In the small town of Jericho there lies a grocer, ripe for the picking. While most of the food has gone bad, it's still rich with supplies seeing as the occupants of the town are strangely no where to be seen.
It's a bright day outside, zero clouds. Unfortunately, the electricity is out inside, meaning one must venture through the dark unknown area to gather items, and it only gets darker further in. It's common knowledge by now that the Nightstalkers like to hide in the shadows. Though, there hasn't been much sight of any yet, so perhaps there aren't any here. It's probably a good idea to risk it and get the supplies anyways. Plus if one does come, you can just run out into the light, right?

Doc had made the mistake many made. She listened to the reports from her hometown in Chicago that said there was a safe haven in Texas. Unfortunately on her arrival to the state after months of travel, she only found the state overrun and abandoned. People leaving Texas only spoke of there being a safe haven in the north. She came across a man who called himself by some city in Florida. He told her that people in the north say the south is safe, people in the south say the north is safe. No where was actually safe. So she decided to head back up north. At least get to Canada, maybe Canada hadn't been overrun. While many people tried to get Evey in their group as their medic, she turned them all down. She didn't like traveling with groups, especially after there was some problems in the last one she was part of. Most of the time she found herself cleaning up wounds caused by humans, rather than beasts. She did a lot of her traveling during the day, and tended to barricade herself somewhere away for the night, or sometimes stay up all night.
Doc's hatchet hadn't seen a lot of blood, as she did her bet to avoid possible threat situations. She wasn't so much living safely to keep herself alive, but she felt as if she had to stay alive for the people that she'd find dying on the streets in need of medical care. Part of her felt like it was her purpose in all this, to help with what she could. For some reason there weren't many wandering medics, at least, she hadn't met anyone that was part of the medical field yet. Certainly no surgeon. Since she never got all that hurt herself and didn't waste unneeded supplies on others, she still had a hefty bounty of meds with her. Holiday kept what she had a secret most of the time, in fear of people wanting to kill her for her supplies. She felt blessed to not have found the need to use her weapon on anyone who wasn't mutated.
At this point, she wasn't exactly sure where she was. She could have sworn she was in Kansas as she walked along the side of a dirt roadway. It was nice and bright outside. She could see something in the distance. It revealed itself to be a gas station as she got closer. A sign caught her eyes, "Welcome to... Jericho?" she whispered.

It was a secluded location, where invidious winds blew up small dust storms that spiraled into the air and danced in frightful unison, curling and swirling, blowing up flyers and rotting pieces of paper that had been left on the floor in the moments following day zero. Overhead, a sign flickered as the electricity that powered it dwindled down and left it in its death throes, its electric whirring the only other sound apart from the sad sighs of the rolling wind. This place had once been full of life, or had displayed the signs of life in its inhabitants who came and went, shopping in the various stores that occupied the bazaar. These people no longer frequented this location for its offerings of snacks and cheap clothing, but rather occupied it because it provided refuge from the searing touch of sunlight, which burned their skin and left them as charred corpses if they were sufficiently exposed.
They remained in constant hibernation until the fall of night, dwelling in the heimal chill that accompanied their reclusive hiding places. Their heartbeats faster and their bodies remained in immutable motion as they produced as much heat as possible to combat the coldness that lingered around them. Their feral mouths remained closed until dark, when they would feed. And when they fed... They were ruthless. Most of their humanity had been lost, replaced my monstrosities that practiced extreme violence and prowled the darkest places of the world. These... humans--if they could still be called that, were the victims of an all-encompassing plague that brought about the end of the world as Martijn had known it.
He watched the passing twisters with a morose expression. His face, marred by dirt, tracked the dust storm as it traveled across the bazaar, taking its paper convoy with it, which buffeted signposts and cracked doors, some of which were perforated with bullet holes, indicators of the futile last stands of those who used to dwell inside. He shook his head, pulling up his gray hood. The day was still young, but that fact gave him little cause for cheer. What was there to be happy about in this world? Life had lost its luster to him, and there was no one around to paint a happy canvass in this world of timeless monotony.
He sat atop a pile of rubble, his bare legs resting against its rough surface. The jagged edges of stone cut into his skin, but he no longer seemed to mind. In his lap, resting horizontally, was his double barrel shotgun, which he used to ward off the infected. He'd been in the town for weeks, finding not a single soul. He was beginning to believe that he may be the last soul in the world and everyone else were living husks that stored demonic creatures that craved the destruction of the world and eradication of the human race. Martijn had to fight the urge to succumb daily, but the prospect of just letting go continued to become more pleasant than the prospect of struggling to survive in a doomed world where he was the sole survivor.
He sighed, digging his hands into the pockets of his hoodie. He wore no pants or shoes, sticking instead with his boxer briefs and flipflops. He'd gone months without seeing any other survivors, and doubted that there were any left to judge his appearance. He had lost his pants running away from the Infected, and his shoes were torn to shreds during his previous cross-state trek. Martijn still practised stealth, but only against the Infected. Once, in a better time, he'd been nearly a ghost, unnoticeable in even a small crowd and that had helped him to survive. Survival came at a price, however, as he became distrusting of others, knowing from experience that when things got rough, they would stab him in the back to save their own lives. Martijn was starting to regret surviving.
Standing up from his reclining state, Martijn took a walk around, making sure to steer himself away from the darkened areas in the town. He made his rounds, looking for food and supplies, coming up mostly empty handed. He wasn't short on supplies, seeing as he'd stockpiled as many canned goods as he could and ate sparingly to ensure his own longevity. As a result, he'd lost some muscle mass, but since he was better fed than most people he encountered, it wasn't too much of a deal.
Martijn looked up at the skies, bright blue with lofty clouds floating lazily in the direction of the wind. When once he would have thought of this as beautiful, he only saw a grim reminder of a past world that would never come back. It was a mockery of sorts, that the skies remained completely untouched whereas the land had truely become hell on Earth where demons stalked the night. Martijn, looked down, his blue eyes filling with sadness.

