The word of mouth had been that some rather upper crust horse breeders and handlers needed able bodied men to work an auction. Something about recently them getting to many horses and how everyone was getting ready to relocate with winter coming and would need new horses or this and that. the reasons didn't matter to Marcus. Work was work, and he'd gone following the lead he'd heard. He needed coin they needed men who knew how to work with horses and who could actually deal with 'upper crust' and were not disreputable.

If he, a runaway slave was reputable was anyone's guess. He was a free man in his own eyes and had committed no crimes. Not in Sunderland in any case.

He'd arrived, was given a run down of his duties, given a 'temporary' set of 'presentable' work clothes and sent on his way. His job would be saddling and brushing the horses before sending them out to try an entice the nobles gathering to buy. His hair was dyed, scars hidden, brand not looking like it would be exposed anytime soon. The only problem-

The tiny fawn that had followed him around. Bloodrunner was less underfoot so much as he was a worry. The tiny fawn was around the much larger creatures, who really seemed to pay him no mind. The other hired hands however were passing him curious looks. Marcus didn't blame them, the little 'guardian' looking more like it was the one in need of guarding.

The day was indeed a busy one. On the large Torrell estate there were working hands of all sorts running about, preparing, setting up, tending to the horses, and making sure everything was running smoothly. Even the owners of the place were lending a hand, including young Eluf. He always helped during such important events, and quite liked it, infact. Dressed in his usual work attire, he moved about like the lending hands that were diligent in their roles, watering the horses, grooming them, feeding them, and switching out who was to be on what pastures, and preparing those that were to be sold. Though it was an exciting day, it was also one that Eluf was slightly sad about. It meant he'd be losing a few of his friends..

It was all for a good cause, though. A large portion of the money was not only saved, but also sent back overseas to his parents homelands. At his side was his trusty guardian Axe. The large buck intimidated a great deal of those helping out on the land, causing many to give the pair a wide berth, even with Eluf's sweet smile, and pretty appearance. He didn't let it get to him too much, though... Macaire wouldn't have been afraid to approach him. A fond, and shy smile crept onto the boys face at the thought of the soldier, causing the black buck beside him to snort softly, in order to get the human's head out of the clouds. Looking up to those golden eyes, Eluf gave a knowing expression, and a delicate gloved hand lifted to stroke his steed's neck in affection.

They reached the stables soon enough, his earth toned eyes looking about at those who were tending to the mighty beasts. Everything was looking great! Walking down the large middle path way, his gaze caught to the sight of a tiny, precious fawn. Instantly, he froze, eyes widening in awe and astonishment, before his legs started to work again and guide him towards the curious pair. Axe noticed the youngling much earlier, ears pinning back hard, eyes narrowing with a displeased grunt as Eluf advanced towards the creature. Keeping a respectful distance, Eluf smiled sweetly to both Marcus and the adorable fawn, "Hello sir. Is this fawn yours?" he asked in a somewhat quiet tone, as if not wanting to frighten the little darling.

The gaze on him had Blood Runner pause, looking to who or what had set their sights on him. Marcus was still focused on the horse, brushing out knots from the end of the mane and making sure the bridle was unbroken and polished. Ribbons in the horse’s hair, he’d never quite understood it. Braids yes, it kept a mane from flying into one’s face, ribbons? Frivolous. His old master had even thought such yet he’d never gone without them. The memory was a bitter sweet one. Marcus was oblivious to the ones looking at his guardian, but the tiny fawn was very much aware, and very much puffing out his little chest to look as proud and noble and ‘intimidating’ as a little guardian fawn could be.

At the addressing of ‘sir’ Marcus didn’t initially respond, not until Blood Runner went over to give him a nudge, weaving between the horse’s legs. Thankfully, the beast had already gotten used to the fawn’s antic of leg weaving. “Hrm, what is it now Blo- Ah.” Stopping his work, Marcus bowed his torso. The man’s clothing spoke of a higher station, or, of a man that was not temporary help. Old habits of his past lingered as Marcus realized he’d simply bowed on instinct. He wasn’t a slave, he needn’t bow so low. A simple bow of the head would do.

“I am not so much a sir but yes. He is mine. Or I am his. Depending.” The chosen looked to his guardian slightly amused as the fawn inched closer to Axe and Eluf. “He bites.” The tiny deer hopped in a circle at that as if to say ‘how dare you! I do no such thing.’ Marcus looked from man to deer and a small smile flicked across his face. “I hazard you belong to him. Will mine be an issue Sir?”

