Physical Description: A rather tall man by most standards, underweight by a large degree, as if he had been ill for some time and never quite recovered. Notable are his eyes, devoid of pupils as they are and completely red. These tend to be a bit unnerving at first glance and sometimes are mistaken for the eyes of a blind man from the way they don't seem to really focus on anything. Fefnir holds himself with a high bearing, as if he were constantly on display, only lapsing into his native slumping posture when particularly distracted, worried, or fatigued. His normal clothing consists a simple red haori and hakama with his sleeveless captain's coat over top of it. All of his uniforms, made from a special fireproof material, are very faded and worn at the edges from use, but he refuses to replace them, calling them 'lucky'.

Non-uniform attire: Fefnir sometimes likes to get out of his normal clothing, and when he does, he generally dons an outfit Aine once devised for him. It consists of a creme dress shirt left untucked covered by a black hoodie emblazoned with the symbol of Squad 2 on the back. On the bottom, he has red cargo pants sporting several chains on both side, and the pants are tucked into a pair of broken-in combat boots.

Personality: Fefnir is the kind of man who can and will make light of almost any situation in order to cope with it. His wit is razor sharp, and with an affinity for wordplay, it can almost be guaranteed he's got a comeback for that little verbal jab you were thinking of saying. Unflinchingly honest and with a particularly precise, if artful, way of speaking, the sting of his verbal blows is often mitigated by his charismatic delivery and refusal to shrink away from jokes slightly 'over the line'. This, and his tendency to respect the privacy of those he speaks to, make Fefnir a great confidant for those who are okay with his direct nature. He also has the rare ability to remove himself from a situation and view it as from the outside to mitigate most bias, making for a great overall advisor.

Don't mistake this almost easygoing demeanor for a lack of attention or understanding, though. Fefnir takes everything, even jokes, seriously and treats them as such. It's not in his nature to simply discard information of any kind, and his memory is very long when it comes to even the little things most others wouldn't recall. Though his body may respond in the expected way, the gears are always turning.

Decisive to a fault, Fefnir is very quick to reach a solution to most problems and doesn't like to change his mind. Stubbornness can be a blessing or a curse, and in this case it makes the red man a very steadfast and reliable person. When confronted, he’s also been known to turn that razor tongue into a merciless verbal thrashing machine.

Biography: "So here's how it all started, quite a long time ago. I can't even remember exactly how long it was anymore, but we're talking the span of decades. Back when I was freshly buried, hardly more than a month after my mortal form was burned away, I was already an outsider, hardly worth a passing glance to anyone. I was simply another rat in the streets to them, so like the rat I was, I would scurry away and hide from them for fear of a second death, but these was never any way to escape. They always found me... found me and beat me until I was absolutely dead in all but fact, all of my being covered with blood and bruises and horrible numbness and stillness. I think that was the worst part: that dreadful, awful, stifling stillness. I could never stand idleness, so to have it forced on me was a fate worse than I could imagine. It seemed as if the men took pleasure in attacking my legs particularly, perhaps because I always tried to run from them... But who wouldn't? I tried to be courageous and stand up to them, but my body and mind disagreed, and I would flee no matter how much I wished to fight back, time and time again."

"It was during this time that I learned to escape my persecution. Now, I had always liked to meditate, because it took the stillness after the beating and made it productive by focusing the mind, will, and energy, but this time, my usual thoughts were interrupted by a distasteful voice, full of haughtiness and scorn. 'You will escape.' it stated simply, deeply, almost divinely, resonating inside my chest with exactly what I wanted. An escape... That was my only response to what seemed to be an offer that would never be fulfilled. It occurred to me that I may just be dreaming shortly after that, but the thought preyed on me, that maybe there was some way to break this cycle, some way to get out of these slums. So I kept running, kept moving around my district, looking for any sign of a way out. Little did I know the way out would come to me."

