She was supposed to go to a nice wealthy family in the next town over... they had already sent her presents and letters and things, she had even bonded with the sewing kit they had sent to go along with a DIY bear. But when it came time to go, when she was sitting on the bench just outside of the academy, all of her things packed up in a trunk, they never showed.
Instead one of the Elders, Avon, came. He stepped outside of the gate and wordlessly sat down on the bench next to her, and stayed like that for a few minutes. Eventually curiosity got the best of her and she looked up to see his face, but before she could ask why he was there, she realized he looked... sad.
"They've withdrawn their adoption application, I'm afraid."
The words didn't seem to make any sense at first... she frowned, blinking a few times before looking away. "But... I have all of my things ready," was all she could say.
"I'm sorry Adessi, but I think I have someone who might be able to take you home today, if you would like to meet him."
Avon stood, and offered a hand to her. She stared at it for a moment before taking it, all of the energy she had before was gone. "What happened?" She stared at up at him expectantly as he grabbed her trunk.
"I can't say, Adessi. Sometimes parents change their minds, and there's nothing we can really do about it." He sighed and shook his head, and lead her back to the main building of the academy. She never really liked that building, it was lonely feeling... big, dark, empty. He took her up to his office, got her something to drink, and then excused himself to get this "new person" she could probably live with.
She looked around the office, most of the stuff was fairly uninteresting, though some of it was intriguing... she thought about getting up to mess with the fancy looking massive marble in the corner when the door opened. Avon walked in, leading another man... smaller, more frail, and very very pale. Adessi was immediately attracted to the fluffy ears and tail he had, but kept quiet.
"Enosio, this is Adessi... Adessi, this is Enosio." Avon went to sit in his chair behind his desk, motioning for the man, Enosio, to sit in the one other free chair. "I think it might be in everyone's best interest if she came to stay with you..." Avon trailed off, watching the reaction Enosio had to such a proposal, he didn't seem very into it, and Adessi definitely picked up on that.
"I don't... With everything that's going on I don't think I would be the best choice for her." Enosio shook his head, sighing.
"I know, it seems difficult, but I'm sure Zahur would benefit from having a sibling his age to interact with, and Adessi's parents backed out of adopting her earlier today, its a win all the way around." Avon frowned, shaking his head a little.
Enosio turned his head to look at Adessi, and sighed wearily... He seemed so worn out, she almost considered telling Avon not to send her home with him, she'd probably just be a bother, right?
"I can't really afford to support another child, Avon." He looked back to the Elder, who shook his head.
"The school will pay for her clothing and other necessities, you don't have to worry about that. I'm more concerned about her not having a family to grow up with. If you can provide that, we'll handle the rest." Avon offered him a smile, as if that would help.
That seemed to win Enosio over, at least on the outside he seemed to be mulling it over more. "Alright... she can come stay with us if she likes..." He looked to Adessi, raising a brow.
"Well Adessi, if you would like you can go live with Enosio, he has two sons already, a teenage boy, River, and a boy your age, Zahur." Avon stood, and moved closer to Adessi.
"I guess..." She was apprehensive about it, but it was probably the only family that might want her, right?
And so, she left with Enosio, stopping along the way to pick up Zahur from the nurse's office on the way home.

Hello Diary.
My new father is very nice. He is very nervous, though. We went to get my new brother from the nurse's office, and he seemed to get even more nervous. My brother, Zahur, does not remember anything from the past few weeks. Or months. He is still very nice. He is calm. I like calm.
Mister Avon had told me that the family that was going to adopt me lived in a big house on a hill. My new father lives in a small house tucked behind some other houses. A very small house. It is cold, he told me that he is sorry but he does not have a lot of money to run the heating. It is okay though, there is a fire place and we sit in front of it for meal times.
I met a boy named Sharma. He is strange. He would not stop talking about pudding. I do not see why pudding is so great, I mean... it is good but it is nothing special.
I also met a girl name Nikole, she is very loud and excitable. But she is nice. And another boy, Echo. He is...
I do not think that I like Echo very much.
There is going to be a Nightmare Before Christmas Ball. I want to go. Father did not really want me to, but I asked very nicely and he gave in. He will not let Zahur go, though. I do not understand why Zahur cannot leave the house. Father seems to get really, really scared when Zahur hints at wanting to go up to the school with me, or go outside to play. Zahur says he does not mind staying inside all of the time, but still... I do not understand.
I have not met my other new brother, River, yet. Father tells me he is an angel, and a teenager. He lives in the dorms, I suppose that is why I have not seen him yet. I hope that he will be as nice as Zahur. Maybe I will see him at the ball.
I wish I had a better costume... I am sure that everyone will think mine is stupid.

Hello Diary.
Today I am angry. I have been angry for awhile, I think. But I do not like anger so I try to ignore it. My new Father is very controlling of my brother Zahur. He will not let him out of sight if he can help it. The academy sends money to help him pay for my expenses, but still, for some reason my father does not seem to have enough money to keep everyone adequately fed, and the house properly heated.
This makes me angry.
The Elder Liliana came by to take Zahur on a hike. I am glad that he got to go outside, even if it was with a grown up. Father had a break down, I do not think he remembered that I was home. He does not seem to have much of an attention span. He called someone on the telephone and was talking hysterically about all of these... things.
They made me angry.
I am not angry at father. I do not really understand why things are the way that they are but I am not angry at father... I... I am just angry.
Father mentioned his "boss" that he works for at his job while he was on the phone. I did not understand everything he was saying but I could tell that it was not good. I think maybe we struggle because father is not adequately paid for his work. I am worried for father, he is growing thinner and weaker. I am too, but it is okay. There are snacks at the academy that I can eat. Sometimes I bring home some for Zahur. Father will not accept them.
I am angry. And I do not wish to be angry, but not wishing to be angry just makes me more angry. I do not understand.
My other brother is supposed to come to visit. I have not met him on campus yet. Father says that he is very nice and we will get along. I wonder why he is not helping? He is older than Zahur and I. He should lend father a hand, I think. I will let him know this when he comes to visit.
