Riley had no time to waste, her next class was at the far end of the hall in the math wing. She had chosen to take an extra math class to help her get into RU the university closest to her hometown. She nearly ran the entire way but made it on time. This schedule would definitely be the death of her this year if she didn't stay on top of the work load. And art class was going to prove a challenge for her too having to work with Anne who she was still convinced didn't like her much.
Oh well... here we go...
After another 5 classes from everything from computer science to college english she was exhausted and ready to go home and drop though she knew she had homework first. When she reached the parking lot she started walking to her small beat down honda and saw Anne leaning against the hood of the car next to her. She avoided looking her way as she opened her door and tossed her bag inside. When she turned around Anne was next to her driver door.

Anne had survived her first day at yet another new school. The thought of being in another new place still angered her. She hated moving all the time and wanted nothing more to get this year over with and move back to California where her mother and younger sister still lived.
Anne was sitting on the hood of her small orange kia when she Riley walk outside and head almost straight in her direction. It took a minute before she realized the car next to her must belong to Riley, and she was slightly thankful. She had felt the need to appologize for being so harsh this morning in both art and again in chemistry. Her feelings were still just a bit raw from the move. She had left everything and everyone she loved behind yet again, and this time hurt just a little worse.
She slid off of the hood and walked over to Riley. Riley spun around and was obviously startled by her sudden appearance. It took her a minute to speak. "Look, I'm sorry I was such an a** this morning in art class. I wasn't very welcoming to you. My nerves are just kinda shot right now. This is the third high school I've been enrolled in in the past four years, and I guess its wearing on me." She fidgetted with the pebbles under her sneaker as she spoke; she wasn't really used to appologizing.

Riley wasn't sure what to say so she just nodded. "I understand. Its okay really."
Riley suddenly felt bad even though she had no reason to. She pulled a piece of paper out of a notebook and scribbled down her cell phone number. "I know what its like to be in a class you don't like and chemistry can get a lot to handle. Here, this is my number if you ever need any help with the work."
She handed the page to Anne who took it with a small thank you and put it away in her jeans. She waited a minute before excusing herself and saying a polite goodbye. She watched Anne head back to her car and waited for her to get inside before she left the parking lot. Anne was confusing but hopefully she could work with her alright to get through art class. Something about the girl made her wonder.

Anne wasn't quite sure how to take the fact that Riley had just given her her phone number. Instead of disecting the act she simply tossed the paper onto her dresser and went to work on her assignments. What kind of person assigned homework on the first day of classes?!
After an eternity of reading and note taking she glanced at the neon numbers of the clock by her bed and yawned. It was already 11pm. She gave up the fight and put her books away for the night. She was asleep in seconds.
The rest of the week flew by. The days became a blur of dull introduction lectures and endless reading assignments. Even art proved to be mind-numbingly boring for the first few days. All of the projects were individual ones to start out to prepare everyone. She hadn't spoken more than a handful of words to Riley in days. Anne was curious about her though she really didn't understand why. Riley was the complete opposite of everything she was and was quick to wear on her nerves.

Riley was completely stressed out only one week into the school year. She had spent the weekend filling out college applications. She had only applied to three schools and was praying that she would get into RU. Worst case she would go to one of the other two if she had to.
She walked into the school this morning rubbing the bags under her eyes. She was still asleep when she got into the art classroom. Anne was already at the desk when she sat down and put her head down on the table. She was up until 12 last night and was still beat.
She jumped awake when the teacher walked by and threw a stack of papers in front of her. It was a new assignment that would be a pair project. Great...
According to the paper, they would be doing a mosaic in pairs. There was a bunch of guidelines and instructions underneath the basic project subject that Riley was too tired to pay attention to.

Anne was doodling in her sketchpad when Riley flopped down next to her and shut her eyes with her head on the desk. The dark circles under her eyes told Anne she was exhausted. The teacher began to pass around papers with their next assignment.
Anne was excited to see that they would be doing mosaics. She loved every form of art, but a subject matter that was hands on and let her truly create something out of other materials was a real treasure. Riley didn't seem half as thrilled as she did.
"Rough night?" She asked Riley sympathetically. "I take it you're not too interested in mosaics huh?" Judging by the expression on Riley's face, she was not that eager to start the new assignment.

Riley shrugged. Her lack of sleep this weekend and all the stress of classes and getting ready for college was beating her down. The teacher started explaining the assignment and what it had to be on and what everyone had to do. They would have to make a design and use pieces of tile to create it. The design had to 'mean something' to them but Riley wasn't sure what they would have in common to use for the project.
The last half of class was going to be used to start working on the design. "So what all did you have in mind for this project?" Riley looked at Anne hoping she had an idea. "Two weeks doesn't seem long enough if you ask me."

Anne wasn't sure how they were ever going to find a common subject matter for the project, but they had to try if they wanted to pass. The design needed an explanation of why they chose their subject and why it was significant to each of them, which wouldn't be an easy thing to make up.
They would have to get to know each other outside of their grouchy morning meetings if they wanted to get this done. "If you're up for it today after school, maybe we could meet up and discuss the project. We could go for a coffee and maybe wake up a bit?"
Anne smiled sympathetically at Riley who was still slumped over her notebooks and barely concious. If her success in art depended on her table-mate's performance she would do everything in her powers to get her on board and get along.

