I don't know if anyone cares, but I'm still alive.
As you all know, Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast on Monday.
I live on Long Island, NY. We were hit pretty badly. Anyone on the shoreline was evacuated. I had family staying with me. We were without power & water since Monday evening. Just getting them both back within the last couple of hours. We have been charging our electronics & showering at work & at friends' houses. Cell phone service has been very sketchy, only able to receive texts & calls without being able to send anything out. It seems to be working pretty well now.
I feel like this whole thing was a nightmare.
My paycheck was screwed up & I was shorted a bunch of money. We lost power because of the storm, but thought we were saved by our generator. Which after a few hours stopped working. I had to go to work at 5:30am the next day, otherwise I'd be written up even though we were in a "New York : State Of Emergency", which I think is bullshit. No Cell Phone service was working at all. My grandparents' house half flooded.... everything was just a nightmare.
There are 925,000 people on this island without power right now.
I am very fortunate to only have gone 2 days without it.
The electric company says it could be up to 7-10 days before others get power.
Half of New York is still underwater. It's crazy & unbelievable.
Everyone I know is safe & sound.
I am thankful I have a roof over my head.
Now that I have power back, I am looking for a place to volunteer to help.
Maybe a food pantry, shelter, soup kitchen, or debris clean up.
I hope everyone is safe and with their families at this time.
