Berath was passing information about the party on to him, just in case he was interested. He wasn't, and so he shut it out; he had more important things to worry about than who had won the scavenger hunt.

Bereck shifted slightly, opened his mouth and then closed it again. There really was no sense in putting this off. He was nervous, in fact nervous was putting it mildly. He didn't even know why, after all he'd never said anything bad about her....

"So... I wanted to talk to you about something." He finally looked up at Aleck again. "You probably gathered something of the sort from the silence." How exactly was he going to start? His stomach was trying to tie itself into knots.

"Kind of," Aleck admitted over the scrape of crockery as he arranged Bereck's dinner on a tray. It was a bit richer fare than usual - party food, really - and if it seemed unsocial and rude to be scouting around the edge of the festivities and then spiriting away, then so be it. The young man carried the tray over with steady hands and looked over the rims of his glasses. "What's up, Dad?"

It wasn't in him to worry, but 'in the event of my death' would not be a good way to start off.

Bereck shifted slightly and gently dislodged the pile of firelizards that had been sprawled across his legs. He wasn't hungry in the least; he still hadn't regained much of an appetite and what little he did have was lost under the nervousness, but he would eat because it would please Aleck. He shifted again, raised a hand to his head and removed his glasses, pinching the bridge of his nose and closing his eyes for a moment; how hard could this possibly be?

He opened his eyes, replaced his glasses and lowered his hand. "Your mother," he said eventually. "I wanted to talk to you about her." Good start... or at lease not abysmal. He thought. Talking to Aleck was usually easy; not so right now.