"Sometime in the following weeks, I noticed that my hair, brown and unkempt, was starting to lighten, to become more auburn than chestnut, and then from auburn to varying and almost dyed colors of red. This was the first effect that spiritual power inside my body even existed. The beatings became more frequent and more vicious, my injuries steadily worse with less time to heal each time their sticks and rocks struck my body. That was the least of my worries, however; the fires were much more pressing. When I would show my face in a market, the stigma of my ever more devilish appearance would have me run out of the small square. Then, when my humiliation had almost finished, something nearby would spark, and there would be a rush to extinguish the embers and to get rid of me for good. I had no idea how the sparks would leap, much less if it were really my fault like they said. All I knew was that I needed to get gone, or I'd be dead."

"That is the last thing I remember outside of the walls. I think the presumed rioting was broken up by shinigami, and they realized I had untapped spiritual potential, thus bringing me into the academy. But I never asked too many questions about it. I won't look a gift horse in the mouth."

"So, I started the next day. As it turned out, I liked the classes I was taking, but I sucked immensely at just about all of them. I mean, some folks have a natural talent for stuff, but I was just terrible, especially at zanjutsu. It seemed like every time I made a slash, I missed, and soon I found out the reason (but not until after a nice beating by my opponent, of course): I make shallow cuts. That means less damage and easier to dodge cuts on my part, and weeklong openings to the all you can cut buffet, so to speak. Try as I might, I couldn't break that habit, though, so I had to learn to work around it. My speed gave me an advantage in nearly every situation, and my sword skills a disadvantage, so I about broke even, I think, and I had a pretty good W-L ratio to boot. However, there was this one guy in that class with me that was absolutely amazing. I don't think I saw 'im lose, not even once in the whole time I was there. It wasn't until later that I met that guy, though."

"So, I'm walking down the hallway, right, and all of a sudden, I turn the corner, and bam! I'm sprawled out on the floor there. It totally took me by surprise, so of course, being a little more of a hothead (no pun intended), I say to this stranger, 'Hey, watch where you're goin'!' and at first, all I get back is a squeak. Yeah, a little, tiny, minuscule, mouse-sized squeak. Such an answer. But yeah, I start helping myself up, and I realize this squeaky person is pressed against the wall, timid as can be, like he's scared to death to be near me. Being the kind, gentle soul I was back then, I say to 'em, 'Watch where you're ******** going!' and the guy squeaks again, so reach over and put my hands on this stranger's shoulders, only to have him squirm away with a little shriek that was sure as I'm standing here, the girliest thing I've ever heard. That was when I got a good look and connected the dots, and realized this was that kid from my class who was so great with a sword."

"Now, I'm not too proud of this, but as he's trying his best to melt into the wallpaper, I just kind of lost it for a second. This scrawny, tiny, weak thing has been taking his opponents apart with clinical precision, and can't even manage to say two words to anyone? I reached down and grabbed the front of his shirt, and when I did, "I threw out the first insult I could think of: 'Wouldn't have guessed you were a girl.' Of course the irony was that he actually WAS a girl, which kind of made the whole thing a little different. She kind of gave me this sheepish look, and from then on we had an unspoken understanding."

Zanpakutou Information

Name: Hitokageouji
Type: Elemental – Heat and Fire

Inner World: A vast desert marked only by the remnants of people Fefnir once knew. When Amie had come, she had brought grass and flowers to one corner of his lover’s mind. With his disappearance, they withered and died, leaving dry husks in the desert. Around the whole place, a wall had sprung up from Yuki’s pain and sorrow at the loss of Nagi, and his lashing out at his student had forced him to be above the emotional hurt she gave had. It was made of stone, and when inside, no sound could penetrate it. In the valley near the center, Xeion’s cheery disposition and philosophy had left wildlife around. Small animals like rabbits and other harmless creatures roamed and fed off the small bits of vegetation left, and his naiveté caused them to be the prey of coyotes, the skepticism that kept Fefnir jaded and unmoved by the plight of others. Hidden in that valley, there is a door, firmly shut and locked, which closes off a deep well of catacombs where all of the information countless hours of observation is stored in well sorted shelves, and a keeper of this knowledge stays within, always willing to help when he can. This keeper is modeled after Ryan Feldric, a tactician who always has his Intel prepared.

