After Charcoal's death defying mishap and flight from that ruthless dog during his very last race to become a runner, Coal slept. He wasn't sure how long or if it was more like a coma but he drifted. He difted in a light floaty place. It was like a field or meadow but he was sure the edges were made of clouds, not trees and other rabbit were drifting in and out of those 'clouds'. Not that he could reach them. The meadow seemed endless and empty. It was during a peaceful nap in this meadow that he felt a nose at his foot. He looked up to see what must have been an ancestor of his staring at him. The fist time he'd seen another rabbit in this meadow. He really had thought of it as empty.

"You need to quit drifting here in limbo little one." said the old buck. Briefly he remembered his marli's description of grandpa. This guy seemed to be it.

"This is limbo?" Coal was confused. "I didn't die?"

The buck shook his head. "No, you didn't. You lost alot of blood but Althea seemed determined not to loose you. She did what she could to stop the bleeding and get you cleaned up. You've been 'asleep' for four days. She and a few others have guarded you."

Coal's mouth dropped. "I'm alive?"

"Yup. And it's time to go back now. You look like hell, everything is gonna hurt like a b***h and healing isn't gonna be fun but you live. Now go back."

With that Coal felt the buck give him a hard shove and then everything seemed to dissipate. His grandfather and the meadow and the strange light that seemed to suffuse the place. In an instant it was like traveling down a tunnel and then with a jolt he was back in his body. With a gasp he was awake and with another gasp the pain hit him. Everywhere. He swore and then started to weep. "I'm alive. Oh Firth it all hurts."

The old marli lay hunkered close the broken form of the sleeping buck. Still sleeping, but still breathing. Shuddering, she closed her eyes and tried not to remember the night, the others helping her drag him further away from the farm so the damned dog wouldn't follow the blood.

And there had been so very much blood. She cringed as if she could still taste it. It took a lot of cleaning, and re-cleaning, and checking every day to make sure the wounds weren't smelling bad. At least he was still breathing. Opening her eyes to turn towards him, the gesture was mostly pointless in the dim light within the shallow scrape she'd dug out for them. Breathing. Maybe if he ever woke up again he'd run too. Unlike Falcon.

Frith, on her watch too. What a fine Owsla she was, pah. Owsla of hraka. At least she'd found some runners out of the bunch after all. She'd sent them back to the down, the whole lot of them, but some had stayed for a time. Day by day she chased them off though, no sense others having to pay for her error. If the dog found them...

Apparently she wasn't going to be sleeping after all. Huffing, the doe wriggled out of the smallest entrance she could allow for her girth and out into the chilly air. It was dark and unfamiliar, her senses pricked as she sat up and looked around carefully, staying close to the scrape as she silflayed alone with her thoughts.

She lifted her head suddenly, perking her ears as she flattened herself as much as possible. There had been...something, some small sound. Again! From... the scrape?!

Scuttling back to the hole and promptly scrambling to push her mass into it, the Owsla doe heard Charcoal and his sobbing, instantly relieved and frightened at the same time.

"Well bless my bottom... "

She swore in amazement while knocking loose earth about as she pressed in.

"By Frith, welcome back Charcoal, but hush shhh, keep it down. Wouldn't do to for Inle` to bring you back only for your cries to bring on the elil."

Leaning her bulk gently against his, she tried to comfort him with her presence, trying to be mindful of his tattered body.

It took Coal a minuet to realize he was no longer in the place he'd dragged himself to before passing out and that it was a hand dug new hole. Not nearly as protective or deep as their warren, he could fee the cool air, but still safer than the outside. In the back of his head he was amazed Althea could fit through the small opening. She had always been so big.

He hiccuped as he began to reel in the initial panic of being back in his body and the pain. "Sorry Chief. I think I was just talking to my grandfather. Little bit of a shock for a minuet there." There were still tears but they were silent now as he got used to his crippled body. With a sardonic smile he bated at one of his now tattered and half floppy ears. "Well either this is a terrible joke or reality sucks." He tuned then to look at Althea, squeezed into their tiny space "This isn't the way I wanted to get noticed Althea. Running was supposed to be a way to move up in the warren. Not down." Quietly he mentally took stock of his injuries. Ears, both, face, back, left back leg. So not everything. Just most of everything. The only rabbits he'd ever seen with this many scars and wounds where hlessi or officers. More than likely the other rabbits would be afraid of him now. He'd look like a hlessi. What would his marli think? He frowned made a slightly pitiful noise. "I don't know if I can go back to the warren like this."
