Versus debating is a specialized area of debating in which we compare two or more characters to determine who would win in a fight.
This is done in several ways:
1. Abilities: The character's powers, skills, and equipment are taken into account, and a conclusion is reached based on their function.
Example:
Superman can use his heat vision to turn Sandman to glass and beat him.
2. Feats. This is where you take examples of deeds the characters have performed, and judge their power based on that.
Example:
Odin destroyed galaxies in his fight with Seth, therefore he is powerful enough to beat the Silver Surfer, who has never demonstrated that kind of power.
3. Calculations. This one is a little more complicated. Basically, you use math and science to determine hard numbers and compare them.
Example: Analysis of the debris of the planet Alderaan exploding reveals the Death Star has a firepower of some 1e38j. A Xeelee nightfighter once survived a magnetar eruption, which has an energy of some 1e40j. Therefore the nightfighter could survive a Death Star blast.
(this example is truncated for convienence, in real debate the actual calculations would be provided as to how those figures were arrived at).
Using these three techniques in debate (and providing evidence to support your claims) will help debates proceed smoothly.