Zanpakutou Spirit: Hitokageouji is a black dragon with a red highlight, so depending on where you are standing when looking at him, he can look jet black or blood red. However, no matter where you look his eyes are always all-knowing and are a deep, powerful, red. Hitokageouji is more of the ‘Good King’, very regal and wise. He enjoys a good practical joke now and then, and enjoys riddles and puzzles even more, but that’s just the way dragons tend to be.

Sealed Form: A katana. The blade is housed in a red sheath and has a crimson wrapping on the hilt. The hand guard for this katana is a little aggressive, with the dragon and phoenix biting one another’s tail as they circle the blade. This sword is 32 inches long.


Shikai

Release Phrase: “Preside, Hitokageouji!”
Description: The sword becomes soul steel gauntlets reaching to the shoulder tipped with imposing four inch long metal claws from the fingers, and a set of bird-like talons of the same material around his feet, extending from the front and rear of his foot roughly six inches in front and four from the rear. The armor covers the arms and legs fully in cleverly overlapping panels of metal, so coverage does not impede movement, and allow very little in the way of a normal armor's weak joints. The extended 'toes' are designed to accommodate gripping in the style of the phoenix they're modeled after, and despite their seeming encumbrance to movement do not interfere with running. The claws and talons are extremely sharp, able to cut and pierce almost effortlessly.

Boosts: Mobility, Offensive Power

Techniques: The claws and talons are intensely hot, and their natural temperature cause severe burns on contact with the enemy and all cuts are cauterized by the heat. Damage activates on hit from the gauntlets or talons, leaving no chance to be hit by the weapon and have the heat not hit. Deals middling damage.

{火蜥蜴血 Hitokagechi - Salamander’s Blood} Upon the release of shikai, Fefnir’s blood heats to the point that tongues of flame can be seen licking at the sides of his mouth. In this state, his blood is now beyond the point of boiling, but is indeed burning. Additionally, his blood pressure increases, causing his veins to become prominent and starkly blue on his tanned skin. If Fefnir is cut, or punctured, the increased pressure his blood is under will cause the beyond boiling liquid to shoot from him in an intense spray. This is where the blood of a salamander gets tricky; upon exiting his body the intensity of the heat causes rapid cauterization of the skin, closing the wound shortly after it is accrued, but only at a rate applicable to the size of the wound. At the same time, his blood that is now airborne rapidly cools and becomes gel like in consistency and difficult to wipe off while it continues to burn until the blood matter is consumed in flame. Due to the extensive physical change involved in this release, Hitokagechi is one of Fefnir’s most taxing abilities.

{火蜥蜴吹 Hitokagesui - Salamander’s Breath} When an enemy is close, or within a striking range he can emit the blood in a fashion similar to the spitting of a cobra, and literally breathe fire. The flames tickling the sides of his mouth set the napalm like blood aflame and spread it in the iconic firebreathers’s spray.

{火蜥蜴げっぷ Hitokage Geppu – Salamander’s Belch} Similarly to the distraction created by an octopus or squid when they project ink, Fefnir can breathe out large amounts of thick black smoke. The smoke accumulates in his body due to the burning of Hitokagechi, and has to be expelled at some point during the release. Fefnir typically reserves this expulsion, or other expulsions for close combat fighting, either for a quick escape or disorientation leading to an attack. This smokescreen can cover an area approximately fifty yards in any direction, and is difficult to see through.

