predator. The only thing that mattered now was the win. Her next attack was a dual attempt on both his left elbow and knee. Smiling coldly as she bore down on him, she reached out with both hands bent into a leopard’s claw.

He grinned again at her retort, amused that he had managed to anger her. Earlier, he’d had the feeling that she hadn’t been all-in in the fight, considering she didn’t even bother warming up. A moment later, though, his amusement immediately turned into regret. He blocked the attempt on his knee easily enough, but there was nothing he could do about the way she snapped his elbow back.

Howling in pain as he fell backwards, his left arm dangling uselessly, the man managed to come to a halt and tumble foward, his good arm raised in a fist aimed right at her head. “You b***h!”

The captain surprised even herself with a laugh as the man’s disposition changed from one extreme to the other. When had she learned to take so much delight in breaking bones and causing pain? The answer, for now, was irrelevant. Rage had dulled whatever control and finesse he had, it seemed, so ducking out of the way of his fist was easy.

Van stuck her foot out as she passed him, using the very same, crude movement that he’d tried on her earlier to attempt a trip. It wasn’t something that would have worked on any trained fighter, but it was painfully evident now that her opponent was no such thing.

Turning around to inspect her work, it was her turn to smile down in satisfaction. “Take a good look, darling, ‘cause it’s the last you’ll ever get.”

She considered attacking him again without giving him a chance to compose himself, but eventually decided against it. It was poor sportsmanship, not that her opponent seemed to have any. In a fight for her life, she might not have afforded him such a courtesy, and sometimes people died in these tournaments. Today, though, she detected no threat on her life, especially not in this match.

Missing her completely only made him angrier, and all he could do was shout obscenities as he fell to the same move that had failed on her. Even now that he had a gratuitous view of her panties, he was too pissed to appreciate such a thing—as if he found her at all attractive at this point anyway.

Still, he was damned if he stayed down now. Bracing himself up with his good arm, he stumbled to his feet and towards the woman, shouting a war cry. He didn’t know exactly what he was going to pull, but at least he could say he never gave up.

For all that she’d dismissed her opponent after the first few seconds of their fight, Van was impressed enough to unfold her arms as the man fought to get up from his prone position on the ground. Even though there was still no difference in his actual fighting ability, that he tried earned him back a little bit of respect from her.

There was a fine line between effort and stupidity, however, and it probably would have been a smarter idea for him to stay down. Light on her feet as always, she bounded at him the moment his muscles twitched.

Hooking his wrist in her hand as she passed, she twisted his arm behind him, kicking out his knees once she’d executed the lock. Dragging his wrist up higher behind his back, she pushed him face-forward into the dirt of the ring, so that he could no longer stand up. Her face remained impassive even as the referee whistled to signify the match’s end.

Letting go then, the woman clasped her hands behind her back. “You’d do well not to piss off a captain of the Legion, next time.” With that, she turned on her heel and strode out of the ring.
