USER Name: Adam Terrani Age: 28 Magic Affinity: Earth. Plantspeak. Passive magic (?). He has fluency in the language of plants. He can use them to transmit messages. The first limitation is that it has to literally be a plant. It doesn't matter if it grows out of the ground and "looks like a plant", if it doesn't have cell walls, it doesn't count. The second is it has to be alive. The livelier, the better. A freshly uprooted plant could work, but when it talks, it sounds like it's screaming, so he prefers to use them as a last resort. Oh, and of course if the plant is killed before it delivers the message, thems the breaks. The third is it works best with the fewest plants used to transmit the message. It's really only practical if he tells one plant to tell someone else something. After about two plants along, it starts devolving into plant telephone game gibberish that just confuses whoever gets the message, really. Appearance: Personality: Perfectionist. Control freak. Inconsiderate. Can't get a word in edgewise. Defensive. Capricious. Scholarly. Diligent. Playful. Friendly. History: He was born to a family blessed with an aptitude for earth magic. Every generation had at least one family member who could go on to become a successful earth mage.
Unfortunately, in recent times, the family had been cursed by unfortunate circumstances.
One day, his father told him he was going on a business trip. This wasn't unusual. What was was the fact that he chose to take the side window instead of the front door.
After his father's death, his mother broke down. She carried on as if he was still alive. She quashed any mention of it and insisted he simply was on an extended business trip.
He was unaware this was abnormal until he began going to the academy. After talking to his classmates, he found out this was really freaking weird. Like the curious child he was, he asked his mother why she did this and not only did she not answer his question, she denied his father was dead, and put him on punishment. Similar things happened any time he asked about it. The only thing that changed subsequent times was how upset she became. Eventually, he quit bringing the subject up at all.
His mother pushed him to follow in his grandparents' footsteps and become a mage. She made him practice every day. She praised him when he did well and punished him when he did poorly or when he tried to get out of training. She wouldn't accept any excuse from him. Even sickness was no exception.
Because of this, he had incredibly mixed feelings about whether or not to practice magic. On the one hand, he genuinely loved her praise. He loved to see her smile. To have her hug him and say he was a good boy. On the other, he was sick of training. Literally, even. He would become so anxious that he'd frequently get headaches or nauseous. It wasn't so much the punishments that pained him than the thought that he had disappointed the mother, who he loved most in the whole wide world. There were days that he would love nothing more than to have a vacation. For the both of them to, really. Even a play date with the neighborhood children would be enough.
As a result, he grew to love the academy. It was an escape from magic training and he got to play with children his own age during breaks. He signed up for every after school activity available to stave off the time he had to spend on home, even if the activities didn't interest him or if there were time conflicts between them that made him habitually late for one of them. It was because of these school activities that he found his second love in life, the law.
Now, he wanted to be a lawyer instead of a mage. He felt like his parents had put all of their eggs in one basket with him and he knew his mother wouldn't like his decision. It tore him up inside. But he had never felt so alive as he did when he had his nose in a law textbook or when he debated with his fellow students and somehow won. When he found out there were people who did this for a living and actually helped other people by doing so, he wanted in on it. All earth magic had done -- for him, personally, not his mother -- was make him feel sick and alienated.
Before he went to school for it, he told his mother, with the expected results. He still trained during his schooling, but he took breaks during holidays and when he got sick.
When he became an adult, his mother began calling him by his father's name. She treated him as if he were his father, not her son. She replaced her delusion of her husband being a business trip with her son being too busy away at school to come visit her and her husband.
It was around this time that he also found out there was no need to pick from either being a lawyer or a mage. He could practice both. He didn't have to strictly adhere to his family's style that made him feel rigid, cold, and detached from the planet. He could do things his own way and feel whole again.