Bankai

Description: The bankai is a dragon form. Imagine it like a costume, where the armored arms and legs stick out, and the long neck 'mask' is hanging off the back. From Fefnir's back, bony wings coated with flames extend 12 feet on either side, and on his shoulders, golden pauldrons shaped like dragon heads appear. A tail of fiery bone extends from the base of the spine some 5 feet behind Fefnir, and is fully mobile. Fire emerges from his legs, and the gauntlets and talons extend themselves to cover the arms, legs, and chest with scale mail, which does not hinder movement. A head, similar in styling to a hound (a sharply dropping brow that provides eyes on the front of the face with a long muzzle holding numerous razor sharp teeth) extends from the top of the spine/base of the neck perched on a serpentine neck 4-5 feet long and is formed of the fire. This head has the distinct advantage of providing a second set of eyes and enhanced scenting, though it needs conscious effort to differentiate the two viewpoints and to switch between them. The head is also capable of moving oxygen to Fefnir in cases where he cannot breath for himself. There are long snake-like fangs in the front of the mouth and angular teeth in the back used for crushing with about the space of two teeth between them. The flames have high density as they are limited in their area of effect by Fefnir's reiatsu shaping the dragon, and as such, behaves similarly to skin, hiding the bone from view and providing resistance to physical attacks launched against the dragon's form. This form is majorly a wait-and-react style anyway, so it functions primarily without movement. Due to the immense weight, Fefnir is constantly in a hunched over position.

Boosts: Defense, Offense, Physical Strength

Techniques: The head can use its teeth to bite foes, breath for Fefnir when the shinigami can't breathe for himself, and give a second point of view for sight and smell, with smell being much more powerful.

This is more of a power-based form for Fefnir, using the ambient heat and fire to repel attackers at close ranges. The flames can easily give severe burns just from the superheated air around the massive dragon, making close combat a painful proposition. The area affected is roughly ten feet around his release in any direction. [8/10, normal dodge rules do not apply, area of effect]

Hollowfication Information

Inner Hollow: The inner Hollow is a forest of burned out trees, still smoking and cracking as if the fire could kick up at any moment. When it speaks, the words are soft, like a whisper of wind through the branches, and it seems to be talking from inside your head. It merely conveys ideas and concepts, and the listener's mind pieces together the sentences from memories of similar things. However, it always uses the most hurtful possible ideas in an attempt to attack whatever is within its reach. It is immobile and ineffectual, so words are all it has at its disposal.

Mask: Shaped to funnel air around the head in the most aerodynamic manner possible, Fefnir's mask is the natural conclusion of his fiery theme, grey and ashen with red striations glowing on its surface in a wavelike manner.

Boosts: A fair boost to all stats, with mobility receiving an extra enhancement.

Appearance Change: When tapping into his inner hollow's energy, Fefnir's skin seems to be tainted by it, his skin growing as black as night with a scaly quality to it similar to a lizard. All in all, the look can be quite a shock when it's noticed since most of his body is covered by metal, cloth, or the mask itself.

Kidou: Fefnir, while extremely capable of molding and using his reiatsu, could never quite get his kidou spells to work properly in practice. Something about the rigidity of incantations and exacting methods of shaping energy always put him off, and so he doesn't like using spells.

Other:

Shunkou: Where there's freedom in just how energy will be moving, Fefnir can improvise and overcome. With his strong emphasis on hand to hand combat, this ability works incredibly well for him, adding an extra kick to his attacks.

Hanki: When it comes to techniques such as this, Fefnir really is one of the best equipped for learning and mastering them, and master he has.

Skills:

Hakuda Mastery - Hand to hand combat is Fefnir's bread and butter. Most of his abilities revolve around it, and accordingly, he has trained tirelessly to hone his already considerable talents. His decent physical strength allows him to overpower many opponents, and those he can't overpower he can outmaneuver.

Hohou Mastery - Fefnir has always had an innate calling toward speed based abilities, even having invented one of his own with no official instruction. If Soul Society were a symphony, Fefnir would be a virtuoso of the speed arts. Despite his height, he's more than capable of outrunning even the most well honed of opponents, and it allows him to quickly enter close combat, where he can do the most damage the fastest.

Fire Mastery - When it comes to the almighty flame, there's basically nothing Fefnir doesn't know about it. He'll be the first to tell you the melting point of some random metal or how hot something needs to be to combust. Since his abilities all revolve around heat and fire, Fefnir is also immune to the effects of it. As they say, when all you have is a hammer, everything begins to look like a nail. No one said you couldn't have a very versatile hammer.

