In the little cottage by the sea, untouched by the marks of war, dusted with sand from the beach that swept up onto its little wooden front porch, a man lay asleep in the upper bedroom. Curled on his side, his dark hair falling in waves over his bare shoulders, a long, scaled tail twisted around one of his legs, his legs, which were clad in a simple pair of grey pants.
Qian Jianyu was, and had been for the better part of the night and part of the morning, fast asleep. It had not come easily; the day before had been spent training new recruits for the Legionnaires, and most of them had been hot headed, brash, too loose with their tongues and quick to lash out. It was easy to see where it had come from; their spirited personalities had only been driven farther by recent events, and it was not as if he could blame them (they were only teenagers, after all, hardly out of their youth).
Still, it had taken a certain amount of patience and hard work to get them even remotely under control. And after that, instead of having dinner with his wife as he had hoped to, Jianyu had been sent on a reconnaissance mission in the North to recover some lost scrolls. He had not gotten home until the moon was high up in the sky, and Yue Lao had already been asleep for several hours. It had made him somewhat disappointed; not in Yue, but in himself, for lately it had seemed as though they kept missing each other. Yue was busy with her own duties, and with the tattoo business and his work with the Legion, Jianyu oftentimes felt stretched too thin. There were days when all he and Yue saw of each other was a brief moment at morning and night when they kissed each other hello and goodbye. It was disheartening; in all reality, they were still considered newlyweds, yet they had not had time to properly act as such.
It was really very vexing. And so exhausted and drained, Jianyu had silently crawled into bed beside her, pressed a kiss to her sleeping face, wrapped his arm around her waist, and promptly fallen asleep.
Now it was late morning - almost afternoon, and Jianyu had still not awoken yet.

