May I ask what 'mochi' is? I might have seen it before, but the only Japanese treats I've ever had were pocky and ramune. Oh, and this cheese bun thing... (I can't remember what it was called to save my life, but it was good.)

Mochi is a Japanese rice cake. It can be made into different flavors. In America it is commonly sold at Japanese restaurants with ice cream in the middle. Yum!

The most delicious mochi I ever had came out of Epcot's Japan shop. It had strawberry jam in the center (no bean paste, I can't stomach the feel of bean paste on my tongue) and they were roughly the size of a small dinner roll. I regret not buying some to bring home but it was my first time flying and I was paranoid about food in my luggage even though it wasn't carry-on.
There's a Vietnamese market that sometimes sells bags of gumball sized mochi in various flavors. They have a "milk" one that I really like. And Whole Foods sells the ice cream filled ones but I find they're often freezer burned even when "fresh". I've always wanted to try a kinako flavored one, though.
I get stares at the frozen yogurt places that have mochi bits as toppings. Sure they don't taste like much but I love the texture and the chew.
