Phyllida jumps into a puddle of water, giggling to herself as it splashes around her. She loved the rain. It always seemed to make the world look more dull, and in a way more exciting. She was the first to understand that the most interesting things rarely came in extravagant packages. The small girl turns to her parents, looking fairly content and happy with herself "Look at the rain Tick Mama! It's a Tock great day!" Phyl's mother, Matilda nods nervously, looking at her husband who looks back. Ericson Birchwood was a tall, stern looking man who enjoyed dressing as if every day was formal wear day. He and Phyl weren't related by blood, despite the fact they looked very much alike.
The trio walks down the sidewalk, coming to the park inside the city. Ericson Birchwood pulls Phyllida to the side, handing her an umbrella "We're going to do some things in town Phyllida. Stay right here until we come back." Phyl nods eagerly, hugging Abaca close to her chest "I wiiill!" Matilda gives her husband another nervous look before backing away.
"Goodbye Phyllida."
And in moments, they were gone. Phyl sits on the park bench, playing with Abaca's hair and smiling at Cupid, who was nestled on her shoulder "What do Tock you think they're doing Cupid?" He puffs up his feathers in reply "...Yeah, Tock you can't tock. Oh well." She hums softly to herself, whittling the day away by counting how many seconds the park clock was off and pretending Abaca was alive and playing with her.
The minutes turn into hours.
Phyl's parents had been gone exactly 13 hours, 45 minutes and 16 seconds. She knew, because she counted. She was able to count the time like she was able to count the raindrops, which were slowly soaking her socks and giving her chills. But still, the small girl waited.
"...They've been gone Tock awfully long Tick haven't they? It's past suppertime...?" Phyl wasn't concerned about her parents coming back; after all, they loved her. Why would she worry?
The hours turn into a day.
Phyl's head droops, and she sits up, startled. Her parents were gone for 26 hours, 13 minutes and 56 seconds. She frowns, looking at Cupid sleepily "Do you Tock think they got lost somewhere? I'm sure that's not all that difficult to Tick do...in a big city like this..." Cupid tilts his head, nuzzling her cheek comfortingly. Phyl was freezing, and the rain still poured off her umbrella.
The day became two.
Two became three.
And at 79 hours, 59 minutes and 11 seconds, Phyllida Birchwood passed out, emotionally and Physically exhausted from how long she had waited. When she woke up, she was in a small clinic, with new clothes around her and a doctor talking on the phone with someone from a 'Meta Academy'. She didn't remember much of the conversation afterwards, but there was one word that stuck with her, and would for the rest of her life.
"Abandoned."