It was true, her duties kept her apart from the one she loved; it could not last forever, could it? Although she had never been the peaceful type, sometimes Yue Lao found herself tiring of combat, tiring of the repetitive training drills and the endless studying: tactics upon tactics. Being new had been so much easier than these new responsibilities. And, naturally, since her husband was even higher in rank his duties were no less strenuous. Despite that, Yue Lao could close her eyes every night tugging on that invisible red thread she felt he had tied around her that first night. A night such as this one, when her husband was kept late again while she caught up mercifully on much-needed sleep.
Her dreams that night were peppered with visions of her best friend-turned husband's face, walking through corridors of memory that had helped change her heart for all time. Perhaps it was because they'd been apart for too much time lately, or perhaps it was just the byproduct of falling asleep missing him, her fingers tangled around the covers as she pretended her husband slept beside her; one way or another, she kept hearing his voice in her sleep, and occasionally her own voice would answer.
━━━━━━━ "I do not need 'cheering up,' no." he said, slightly bemused by the young woman's way of speaking. She seemed to take pleasure in not making her meaning clear. "And with regard to your 'friends,' are you speaking of your breasts, or whatever it is that you are holding behind your back? Rather, if whatever it is that is behind your back is ale or something to the like, I would much prefer that to your breasts." ━━━━━━━
The very first thing Jianyu had ever said to her, really. If she had been awake, or remotely lucid, Yue Lao might have laughed until it hurt: she could never have predicted what would happen. Especially since Yue Lao did not fall in love. That was not something for Yue Laos, not even remotely. Striking someone's flesh so precisely that they felt it to the bone, sweeping their feet out from under them with a single strike of one leg, snagging them with her monkey fist (or, in those days, smacking herself in the face) was more natural to the young Lunarian. And somehow their nights out had burrowed into her heart and blossomed there. Speaking of blossoms, her last dream before she woke was filled with the scent of blossoms, and her skin covered in the softness of falling petals: a tree that stood there no longer.
━━━━━━━ "Yue Lao," Jianyu said. His heartbeat was so loud he thought it might be audible to everyone and anyone around him. "Will you marry me?" ━━━━━━━
Not even a trace of warning, as far as she was concerned. She'd worked for months just to bury the love she thought she could never have, so that it didn't hurt her every day, didn't make her lash out, didn't keep her from her full potential in combat. And then, suddenly, that necessity disappeared before her eyes.
━━━━━━━ She took deep, even breaths, trying to steady herself. "I loved you all this time," she said, "and I thought you would never return the feeling. I fought it, I mourned it, I eventually accepted it-- and now all of that struggle... was unnecessary?" Yue Lao took a deep breath and puffed her cheeks out, her brows furrowed. ━━━━━━━
It hadn't been the most graceful response to a proposal, admittedly. Probably the least graceful, really. It wasn't as if she'd exactly had any warning, or prepared a reply in advance, or had any inkling that it could ever happen to her. Also she wasn't tactful to begin with; she was never collected, calm, cool like her husband. Perhaps that was one part of what made them a good team. A great team. But Yue Lao didn't think of her husband so detachedly; she'd seen the depths of his passion, and knew what greatness her Jianyu was capable of. It made her proud of him. It brought out the strength in her, and all of the fight: she knew that she could blaze as brightly as she wanted, and never worry about outshining him. In fact, she seemed to be forever trying to just catch up, but it was fun. It was fun to love someone who challenged her. It was especially convenient to be of the same allegiance: every drop of blood they shed, every ounce of energy poured into the training sessions and the late nights out and the early morning rising meant that they were that much closer to their goals.
━━━━━━━ "Relax," he said in a low voice against her ear as they stood just outside of Yue's home. "I am not going anywhere; there is no need to hold on so tightly, love." ━━━━━━━
Love. Yeah, that was right. Yue Lao stirred in her sleep, thought she felt a kiss press against her cheek, a smile slipping across her face. She fell back into the grip of dreams immediately after, however, and had little opportunity to react. She naturally oriented herself to be closer to her husband as he climbed into bed, though. It was habit. Even in sleep, her body curved to be nearer.
━━━━━━━ Getting married. Huh. It's a lot to live up to. It's a lot to think about. But there is no part of me that feels regret. All I want is to see Jianyu again, and again, and every day of my life. ━━━━━━━
She had written that once, before their wedding, and looking at her husband now she still felt it. More than ever. Even if they had to sacrifice so much of their precious time to their alliance, surely they would be together more soon? They would have to be. Maybe sometime she would have a bit of a vacation. The thought would have made her laugh, had she been awake.
Which she promptly was, because Hime-san had quite enough of her sleeping in. The monkey, whose fur was immaculately groomed as per usual, wanted fresh fruit prepared for him and he wanted it prepared now. Jianyu was still fast asleep when she woke to bits of Mr. Princess' golden fur tickling the inside of her nose. She clamped a hand over her own mouth to prevent yelping at the golden lion tamarin, but her eyes narrowed and she glared. "I was having such nice dreams, I should just let you starve," she muttered darkly, quietly, as she acknowledged the monkey to get him to dislodge himself and head downstairs. She peered over at her husband briefly, sighing and smiling: "Hey, fierce warrior, you look even more handsome while you sleep, did you know that?" she whispered. Gently, Yue Lao leaned over and brushed a lock of hair away from his face, then kissed his forehead, before slipping out of bed in just her wrappings and loose pants.
She redid the wrappings fresh and wandered downstairs to cut up some fruit and put it in a dish for the monkey. "Well, since my husband is still asleep, want to go on a breakfast date on the beach, terrible horrible monster?" The monkey chittered, grabbed the dish and dashed off somewhere with it. Yue Lao scowled at the monkey. Looks like she'd spend the morning working through her combat routines alone on the beach again, before considering a swim, and eventually making her way back to their home. She kept an anxious eye on it all day. Maybe she and her husband could finally have some time together?... Without a monkey. And without trainees. Sweet emperor, without trainees.
The second she'd run through all her exercises and stretches, finished her swim and dried off in their room, Yue Lao wandered around their home in a clean robe, preparing lunch. A very hearty lunch for a very sleepy husband, apparently. Okay, admittedly some of it was a little ... crispy, but at least her skills had improved. Sort of. Mostly? Some of it was bound to taste good.
One could not ruin fresh fruit, after all. Could they? Well it was good enough for the monkey! She brought it all upstairs, dish by dish, set it on a blanket as though it was a picnic, and sat on the side of the bed. "If you don't wake up, soon, I'm going to think you've got a deadly illness again," Yue threatened, teasing, her voice soft and low still. She stroked her fingers across her husband's cheek, as carefully as possible. If he needed to sleep, he needed to sleep. But she was certainly not about to leave the room.

