Stove TopThe stove top is the part on top of the oven, where all the circles are, like
this.
There are two main kinds of stove: Gas and electric. A gas stove will create a small fire on top, and an electric stove will simply heat up the surface of the stove or the coils on the stove.
The only real difference between using a gas stove or an electric stove is how long it takes to achieve the heat you want. A gas stove will light up right away, but an electric stove takes a few seconds to a minute to heat up. (In my experience, it has never been a full minute, but maybe around twenty seconds.)
It is always important to make sure that there is
nothing on the stove except what you want to cook. I have a bad habit of tossing mail or other things on top of the stove, and that could lead to a fire hazard if I forgot to remove those items before turning the stove on.
The stove will have knobs either directly above the circles (where the clock and timer would be) or directly below the circles (so right above the oven door). There will usually be a small image to indicate which circle the knob will turn on, so pay attention that you turn on the correct one.
You can adjust the heat of the fire/electricty by turning the knob associated with the circle you're using. Turning the knob clockwise will turn the heat up, and turning the knob counter-clockwise will turn the heat down.
Many recipes will tell you to use "low heat." On those recipes, turn the knob as far down as you can without shutting the stove off.
There are stoves that are attached to an oven and stoves that are not attached to an oven, so you can get whatever will suit your needs.
