If there was one thing you could depend on in the candidate barracks it was no matter how odd things got, no matter how bloody, no matter how strange that Niyx would take it all in with a smile and a slightly cynical little humorous quip. She was unflappable in such a manner. In fact other then a brief flash of worry most of the Weyr who took any note of the strange tall girl with the goggles around her neck and the short cropped copper hair were unsure she possessed any other emotions beyond her unusually chipper disposition. She was just weird like that.

However this time it was different. The candidates reacted to the news of the egg thefts in their own way. Some cried. Some were in shock. Others simply blew up.

But Niyx. . .she practically radiated an aura of pure cold fury even as she tried to smile and comfort the others, but her smiles were cold. Anger having iced over every single inch of warmth in her heart and every move, every word was as carefully calculated as her mathematical theories or movements in a play. Taking a breather outside from the panic of the barracks she took a seat on one of the low stone walls that ran between the buildings staring out into the distance past the lake.

Apparently Niyx did have other emotions though from the look in the candidates icy slate blue eyes the thieves would wish she didn't.

Ailin wasn't sure what he felt when it came to the egg thefts. It was troubling, and he of course wasn't happy they were gone. It was almost a betrayed feeling, but by who he couldn't say. It was just another thing to add to the growing column of 'why I belong at the Hall'.

At this moment, if someone said it was time to leave, Ailin would pack his bags and be gone in a heartbeat. It wasn't safe here. It had never been safe here. He'd be better off back at his families cothold getting the snot kicked out of him by Sasar than he was here.

Immersed in his own oddly brooding thoughts, Ailin sought out the one person he might actually call a close friend. Quietly he stepped over the low wall behind her and folded his long limbs into a comfortable position at her side. He glanced sideways at her and gave her a little crooked smile.

"You have words fighting for release." He observed as a subtle invitation to talk.

"There are some things that are unforgivable." Niyx replied narrowing her eyes even as she stared with a look that could kill out at the lakes and into the distance. "Whoever did this had no right to take children from their mothers and risk the eggs lives. Those poor poor eggs~" She trailed off thinking on the ones she'd touched. The Play Nice Egg had been one she'd greeted same with Still Thinking and Slender and poor Jitterbug. . .Niyx never really thought of the gold egg as anything, but Jitterbug. Mostly because she couldn't quite wrap her head around the fact she'd gotten to touch a gold dragon egg.

At least they'd taken larger eggs with better chances of surviving, but still. Taking the eggs off the sands at all was mind boggling as Niyx tried to do the survival percentage in her head and then with a wince thought better of it. "What if our dragons were among those eggs? Did you touch the Play Nice Egg? It seemed like one you would have liked? It was a sweet heart." She asked smilely a rather fond yet beitersweet smile even as her eyes remained hard at the loss of the precious eggs.

"I really don't want to lose any of poor Hyweth's clutch. With as rare as crimson clutches are there's no telling if she'll ever clutch again and Jitterbug. I don't think I'd have minded having a Gold dragon like it around. We have to get them back. We just have too." Niyx continued her sentence starting off soft and ending in a rather anger filled snarl. They would get the eggs back. No matter what they would. She hadn't been afraid to challenge an angry gold over the fate of a few eggs just on the sands. She certainly had no qualms risking her life for the sake of kidnapped eggs.

Forgiveness... Forgiving wasn't something Ailin did often, though what was there to forgive when you didn't allow yourself to become offended in the first place? By not getting involved, and letting others sort out their own problems, Ailin had no need to forgive people.

He sat in silence for a moment, talking with Niyx had become easier for him but it didn't change who he was. Her concern for the eggs was probably endearing to some. Ailin almost found it misplaced though. "We should be glad they did not come for us instead." He wet his lower lip, pursing his mouth before adding slowly. "Suunath and the other golds will lay again. With Thread there will always be clutches on the Sands or so the records say."

"If they intended to harm the eggs it would already be done I'd think." He didn't want to think about Play Nice. He hated this horrible feeling of indesiciveness. He would leave the Weyr the next chance he got. If he didn't have to Stand now then all the better. This only proved that being a rider was dangerous and he wanted none of it.

He wanted his flute, his flit, and a quiet life. He'd get his knots, be assigned to some backwoods hold and play teaching ballads for children till he turned grey and senile.

Niyx arched an eyebrow at her friend as she fought to control the ice the filled her viens at his words and the cold anger that rose freezing over logical thought in her mind. This was Ailin. He didn't deserve her ire the thieves did, but still. . .

"And what makes you think they won't? They got the eggs out from beneath to very protective and alert mother dragons. What's to stop them from coming back for us?" She warned letting that little piece of logic settle in.

"If anything I would think you'd be the most upset over this. At least we have legs and can run and flee and escape. True maybe the thieves don't mean the eggs any harm, but if the slightest thing goes wrong some poor dragonet will die a silent pain ridden death unable to flee or even cry out for help. There may be more eggs, but what if they're not our eggs? What if those were our eggs?" She questioned catching Ailin's eyes with her own slate gray one as she stared into them with unflinching ease.

"Could you really sleep at night with the knowledge you'd possibly abandoned your life mate to death by either chill or the cold grip of between because you weren't there? The knowledge that there will be more eggs doesn't comfort me because there will never be eggs like these ever again just as there will never be another your or another me." Niyx concluded turning once more to stare at the horizon.

"Or maybe there are no dragons for us, but I dare to dream. No good ballad was ever sung about a boy and girl who never left home and just ignored the world."

"No Herioc Ballads, and no Tragic Tales. I don't need songs sung about me." Alin countered, feeling defensive. His voice never raised, and no flash of anger ever crossed his face as he met Niyx's icy stare.

"I saw them, they only killed if you fought. Stay out of their way and you live." He looked down, examining the calluses on his hands. So many more than he'd had a turn before. He'd changed so much... and Ailin wasn't sure he liked it at all. He sighed. "Even if they remained on the Sands they could still die. If a dragonet betweens what is the difference between here or there to them? At least they have the option of betweening. They don't need to suffer." Not like he had when his brother's had set upon him. Humans could be pummeled and broken, unable to escape. Dragon's always had a way out, a way to escape any bonds.

"Put that way, what if our dragons were born thousands of turns before us? What if our dragons were among that first clutch hatched so long ago? A dragonet searches out the most suitable of those around it. I don't believe there is just 'one dragonet for everyone'. Either way, as is, there are worse things troubling my dreams than 'Not Impressing'." It was a lot for the habitually quiet harper to say. Ailin'd expected to just let his friend rant. He'd smile and nod, and make an agreeing noise on occasion. This was outside of his very small comfort zone.
