Prompt: Meta's First Family Christmas
I creep down the stairs as quietly as I can, careful to keep the wall between me and the living room. It's hard sneaking anywhere when you glow slightly all the time. Oh boy, it is Christmas Eve today and Mom helped me lay out cookies and milk for Santa. This is the third time I've been down to check for Santa. I know he'll come, and I've been a really really good girl but I just can't rest till I know he's been and gone.
Carefully I peek around the edge of the wall where it turns into railing and peer down at the tree and stockings hung over the fireplace. Good thing there's not a fire roaring in that hearth like there usually is in the winter months. Can you imagine popping down a chimney all full of good cheer and suddenly! Fire! That would put a crimp in old Chris Cringle's beard. If it didn't light it on fire first.
I gasp excitedly. The stockings are bulging! There are presents under the tree! There are crumbs on the cookie plate and the milk glass is empty! He came! He came! He came! Oh no, Mom looked up from her knitting on the couch and has just spotted me. I hope she won't tell Santa. After all she must have met him personally.
Instead of scolding me she smiles fondly. Oh good, I must be doing the cute thing. "Wiley. Can't you sleep?" She asks quietly so I won't wake my new older brother, Ask, who's been away at school but has come home for the holidays.
"I'm too excited Mom. Did you meet Santa!? Is he really tall? Or is he kinda short? I think I like the idea of a tall Santa." I trundled down the rest of the stairs in my flowing cream jammies and golden slippers. the glow off my body and hair showing in a warm glare across the hardwood floors. "He... he knows I'm a girl right?" That was a big bone of contention. I even have long hair to give people a clue, but it only seems to make it worse. Now they assume I'm a boy to try and avoid offending me right off.
"Of course he knows that, dear." My Mom says and pats the sofa next to her. I grin and clamber up so I can snuggle into her nice warm side. "Santa doesn't make mistakes like that. He's got a magic list." Oh man, oh boy. How cool is that?
"And I'll not tell you a single thing about Santa's physical appearance, you will meet him when you become a parent." I make a face. Ew, boys. Or girls I guess. My newest brother introduced me to his boyfriend when we went to pick him up. He's super pretty and I think he might have the same problem of being ambiguous as I do. But the idea of meeting Santa. In person. That is definitely something I want to do. Maybe I can work for him when I grow up.
"Anyway, how about I make you some hot chocolate, Wiley. Then you should go back to bed. Oh, and do let me wake Ask in the morning. He sleeps very deeply." Mom says and I hop off the couch to follow her into the kitchen, trying not to peer into my stocking or see my name on presents under the tree. I'm failing a little as I catch a glimpse of a particularly large present with my name displayed proudly on the top. OOoh maybe I can just-
"Wiley!" Mom calls somewhat loudly from the kitchen, reminding me to hurry up and get away from the tempting presents. "What happened to not waking Ask?" I wonder as I scamper and slide across the floor into the kitchen.
