Any opinions are welcome. If you would like to read more, private message me and we can work something out! biggrin
The tires hum along the road as the car moves forward. A heavy rain has just ended, leaving puddles in our wake. Light moves through the car and brightens the moon-lit interior. It becomes darker as the car continues further down the highway. Headlights from another vehicle crest the horizon. I nervously glance at the younger version of myself sitting in the seat next to me. I wish I could warn them, do something, anything. Our parents are arguing in the front seat. They are always arguing at this point. The only other vehicle on the road is the tractor trailer steadily approaching from the opposite side, the owner of the phantom headlights. Our mother asks our dad, why we are always moving all the time, why we can't settle down. He ignores her, keeping his focus on the road. The tractor trailer is almost beside us. I cringe because I know what is going to happen next. At the last minute, the truck swerves into our lane. The fatal scene unfolds as I am being pulled out of the car by an unknown force. I jolt awake, the sound of crunching metal still ringing in my ears. The pounding in my head forces me to close my eyes and press my fingers to my temples. Aaron stirs next to me, groans, and wakes up as well. My tongue feels thick as I run it against my clenched teeth. The events that happened earlier that night come rushing back into my mind. The bed creaks as he joins me. He wraps his arm around my clammy stomach and asks if I'm okay. The image of the bald goatee man flinging me off of Aaron, interrupting our kiss, flashes before my eyes at the same time. The pounding worsens when I try to open my eyes. The downfall of drinking for the first time: the horrible experience of a hangover. I tell him it was just another one of the nightmares that have been plaguing my dreams for the last week. I haven't been able to get any sleep, and if this keeps up, I won't be any good to Director Mckenna. Aaron kisses my cheek and I feel him climb out of the bed. I hear him open the bathroom door, the click of a cabinet opening and closing, the rattle of pills falling out of a bottle, and running water. His bare feet slap on the hardwood floor as he returns. He hands me the glass of water and two white, oval shaped pills. I take them and pop them in my mouth. I swallow them with the water. It feels cool as it slides down my throat. "You'll probably need it more after what happened tonight." Aaron looks away with guilt in his eyes. "That wasn't just your fault, I'm to blame too. At least I'll remember this birthday." I give him a weak chuckle. "I'm worried. After bailing us out, Director McKenna hasn't ordered either of us to his office. When you told him about the bald man, he got uncomfortable. Then, he just yelled at us more. Aaron flops back onto the bed. He folds his arms under his head and stares at the stone ceiling. His stomach rises and falls with each breath he takes. I grip the empty glass with both of my hands. The pounding is slowly receding as the painkillers start to kick in. A pager beeps. Green light fills the room, dimmer than usual. We are both pulled out of our reveries. Aaron bolts off of the bed and starts searching through our clothes, which are strewn across the floor. He finally finds both pagers, but mine is the one who went off. He doesn't look at it as he brings it to me. It can only be one person. He hands it out to me, I hesitate, but take it and slowly bring it into focus. The black letters say: see me, ASAP. The number belongs to the one person Aaron and I are fearing the most right now, Director McKenna.
