I know you've already made a decision on this, but I'd like to point out that 82,000 is not small enough to guarantee that people will know your business. I'm in a town of 24,000 (and have been for a few years) and the only people who know I'm gay are people I've told.

Ok I did it. I came out at work. I had a meeting with my boss today and it went great. Three people said they weren't surprised at all and are glad I'm being myself at last. Seems a few people already knew! Everyone was really friendly and supportive and I had a really positive day. So yes, I still have a job and I can be myself! One guy was like, why are you telling us, we know, its obvious! So thanks for all the support from you guys here and angst all over now!

I'm glad to hear your coming-out went so well! c: It can be difficult for many to do so, especially with the complications that work may provide. But, I am very happy for you to have been so successful in your endeavor!