Unlike most who had wealth on their side, Eluf was not one to look down upon anyone regardless of their stature or status. And Marcus was treated no differently. The bow was a surprise though, but the young man returned it, not wanting to be disrespectful if it were the other mans customs. Axe, however, made no attempt to even look at the chosen, instead honed in on the little guardian, displeasure written all over his face. He could almost wear a snarl to match the sharp narrowed gaze...

Approaching closer, Eluf's pretty honey green eyes flickered to the horse that Marcus was tending too, giving a pat of approval to the broad snout of the magnificent beast, "You've done very well, thank you~" he praised the hired man. His attention redirected to the chosen and guardian pair, smiling sweetly to the little fawn, who was just too precious. "Oh is he a little teethy then? What might his name be?" he slowly lowered to kneel closer to the little ones level, used to dealing with animals of the hoofed variety, while Axe kept standing tall and intimidating. He was a strong, large guardian, his black coat shiny and accenting to the many ripples and bulges of the restrained muscle. A snort was given from how the babbin acted, in annoyance... kids these days...

Glancing up to Marcus for a moment, he nodded, "Yes, this is Axe. He's been my companion for quite some time now." he admits, "Oh, I've not asked your name, sir. I'm Eluf Torrell~"

A bow returned Marcus chalked it up to culture. It might have been a few years, but small aspects of Sunderland would always catch him off guard. It reminded him in a passive way how he was still a runaway, a refugee of sorts, only of his own making. Lost in his thoughts, Marcus didn’t notice Blood Runner’s eyeing of Eluf’s buttons. He might not bite fingers, (he did have to prove Marcus wrong however), but buttons about the size of berries? Those were worth attempting to eat. At Axe’s displeasure, the tiny fawn kept his chosen between him and the older guardian. ‘Neener neener your chosen wants to give me attention not you’.

All Marcus got from the fawn was a sense of smug superiority. A feeling he got often enough from the new guardian. The compliment to his work did earn a small smile from the dark haired chosen. “Thank you sir. I used to help tend to my er, my lord’s horses. It’s actually a bit nice to be in a fine stable working with such beasts again. City stables…” A shake of his head. “They never muck them as well they should. But he-“ a hand wave towards the fawn, “-is Blood Runner. Axe though?” Blue eyes went to the large buck a low whistle. “He’s a handsome buck to be sure. And Marcus Delacroix.” Looking around he found a semi clean rag, even if his hands were rather clean, it was still polite. Clean hand out, the man nodded. “It’s a pleasure Mr. Torrell. Didn’t know there was another with one of these boys around else I’d have thought to ask. It’s… odd with some employers.”

Thankfully Eluf was wearing his working attire at the moment... or else his dapper get up would hold far more buttons to entice the curious little fawn's stomach! Either way, the young man was tickled by how adorable the young guardian was behaving. Much like a spirited foal! But Axe... continued to frown in disapproval at Blood Runner... almost trying to sear him with his eyes, from the displayed taunt.

Eluf was able to tear his attention from the little cutie to stand up and give the man a respectful handshake, smiling with the exchange of introductions, "I thank you for all your hard work, Mr. Delcroix. I'm certain my parents do too. Day's like these tend to get rather busy, so extra hands are always appreciated." the compliment to his buck had a soft chuckle escape the reserved Eluf, "I thank you for such a compliment, though his nature can sometimes change that factor." he gave a glance to the stag as if to prove as much from how he was staring down the poor little Blood Runner!
"Your little one is quite spirited! And creatures of all sorts are certainly permitted on the grounds here. After all, we have so many ourselves." That's when an idea struck him, making his gaze lift to meet Marcus' , "Is he hungry, perhaps? What does he like?"

Blood Runner refused to play into the older male. No, it would bask in the attention of Eluf and look at the buttons and debate to see if he couldn't nick one to try and nibble on. Some humans wore flowers in their hair, just as some guardians wore feathers and bones and this and that. Something to chew on- was just something to chew on. Blue eyes went up at Axe, slightly challenging. He wasn't that scared. Maybe a bit, but the tiny fawn wasn't going to completely back down.