Where Yue was dreaming of him, Jianyu was - thankfully - dreaming of her as well. It was more pleasant than his usual nighttime thoughts, which as of late had been filled with nothing but schematics and plans and missions and training and fighting. He ate, slept, and dreamed of his work; unintentionally, of course, but his everyday life had seemed to start seeping into his sleeping life as well, a fact that irritated him greatly and only served to make him more exhausted in the morning. It took enough effort to think about that sort of thing during the day, and he did not need it in his dreams as well.
Which was why this particular sleep was much better than he had had in weeks, perhaps months. Dreaming of Yue was restful; it made his heart at peace, and his mind settle, free from the constraints of working so hard. His dreams were not as clear as hers; when he woke up later, he would only remember vague snatches, hazy visions of what had kept him so calm, but the feelings of warmth would remain.
Jianyu did not know how soundly, nor how long he had been sleeping until he felt fingers on his cheek, heard a familiar voice that sounded as though it were from far away. He stirred beneath the covers, eyes fluttering as he shifted (it was really not that easy to sleep with the damned horns protruding from the top of his head, though he had gotten mostly used to them by now and had figured out how exactly to go about lying down with them), the blanket slipping down his bare chest and settling at his waist.
"...Yue?" he mumbled, in a voice still heavy with sleep. Jianyu rolled over, blinking blearily into the bright sunlight and caught sight of thick magenta hair and a smile. The scent of something spicy caught his sense, which mixed oddly with the familiar and comforting floral scent that accompanied his wife.
Waking up next to her would always be one of the greatest pleasures of his life, a pleasure that lately he had not had time to enjoy. He did not take for granted his marriage; he knew that while the proposal had seemed spontaneous, falling in love with Yue Lao had not. It had taken him a long time to get to where he was now, and though it had not always been easy, there had not been a single moment where he had regretted what he had done or where he was now.
"Yue," said Jianyu again, and smiled sleepily up at her, reaching out to cover her hand where she was touching his face. He wrapped his own around hers and brought her fingertips to his lips, pressing a kiss to them before he let go. Sitting up slowly, his body stiff and aching, Jianyu glanced down at the dishes around the blanket as he rubbed his blind eye as his hair fell down about his shoulders and back.
He blinked. "What's all this?" he said, and then smiled. "Is this for us?"
Maybe today he would actually be able to spend some quality time with his wife, though that was doubtful. With the two of them being as busy as they were, it was hard to get more than five moments together, let alone an entire day. Still, Jianyu couldn't help but hope that maybe, just maybe, things would work in their favor for once.
"What time is it? How long did I sleep?"

Her heart leapt into her throat when her husband pressed a kiss to her fingertips, the same way it always seemed to whenever Jianyu touched her. It was an interesting internal struggle, occasionally, to keep thoughts about weak points and bone strikes out of her mind lately: not because she would ever want to harm her husband, but because like him so much of her waking time was occupied by her responsibilities. Thankfully, however, since her rank was lower, she wasn't quite as plagued by the thoughts as her husband. Not that she was thankful he was so submersed in it, but at least one of them could remain a little more grounded. Although she had always been a little less grounded than him, so perhaps it just set them on an even playing field, as far as she was concerned.
She tried to look serious, and tapped a finger on her cheek, as if pondering: "This is our celebration meal," she began, "for you have been asleep many moons, and we have finally been victorious in war! There will be peace throughout the land, and..." Yue Lao paused, a smile broke out across her face and she couldn't sustain her serious tone. "Now I'm not sure what I'm going to do with myself, but on the bright side, maybe my cooking will improve. I have also been training Hime-san to fish and not screech at me when he wants sliced bananas."
"You've slept into the afternoon, love-- how late did you get home? You know what, I don't think I want to know," she admitted, the corner of her mouth quirking up. "I had a good dream," she added. Then paused. "I think. I can't remember most of it. Oh, right, we should get to eat before it actually does become too cold, or dry, or whatever each respective dish becomes with time."
Maybe it would be nice if there was peace. She didn't really know what it would be like; this life was all she'd ever known. Yue Lao reached one hand out and stroked her fingers through some of his hair where it had slipped against his back and shoulders. "You know what, that and we should eat before they're in dire need of one of us."

