Chapter One: Announcement and a Plan
"Children, please quiet down," Mrs. Grace Lane tells us. We were all called in here for an announcement. I usually don't listen to any announcements, but as Mr. Thomas Lane starts to speak, his words interest me, so I decide to listen.
"Now, if you haven't heard already, a fleet of ships is leaving from Holland in a week. This fleet will go to a world across the sea." Mr. Lane says. He looks happy but sort of sad at the same time.
I lean over to Aida, my best friend, and whisper, "I bet we can go. A new world would be wonderful. Just think of the things we could explore."
"Yes, Faine, that would be wonderful, but do you really think they will take two orphaned girls who aren't even twelve years old?" Aida whispers back, "I doubt it. They will take the men and strong boys first; we would most likely be last or not go at all."
She was right, they wouldn't take us. I tune back in to Mrs. Lane, "I hope it does not disappoint you children too much. We have loved working here and raising each one of you, but this is a one-time chance, and they need Mr. Thomas and our three boys." I soon realize what I missed, they're leaving. Leaving the orphans. Why would they, Mrs. Lane could stay and let the men go, couldn't she?
"Reverend Peter Jaimeson and his wife will be in charge after we leave." Mr. Lane continues, "We expect all of you to be well behaved for the two of them, for they have many other tasks. Monday will be our last day working here; we will pack that night and rest until Wednesday. The boats leave early Wednesday morning; they expect to arrive in the new world in a month and a half, if no difficulties come our way."
"Thank you, children, for understanding. We wish you well in the time we are gone and hope you can join us in the new world someday. Now, time for lunch," Mrs. Lane concluded. All of the children, except Aida and I, jump up and ran to the tables.
“Aida, we have to be on that ship.” I tell her, she just shakes her head. “Please, please, please. I have an idea.”
“But Faine, we will be noticed. It’s not like they won’t check the ship before they set sail.” She has a point, but my plan counteracts that.
“True. But if we hide someplace until the ship sets sail, we’ll be safe. After they’re on the ocean, they aren’t going to turn back around just because two girls sneaked onto the ship.” I tell her, but she doesn’t look too entertained. “Come on, we’ll pack our bags Tuesday night while everyone is sleeping. Then we will wake up real early Wednesday morning and get on the ship before anybody else. Are you with me?”
Aida nods her head, “Yes, I guess so.” We promise each other we won’t back out and head for the table to eat.
((I'm posting my chapters in different posts at different times as I am very busy. I hope that's okay.))