Marcus meanwhile was focus half on the horse, half on his employer. Hand shake given, the man relaxed a bit, hand running down the neck of the horse. "I enjoy the work. Keeps me fed and active." And going back to the taverns for this and that. Most this with a side of that. Women didn't care what a man looked like so long as he had decent coin. "And I try to be an honest man. Looks don't change with actions, not to me anyhow." He still cared and worried about his old master after all. What did that say about him?

Looking to the fawn, Marcus sighed. "Spirited, a good... word for him. Glad to know he's allowed though. A bit of brat he can get into trouble time to time. I've just told him no riling the horses. Don't need him trampled." The tiny deer would be crushed. At Eluf, Marcus shrugged. "He'd been nibbling on this and that- going out to try and eat some of the roses for the decor when I'm not looking. Hungry is... what he always is."

A respectable answer, thus it earned Marcus a nod in approval and understanding. Eluf was aware that not everyone was graced with the life of luxury as he was, nor did he look down upon those who weren't. After all, you cannot decide the life you are born into. His gentle gaze drifts to the horse that's received the other mans care, noting that it was indeed in good shape for the auction, and would indeed please his parents to see. They weren't terribly strict or harsh individuals, but they balanced a serious and realistic tone with their horses.

This Marcus gent seemed to be quite intelligent, which piqued the younger mans interest. It made him feel rather relieved to know such a person was in care of such a precious creature like Blood Runner. Looking back down to said fawn, he chuckled softly, "Well there's nothing wrong with that. Just signs that he will be strong when he is older." Eluf assured, smile growing with the consideration given, "I think they will find his youthful energy more so amusing than anything else." glancing up to Marcus, he looked down the stables, to a little closet that resided at the end, "If you will excuse me." with ease he glid down the stretch of pathway to reach said closet, opening it, and disappearing for a moment. He reappeared seconds later with a small little sac in town, untying the string and digging into the contents. A few dried berries were pulled out, dark in colour, but still holding a somewhat plump body. Kneeling back down before the fawn, he extended his hand flat with the wrinkled bits of treat, "How about these, hm?"

Axe, meanwhile, stared at Marcus rather intently now, as if expecting him to do something about how his fawn was acting... as well as making sure that the other man was acceptable in his Chosen's company. Golden eyes were very intense, unblinking as they boldy stared into the older mans, almost in challenge, and certainly with subtle threat. But with Eluf's return his gaze slid back down to the youngster, nose vaguely wrinkling at the presented treats.

Marcus looked from man to fawn a small snort of laughter escaping him before he caught himself, muffling it under a cough. “My apologies. But I don’t think he’ll be so much strong as well, either fat from eating too much, or just remain demanding to be fed as always. Just glad he can keep himself fed if I can’t get him this or that. Grain prices alter town to town far too much for being such a common thing. Bit difficult to save or splurge when paying to keep a little one content and happy.” Blue eyes went to blue. Guardian and chosen clearly having a moment of discontent and disagreement. After all, Blood runner only deserved the finest of foods. And treats. All of the treats. Marcus often got that impression.

So when Eluf presented the dried berries, the little fawn gave a tiny jump of joy followed by his tail flicking wildly. Bumping his hornless head to the man as a quick thank you, the young guardian was quick to begin nibbling away, much to his chosen’s amusement. “Well that certainly made him the happiest little thing. He can be amusing, I’ll give him that too.” Still, for all his gripes, there was affection lacing Marcus’s tone. He truly did care about the little fawn under his charge so to speak.

Once he looked up to see gold eyes- Marcus leaned back, brow raising at guardian. It could buck at him, attack him with his horns, try to trample him- but there was a horse near. Not to mention he doubted that Eluf would allow it. “Your’s doesn’t like me much I take it. Or Blood Runner. Cant blame him though, it must be a bit odd to have such a spry thing bouncing about your feet acting as he does.”

Eluf gave an understanding smile to Marcus, "Little ones are always quite eager with food. They are growing, after all." little Bloodrunner was given a look as well, smile lifting at the corners of the sweet young mans lips. Having grown up around animals all his life, from their birth to their death, the habits of the varying ages were well known to him. "I would suggest venturing to the forests for something that might suffice the young fawns bottomless stomach, but with the coming cold months ahead of us I am uncertain if it will be a fruitful venture."