Five minutes alone with Yue was not nearly long enough, but if they could somehow manage just that, Jianyu would be satisfied, all things considered. When he'd mentioned his frustrations to his mother a few weeks ago about the lack of rest they'd both been having, Ehuang had gently reminded her son that the first year of marriage was always the hardest, and that it wasn't unusual to feel a little frustration every now and then, but really he'd better get it together and find time to spend with his wife, because how else were they going to give her grandchildren if they never spent any time together.
"Oh, I see," said Jianyu in mock seriousness, nodding as he lifted a hand and stroked his chin thoughtfully. "So by this time, you're an old maid and I must be an ancient - "
But Yue was giggling, and the sound was delightful, as was the smile, and Jianyu could not help but return it with one of his own. He glanced down at the food on the bed and reached out, picking up a pair of chopsticks to carefully nudge at something that looked as though it might be fish of some sort.
"It looks delicious," said Jianyu sincerely, and then gave a snort. "And tell Hime-san that he can have his bananas if he catches us more fish."
So he'd slept for a long time. Jianyu put a bite of food in his mouth, absently chewing on it. He hadn't meant to sleep as late as he had, but somehow he felt much more well-rested than he usually did, much more at ease, minus the stiffness of his body, due to the intensity of his training as of late. Swallowing, he said "I had pleasant dreams as well. They might have been about you, but I'm not sure. I hope so, because then I can say that dreaming of you makes me sleep better."
Yue's hands were gentle in his hair. Jianyu lowered his chopsticks and turned his head to smile at her, a soft expression on his face.
"Seems we can never catch a break, can we dearheart?" he said, and then leaned in close, his face hardly an inch away from hers as though he were going to kiss her...
...but then he grinned and pecked her on the cheek instead.
"My breath probably smells quite awful right now, otherwise I'd kiss you more properly."

Yue Lao was fond of Jianyu's family, in its large and energetic entirety; she could hardly imagine what kind of havoc grandchildren would wreak on everyone's lives, however. Not that she didn't consider it. It was hard not to, and usually when it was suggested she'd laugh and say it was hard to find battle-ready preggers armour that she could still fight in. Or something. With the twins in Jianyu's bloodline, she sometimes also wondered if they'd end up with two little monsters at once. At the moment, she wasn't thinking of any of this exactly, just laughing at Jianyu's suggestion. She got a teasing glint in her eye and replied, "We haven't aged a day... my love for you has kept us youthful forever!"
If only it worked that way! Growing old looked painful, though Yowai and Chichi had done so more or less gracefully. Her smile broadened as he said it looked wonderful. Hey, she'd take the compliment, and she was not gonna let it go! It wasn't often she got to make anything for him in the first place, unless it was leftovers, and those hardly counted. Okay, admittedly she hardly ever ate anyone's home cooking at all, much less hers. More like grab something on the go and run out the door, or never even come home for the night. It wasn't much fun to sleep in the barracks, and bed rolls were unbelievably uncomfortable, but along with the responsibility she'd tried to skirt for most of her life came certain somatic sacrifices.
"Really? I don't terrorize you in your sleep? I guess I'm not doing this right!" Yue winked at him, and tilted her head to regard him as he smiled at her softly. She laughed, at first, but as he leaned close to kiss her the devil-may-care grin turned into a half-lidded, heart-pounding anticipation and--
he kissed her cheek? Yue let out a frustrated protest, wrinkled her nose and smacked him lightly on the back of the hand. "It's not like you smell like roses after training, either! But I kiss you then!"
"Excuse me while I sulk now," she added, kissing him fiercely on the cheek, as if trying to attack his face with her face. Affectionately. Definitely affectionately.