Riley groaned a little but figured it would probly help them out if they did get to know each other. And coffee sounded like a really good idea to help wake up. "Sure, I can meet you after classes in the parking lot. There's a cafe a couple blocks away downtown."
She tried her best to perk up and took out a paper to start doodling ideas. She started drawing some flowers and shading them in with her pencil. They were one thing she was decent at drawing. She could never draw people or animals or anything like that but flowers she could draw. They never had to be perfect so she could bend themn however she wanted.
She noticed Anne had stopped her own drawing and was watching her doodle. "That bad?"

Anne snapped back from her thoughts and realized she had been staring at Riley draw. Anne couldn't understand why this girl would ever dislike art class when she could create a drawing like that. The flowers that she had been sketching were incredible and seemed to jump from the page. She had a natural talent and didn't even know it.
"Bad?" Anne asked back in confusion at Riley's question. "That's amazing! For a science expert you can sure draw."
Riley looked taken aback by her statement and glanced at her drawing skeptically for a minute. Anne shook her head not understanding why this girl was so critical of her skills. "It really is a nice drawing. You sure you're not an artist in secret?"
Anne tried joking and gave her a funny smirk to try and lighten her exhausted mood before it became contagious.

Riley was surprised that someone actually liked her drawings, especialy coming from an artist like Anne. She was really kind of flattered. Riley perked up a little and smiled back to Anne. It was nice she tried to cheer her up. Riley really appreciated it and it did help to lift her mood a bit.
"Thanks. I just doodle a bit in my spare time, nothing serious."
She turned shy suddenly and went back to her paper. The loud ring of the bell saved her. Riley grabbed her stuff and started walking to science class. She wasn't very comfortable with compliments. Soon she would be lost in chemistry notes though.

"Hey! Hold Up!" Anne ran down the hall after Riley. She wasn't sure why she felt the need to chase after her seeming as they would be stuck next to each other in a few minutes anyways in chemistry. Still, she ran down the hall until she came next to Riley again. It was obvious that Riley was a bit uncomfortable around her, but she couldn't understand why.
Anne lost all ability to speak and forgot whatever was on her mind to ask the moment she caught up with her and decided on silence instead. They entered chemistry without a word. Chemistry always flew by in a frantic blur of scribbled notes and haphazard diagrams that lost all meaning when Anne left the classroom.
Before she let Riley get away again, she rushed to block her exit when the bell buzzed again. "Hey, we're still on for coffee right? Do you think maybe you could give me a hand with making sense of these last few lectures while we're at it?" Anne pleaded for help with desperate eyes. She really needed some help since the teacher had just announced an exam taking place next Monday. Seven days...

Riley couldn't afford to cancel their coffee plans because she did need to work on the art project. She also thought it would help to take a break after the long weekend of work. "Yeah, no problem." Riley could tell Anne really needed the help by the look on her face. She couldn't just refuse her help when she was offering to help her back.
"Just be sure to bring your textbook with you. I can make you a copy of my notes if you want. I can see yours are a bit hard to read." She said pointing at the papers in Anne's hands. She smiled and even giggled a little at the mess of notes.
Riley excused herself from the room to run to the next class. By the end of the day she was a little nervous but also excited to go do something outside of school. She never really got out. She was always studying or locked up in her room doing homework. She made sure she hurried outside to meet Anne. Maybe they could even become friends after all this work was over. There was something odd that drew her to Anne that she couldn't figure out just yet.

Anne had been relieved when Riley agreed to help her with chemistry. Anne had spent the rest of the day preoccupied, worrying about the exam the following week and about the meeting with Riley this afternoon. Anne sat on the hood of her car soaking in the sunlight and clearing her thoughts. Riley confused her to no end. One minute she was exhausted and grouchy, like she couldn't stand being next to her, and the next she was actually giggling at Anne's lack of note-taking skills. This girl was going to be a handful.
Anne thought back to the small hint of inner child that had taken hold of Riley after class and couldn't help but smile. It was unexpected but a side of Riley that Anne figured she wouldn't mind seeing more of. As her thoughts began to wander over the image of her art partner, she had to shake herself back to reality. What am I doing?? This was not possible for her to be attracted to someone like Riley, someone so different from herself.
The arrival of Riley at her car made Anne snap up with a stumble and a deep cherry blush. She felt her face heat and fumbled for words. "Hi... I, uh, thought maybe we could carpool over, if thats ok?"

Riley smiled and greated Anne. "Sure, that sounds good. Do you know where the place is? or would you like me to drive?" She was talking fast and excited to get out somewhere. They decided on taking her car because it was less messy and drove to the cafe downtown. They picked a booth in back with less noise and room for their books.
Riley took little sips of her coffee and tried explaining the reactions they needed again. Anne was slowly getting the hang of it and she was surprised how quick. After about an hour of chemistry talk, Riley thought they should start talking about the art project.
"So I guess we need to learn some more about each other for this art project? Where are you from first?" Riley was getting interested to find out more about her. It was interesting being paired with someone so different from heself.