There was slight surprise from Eluf upon the tiny buck's reaction to the presented berries, but ended in a soft chuckle lifting from the young master. How precious~ He stayed in his position patiently, placing a few more berries into his palm once the source began to run out for Bloodrunner, "If he gets hungry throughout the day, please feel free to give him some of the horses feed. We won't mind." he extended the invitation without hesitation. "A growing fawn needs his nutrients after all~"

Axe was remaining as stiff as ever, like a statue, only the barrel of his chests subtle rise and fall giving way to the fact that he was indeed live. When the guardian was prompted, Eluf looked up first to Marcus, then back to his steed, an apologetic expression shifting on his pretty face, "I apologize, he can be rather... unwelcoming to strangers." as if to prove as much, Axe's gaze narrowed even sharper, nostrils flaring to give a firm snort, "He doesn't get along with most anyone, beast or man, but I can assure you he is quite a kind buck... " he paused, "Perhaps just a bit guarded."

Grabbing a bush Marcus worked on the last bits of the horse’s coat, giving it that final glossy shine that they’d want to see. All that was left… well there wasn’t much left he could do. Dressing it up was more someone else’s job. He could saddle it up but with the whole showing off and fancy trimmings- Marcus was just doing what he knew. “He’s growing alright, keeps trying to sleep next to me on the road but then attempts to steal my bedroll. One of these days I’ll just get him his own if he keeps trying to wiggle his way onto mine in the middle of the night and shove me off.” Blue eyes of the fawn looked up at his chosen, innocent as innocent could be. Blood runner did no such thing.

“True though. All in all he’ll be fine. He makes sure he gets all he needs, weather I know it or not.” He might have caught the fawn attempting to sneak into a feed bag already. “But thank you for the offer. It’ll keep him happy and maybe a bit busy. If I’m lucky, he’ll eat himself to sleep.” Nibbling at the berries once more, Blood runner’s tail flicked back as forth wildly before he began to settle, happy to just have tasty things coming at him in what looked to his mind to be an endless supply.

Bush set down, Marcus gave a shrug as Axe snorted at him. “No harm done. Yet at least. Every… beast has their own personality. Though our boys are hardly beasts.” Looking back at Marcus, the guardian suddenly went back to his side, bouncing a bit, head butting for attention. “They’re special in their own right. Just a matter of… ah. Its hard to put into words. They just give off a certain feeling you know?” Like how Blood runner was now the most happiest thing ever. He got berries and Marcus was getting the impression he should stay. “This horse is done though really, need to move onto the next. Else I’ll get the whi-“ He froze. He wasn’t going to be whipped. He hadn’t been in a long time. “Chastised.”

He wouldn't say it aloud since... it might not be to appropriate to say, but the image of the petite fawn trying to snuggle up with his chosen was a very adorable thought indeed! Instead Eluf sufficed with a more broadened smile, and a slightly more affectionate gaze towards Bloodrunner. Axe was similar, in some ways, to where he would not allow the lovely curly haired man to venture to town on his own, or to go... just about anywhere without him! Inside his home was probably the only place that was excluded of such things. But the loyalty clearly seen in these guardians was something quite extraordinary.

"I'm certain a nap would do this little one well. Food and rest are both important ingredients~" he mostly speaks to Bloodrunner, in an effort to help encourage, and perhaps aid in Marcus not having to worry about the little fawn getting himself into too much trouble. His hand retracted as Bloodrunner returned to Marcus' side, and Eluf eased up to stand straight, his other hand stroking back some stray curls that had escaped from being tucked behind an ear, or the ribbon that held his loose ponytail together. The spare berries were placed back into the small sac with the rest, and tied up to preserve the freshness. Yes... more than beasts. "Yes, you're right." he responds softly, his own honey green eyes lifting to look to his own trusted companion, who looms over the lithe man protectively with that unyielding stare. A delicate hand lifted to caress the strong black neck endearingly, while the horse that Marcus had given care to was inspected. Nodding in approval, Eluf gave an understanding expression, "I don't think they'll be too hard on you. But I won't keep you from your work. It was a pleasure to meet the both of you. If you are in need of anything, please do not hesitate to ask." a polite bow was given again, to both fawn and man. Axe didn't show any signs of respect, but was pleased when it was looking that they would be parting ways. His eyes did lower to the youngling though, critically overlooking him, before turning to follow his chosen.