"If your love is what has kept us young, then by all means, keep loving," said Jianyu with amusement, his eyes twinkling as he looked over at Yue. "We'd stay young for centuries, in that case."
The age difference between he and Yue notwithstanding, the fact that he was only four years away from turning thirty was somewhat wearisome to him. Thirty was hardly old, but Jianyu was, if nothing else, concerned about his own physical well-being and capabilities. Though to be perfectly honest, his own father had continued on fighting until his early forties, so perhaps he was worrying over something silly and inconsequential.
Yes, that was it.
"You're free to terrorize me anytime in my sleep," said Jianyu innocently, and then laughed at her indignant expression, his tail sliding along the ground to curl around one of Yue's ankles. Her lips felt warm and ticklish on his cheek, her hair brushing against his face.
"So we're in agreement then," said Jianyu. "We neither of us smell particularly good right now."
Smirking, he twisted his head and abruptly captured her lips with his own, smiling against them mischievously.
"What say we both take the day off?"

Yue Lao nodded, her smile as wide as she thought it could possibly go. "I don't think I ever had another choice," she retorted, shaking her head slowly, eyes shut as she focused on the way her husband sounded, felt, smelled-- it had been far too long. Even if he had morning breath, she would never be sick of remembering all of these things. Well, hopefully never. After all, she knew that marriage wasn't supposed to forever be so full of devotion, but the way that she was it seemed like she couldn't be any other way.
She seldom remembered their age difference, focusing instead on their difference in rank. He looked as handsome as the day she'd met him, and it wasn't as if he was out of shape-- the sheer notion of undressing him made her face flush. She cleared her throat, casting her eyes downwards, an evil glint in her eyes as she failed to really not imagine it. "Oh? I'll take you up on that the next time you sleep in, then. We'll see how else I can wake you up, so long as you promise not to break any of my bones," Yue replied. Although she did have battle-honed reflexes, she wasn't exactly about to bargain on whether or not she could catch him before he broke her nose.
The touch of his tail had startled her before, when all of the changes had first occurred, but now she had grown used to it. She slipped one hand down to stroke his tail gently, idly, the side of her hand which was not calloused brushing along its length. Although she wielded her meteor hammer, she often wore protective gloves, so her hands remained much softer than they should have been.
"Hey now, I was in the ocean after! Do I really smell that bad?" Yue Lao wrinkled her nose in protest, and then sighed heavily, as if conceding defeat. "We will just have to go for another swim, perhaps," she suggested, teasing.
Until he suggested that they both take the day off, following a kiss that shut her up again: her whole body sank towards his, lips parting for his instantly. All the muscles she'd tensed unknowingly relaxed, and it was with marked reluctance that she didn't continue kissing him again and again this time.
"We can do that?" she asked, partially amazed, partially teasing. "...I can think of nothing that I would like more than to let the world sort itself out while we enjoy a day off," she added, quickly, shifting so that she could be closer to him.
"Now that is settled... Anything in mind, dear husband? For our glorious day off?"

"Of course you had a choice," said Jianyu, in a very matter of fact tone of voice. "You could have gone off and married some giant ogre with buckteeth who smells like tobacco. Thankfully, however, you settled for the strange person who sits beside you."
Grinning, he winked at Yue and then lifted his brow, the grin slipping into a coy smile. "No, you smell divine," he said, and as if to prove this point, he leaned forward and buried his face in Yue's neck, inhaling deeply. She smelled of saltwater and flowers, and Jianyu laughed, snaking his arms around her waist and linking his fingers together at her back. He had missed this; missed it a great deal.
Jianyu leaned back, eyeing Yue. "I can think of a few things we could do," he said, a devilish glint to his eyes, and yanked Yue forward into his lap, crushing his mouth to hers in a fervent kiss, grinning against her lips.
After several moments of deliberately stealing Yue's air from her, he let her go, smiling broadly, his hands resting a bit lower than they had been a moment before. Smirking, Jianyu ducked his head, kissed her collarbone and said, "I think we should go swimming."
He bounced a little on the bed, almost like an excited little boy who wanted to play with his new toys. "We live right next to the ocean and have yet to actually go swimming in it. I say we take today off and actually go spend some time in the ocean. It's calling to us; can't you hear it?"