Abilities:

Shukuchi (Reduced Earth) - Fefnir gathers reiatsu (spiritual energy) at his feet, wrapping it around them like a second shoe and coupled with his incredibly strong legs and fast sprinting, allowing him extreme speed and maneuverability. Named after a specific type of movement in some Japanese martial arts where one attempts to move into the opponent’s blind spot quickly in order to strike, mobility and misdirection are the name of the game. Fefnir is unable to shunpo because of the conditioning he underwent to prepare his body to use this move, and due to the mechanics involved, the speed of this move exceeds that of shunpo. He has permanently damaged his legs in order to attain such an ability, resulting in nagging, persistent pain.

There are 4 levels of speed, measured in steps:

3 steps- Slowest of the steps, Fefnir's body is almost transparent. Foot shaped divots appear where he steps, and the reiatsu is clearly visible.

2 steps- Second slowest of the steps, Fefnir is almost invisible and only the gleam of his zanpokuto can be easily seen. Rounded places where the ground has shattered mark every step. No reiatsu can be seen.

1 step- Second fastest of the steps, Fefnir is completely invisible to the untrained eye. Skilled swordsmen can still read his attacks. The shattered places in the ground are wider and deeper, but are hard to distinguish from the 2 step indentations. No reiatsu is visible.

True Shukuchi- The fastest he can possibly travel, Fefnir is gone almost before the opponent can realize it. It is nearly impossible to see, much less predict or parry, any attack launched. There are no marks left after Fefnir's steps. This is about 7.50 times the speed of a normal shunpo.


Ocular Shukuchi - A miniscule amount of reiatsu is used to make Fefnir's eyes more active and compensate for his extreme nearsightedness. It also aids his fast moving Shukuchi ability by allowing faster reaction times necessary for consistent high speed movement. This is characterized by the appearance of pupils in Fefnir's eyes. Usually the first thing done in any fight, activation is a subconscious reaction to stress. Due to the magical nature of this ability, it also provides the ability to see minor magical effects, such as enchantments on objects or passive magical abilities, as a light blue glow indiscriminate of elemental affinity.


Senda Kaisou (Flash Strike: Layer):One of the two specially designed Senda specifically created by Kamashiro Fefnir.

First Step – Twelve layers of reiatsu are tightly wrapped around the hand and forearm. The layers multiply the concussive force of strikes upon delivery, causing blunt force damage without aiding the speed of the attack. In the event of leg damage or an inability to get to your feet, this technique can be used as propulsion, essentially functioning as up to Three Step Shukuchi. With this technique, some or all blade damage can be mitigated via equal return of force, similar to Reverse Demon. The drawback of Senda Kaisou is that you cannot hold a zanpakuto or any other weapon held in the hand because the pressures of the layers bearing down would break fingers or crush other important features of the hand.

Fun Facts:

I Think, Therefore...: Fefnir reads a lot of philosophy, and his favorite philosopher is Nietzsche. It's rare to see him reading anything else, most days, but he also loves the Ender's Game series. His favorite book of all time is 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court'.

What Doesn't Kill You: Fefnir is covered nearly head to toe with scars of a great many varieties, most notably several claw shaped burns along his back and a wicked scar running from the middle of his chest to just below his belly button.

Is it Hot in Here, or is it Just Me?: Fefnir's native body temperature is somewhere upward of a thousand degrees, and so it's normal for a room to get a few degrees hotter when he walks in. He normally represses his reiatsu, the cause of this odd trait, in order to make others comfortable. However, he always has a fire going in his personal quarters, even during the summer, as he's never quite comfortable at lower temperatures.

Let Me Play You the Song of My People: Fefnir is a very accomplished musician. You name it, he can play it, and play it pretty well. His main focus is on cello, but he started out playing a trumpet. He's amassed a pretty expansive collection of various instruments and usually has them prominently displayed in his home/office.

What's in a Name?: The nickname Cocidius comes from an old Romano-Celtic god of the hunt, commonly called 'The Red One'. Generally, Cocidius was also equated with Mars as a war god. Typically Fefnir will introduce himself as Cocidius rather than his real name.
