Is destiny a concept taught by a specific religion? Because I'm a catholic and I believe in the ability for people to do what they want in life and I don't like (I don't mean to be disrespectful) how God can bend and manipulate the course of our lives when ever he wants... (I know he doesn't though)... I just want to know if it is ok to believe in destiny, but still be a practicing catholic...

I tend to find that it IS indeed religion that comes up with this idea of 'destiny' (having an all-powerful deity that can determine everything and all things and has the power to do so tends to allow that sort of thing). Most science has determined that almost everything, on a quantum level, is pretty much chance. There isn't any real evidence for the idea of 'destiny', and there isn't any reason to believe in such. What I CAN say, for a fact, is that your choices can help put you on a specific path in life, though you are not limited to a linear pathway.

Predestination is like, Calvinism or something, yes? I'm not sure if that's really what you're talking about. You should discuss it with your priest.

Heathenry has Wyrd, which is sort of like an interactive form of fate. Certain "plot points" are unavoidable, but other things change depending on the choices you make, and the choices you make also influence the world.

I like to call it "Free will fate" because I think we have the destiny of our choosing, but we aren't always aware of what we're choosing emotion_8c

"Destiny is not a matter of change, it is a matter of choice, it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. Time is the fire in which we burn. Who is more foolish, the child afraid of the dark or the man afraid of the light?" -Atheos Zen

I think Kemu is on the right track. I am Catholic as well.

Even within the Bible it speaks of predicting things yet to come. Jesus knew that Judas would betray him, but he didn't stop it either, though he could have. The bible also says:

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations." ~Jeremiah 1:5

"I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life." ~Dt.30:19

And in the Catechism:

(311) Angels and men, as intelligent and free creatures, have to journey toward their ultimate destinies by their free choice and preferential love. They can therefore go astray. Indeed, they have sinned. Thus has moral evil, incommensurably more harmful than physical evil, entered the world. God is in no way, directly or indirectly, the cause of moral evil.176 He permits it, however, because he respects the freedom of his creatures and, mysteriously, knows how to derive good from it:
For almighty God. . ., because he is supremely good, would never allow any evil whatsoever to exist in his works if he were not so all-powerful and good as to cause good to emerge from evil itself. (St. Augustine, Enchiridion 3,11: PL 40,236.)

(1703) Endowed with "a spiritual and immortal" soul,5 the human person is "the only creature on earth that God has willed for its own sake."6 From his conception, he is destined for eternal beatitude.

So basically God planned you out and knows what his plan for you is, but he also knows your heart and what your actions and choices will be. And, even if your actions go against what God has planned for you, he will let you because we have free will. He will also be waiting for you, should you chooses to have a change of heart and do his will. It takes a lot of prayer to decern what God is calling you to do.

Hope this helped! I recommend looking up some of Mark Hart: the Bible Geek, he is pretty fantastic.