In an equally matter of fact tone, parroting him a bit, Yue Lao added: "I did not have a choice because I am stubborn and apparently when you lay siege to my heart they just open the doors and say: oh, it's you! We've been waiting for you, come right in!" Yue Lao mimed it with her fingers, playing both parts, making the door attendant sound fairly ridiculous. Once her little story was done, she snorted and added: "If you were a giant ogre with buckteeth that smelled of tobacco then that is EXACTLY what I would have done. I'm grateful every day you're so incredibly attractive. And strange. Grateful for both, really."
It was very difficult to joke around when his face was buried against her neck, and his hands linked behind her back. Everywhere he touched, as per usual, her skin grew warm. It was very very difficult to focus on anything else, or even form words. "Oh?..." she prompted, after a pause, trying to figure out how to respond without blurting out something extremely telling. She didn't have to worry about that much longer, as she was yanked into his lap, and she pressed her mouth against his eagerly, the tip of her tongue tasting him lightly before she focused more on the fact she was in his lap, her legs moving so that they wrapped around his torso.
The kisses were wonderful. She would like all of them. More of them, even. More of them beyond all of them! But he did stop, eventually, which was probably good given she was starting to get a little dizzy from excitement and lack of oxygen. But she was still sad. She tilted her head back to allow easier access to her collarbone. "Swimming?" she began. She could sort of swim now, thanks to that fight with Bataar teaching her what she really should know.
But for Jianyu, and with that adorable excited bounce, she would certainly try. As if he'd never gotten to laugh at her being stupid before, anyway! "I can, in fact, definitely hear the call..." Yue tilted her head, slipped one hand away to cup around her ear. "It's singing swiiiim in me, your wife is going to be very scantily claaad."
Yue Lao grinned broadly and winked at her husband, before looking at the dishes she'd set up. "I bet I can clear this away in... two minutes!" It was as if she was setting a challenge for herself, and she fully planned on doing that. It could get chaotic. And dangerous.

"You," said Jianyu. "are very silly. And adorable."
As if to show Yue just how adorable she actually was, he kissed her again, his hands slipping down her back to rest on her upper legs, massaging lightly. They were back to acting like starstruck teenagers once again, hardly able to keep themselves in control, but it had been so long since they'd had more than just brief kisses that it was difficult to care at the current moment.
"Yes," said Jianyu, in a very matter-of-fact tone of voice as he kissed Yue's collarbone again, moving up her throat to peck playfully at her jaw and chin. "Swimming. You know, that thing you do when you go into the ocean and you move around and you breathe in all that salty water and it's wonderfully liberating and fun?"
He leaned back and smiled, though it was almost a little bittersweet, his hands resting against her lower back again. "I feel like we hardly ever get to see each other anymore. We're both so busy - you've got your training and everything, and I've got my duties, and well...when was the last time we just got a chance to relax?"
The scantily-clad comment made him smirk, and his hands slipped purposefully lower, deliberately squeezing a little. "Sounds like a plan, as long as no one but myself gets to see you in such clothing."
Jianyu glanced sideways at the dishes, then back up at Yue, waggling his eyebrows. "Is that a challenge?" he asked, and then grinned devilishly. He leaned forward, his lips barely an inch away from Yue's.
"Race you."
He opened his mouth as if to kiss her, his breath ghosting over hers -
- and then pushed her back onto the bed and bolted, disappearing out the door and down the stairs, his laughter echoing throughout the little house.
"Catch me if you can!"

At least he still found her adorable, that was pretty excellent in Yue's opinion-- though it was also a little strange, somewhere in the back of her mind, to actually know that he found her cute. After all, she'd spent most of her youth being flamboyant and slightly irritating to just about everyone. Even when they met, she'd probably come across a little... strong.
And it was true, it was pretty difficult not to want her husband, but she was pretty sure there wasn't a single Lunarian alive or dead who could blame her for it. The corenr of her mouth tilted up into a grin as he kissed her jaw, her chin, and teased her about swimming. "Oh! Thank you, wise master, I had never heard of this... swimming before! I love salty water! I love moving! I even love breathing!"
She feigned stupidity, widening her normally pleased half-shut eyes. Her smile matched his in a moment, tinged with sadness, but persistent in that she refused to let it spoil her mood: "Yeah... I'm not sure, doesn't help that I've gotta be on the front lines; no paperwork for me!" she tried to joke about it, but her expression betrayed how much she wished they could have had a longer honeymoon maybe, or just... more time. But she always wanted more time with him. "We just have to steal days off like this now and again, I think," she added, her voice softer, leaning into him not in a suggestive way but rather a loving and gentle one.
Just for a moment. And then she was back to craving him, especially when his hands slipped lower, squeezed. She took a moment to suck in a breath, and then laughed again. "No one but you has ever seen me scantily clad, and now no one ever will," she said. For all her being flirtatious, she'd never started anything with anyone. Yue Lao was not really made for relationships-- at least, she hadn't thought she was. Jianyu had proved her very, very wrong. And it was a good thing.
Yue just grinned in response to his asking if it was a challenge, and she raised her brows. "It's on," she agreed, distracted by his lips so close to hers, his breath, the warmth: and then he pushed and ran away. "I fall for that every time! Emperor damn it all! I have to-- agh!" Yue grabbed all the dishes, suspending them strangely, using some discarded linen to carry them all down without breaking anything. She quickly pushed whatever needed preserving into its respective place, cleaned as fast as she could, stared at the dirty dishes... and then said: "I'll do those later."
Before bolting out the door and shedding clothing as she ran, sprinting towards her husband, "How fast can you possibly run with your huge tail!" Yue Lao yelled after him, laughing madly, down to her wrappings: just like when she was a fighter.

He supposed he could have been nicer, but there was just something about teasing Yue Lao that gave him great pleasure. Not to mention that she was just the type of person who could take the kind of teasing Jianyu gave out - and gave it right back. It was probably why they had become such close friends so fast; and why it was inevitable that they had become so much more in the end. There had been a time when Jianyu had not even remembered how it had been to smile, to simply relax and to let himself go, remember that every day given to him was something to be celebrated. Life had taken its toll on him too early; he hadn't ever given himself a chance to embrace it.
But now he could, because being with Yue made him remember what it was like to live. And although his life had not turned out the way he had wanted it to, or how he had thought it would, he would not have traded what he had now for anything else in the entire world.
He heard her voice behind him, his tail whipping through the sand, and Jianyu laughed, the sound carried on the wind back to Yue Lao.
"Faster than you can!" he called back teasingly, and kept running, leaping over a fallen log and landing nimbly in the damp, wet sand just beyond. Their little cottage was far enough away from the water to prevent it being damaged in the high tides, but close enough that it hardly took anytime to reach the ocean. Within minutes Jianyu could feel the water on his bare feet, and he laughed again, spinning around to see where his wife had gotten to.
"Still haven't found me yet!" he shouted, and smirked, darting along the edge of the water. The sea sifted up the sand, spraying droplets onto him, and the fact that he wasn't at work or in training or doing anything related to the war made him yell with happiness, with a sense of complete and utter freedom that he had not experienced in a very long time.
"Come and get me, Stargazer!"

Yue would never expect her husband to be, Emperor forbid, nicer to her! Not when it came to teasing; Yue loved teasing her husband, and she loved it just as much when he teased her. They were a perfect team; Jianyu's influence had matured her, significantly. Before him, she'd been selfish, impatient, and even more loud-mouthed than she already was. She hadn't cared about anyone but herself. Which was why it'd been so hard for her to fall in love in the first place, because she could hardly figure out how to be selfish and in love at the same time.
And she still got to be herself. She just got to be the best parts of herself, the ones that had survived through years of youth and angst. Yue Lao's one goal had always been to train, to improve, to succeed, and she had gotten that and so much more. "You got a head start! Faster your celestial a**!" Yue hollered back, laughing wildly. "I will call my warrior-monkey on you, oh dear husband! Don't think that I won't!"
She was sprinting, as fast as she could, her feet kicking up substrate as she ran. She listened to his laughing, and tried to hunt him down. He couldn't be that far! In fact, she attempted to hide and then race after him, but suspected her subterfuge would be lost entirely, especially with her wealth of magenta hair and her sprinting across the exposed sand to leap at her dear husband.
"GOTCHA, Fierce warrior!" she exclaimed, between bursts of laughter, leaping at her husband to tackle him into the water. Or just tackle him. One way or another, Yue Lao was excited, thrilled, liberated. Yue Lao felt very alive.