Walking slowly, machete in her right hand, Zoey looked around, seeing if there was any signs of other people besides her and Crow. The two had been sticking together since they meet at the abandoned house, the place she decided to take refuge until she was prepared to go on her own. Luck was on her side when he arrived, and the two agreed to team up since their skills were similar and they wouldn't hold each other back. Secretly, though, Finch felt she would hold the man back, since she had a hard time raising her weapon to hurt anyone. Granted there hadn't been a real chance for her to use it, since she was rather far out from anyone, even the creatures of the forest. Shaking her head, trying to get rid of any thoughts that bogged down her mind about hurting anyone she looked at her companion, wondering what was going through his mind. One thing she liked about him was he was blunt and to the point, he didn't dance around trying to be sensitive, unlike her, who had always done what she could be please people. Maybe she'd be able to pick up some of his bluntness.
Looking over to Crow again she smiled brightly, trying to make it seem like she was doing fine. Honestly she was, since it was day time Finch knew the only real threat would be going into the shadow or other survivors that would kill them for their supplies. If they wanted what she had she would hand everything over excluding her machete, knowing she would be able to find more to live off of. She knew Crow wouldn't feel the same way, and would fight to keep what they had, another benefit of her going with him. He was able to say no unlike her, a feature she greatly admired and would try her best to take some tips from him even if he wasn't aware of it. Looking back ahead of them she sighed, searching her mind for some sort of small talk. Finch was never good at small talk, since she wasn't around people most of the time, and really, in this situation what was there really left to say? Biting her lip she looked back to him, smiling slightly.
"We picked a good to head out, don't you think? At least it's not raining and the sun is out. Absolutely no chance of them coming out, right?" The last question was meant as a rhetorical one, knowing full well that even if it was raining they still wouldn't risk getting burned just to get to two people the could always get in the night. Still smiling she wondered how much longer it would take for them to get to the grocer, a place she was actually excited to go to. They were running low on supplies and rations and what grew around the house was scarce, meaning it was time for them to find some place new. Since she had never been to an actual grocery store she was nearly bouncing on the balls of her feet in excitement to go to one. Sure, the odds were against them that there would be much non-perishable foods left for them, but it was still worth a look.
In a short time the two entered the town of Jericho, or at least what used to be a town. Now it was just an empty shell of what used to be of people that lived happy, normal, lives, a life she never knew herself. Looking at the empty building she wondered if they were really empty, or if there were creatures watching from the darkness, waiting for the sun to leave so they could take control of the night. Clearing her throat, she tried to ignore the pitted feeling in her stomach, the feeling that she knew they were being watched and would rip them apart when they got the chance. Moving closer to Crow she lightly grabbed the hem of his jacket, trying to block out any dark thoughts she was having, trying to hide the fear. Her heart nearly jumped out of her chest, causing her to stumble back, when she saw movement down the street. For a brief moment she had forgotten they creatures don't go out in the sunlight, but she quickly remember that as soon as she reacted.
For a moment Finch felt embarrassed, but that quickly went away she it struck her that there were other survivors, ones that were in town. Tugging on Crow's sleeve she pointed towards the person just down the street. She knew he saw them already, but felt the need to point anyways. "Crow, another survivor!" It was clear she was excited, and before he even had a chance to respond she ran down the street towards them, not even thinking they could be dangers out. As she neared him she waved her machete free hand in the air, yelling to get his attention. With in a couple of feet she noticed it was a boy, a boy that wasn't wearing pants. This stopped her for a moment, not because she wasn't used to seeing pant-less men, but because it was a weird attire for the apocalypses. Dropping her arm to the side she approached the man, noticing there was something familiar about his face, but brushed it off right away. Smiling she waved. "I didn't expect to see anyone here." The possibly this guy could be a threat escaped her, only excited to see another survivor.

It felt sort of odd to Crow having another by his side as he traveled. Ever since the attack in Arkansas, he had been traveling alone and without much of a purpose. The way the days and nights dragged on, it felt like forever since then. And yet at the same time it felt like it happened just yesterday. The one he had come to know as Finch had kept him company on his journey northward since their meet at that abandoned house. She wasn't all that bad at keeping up either. To be honest with himself, it was a comforting change of pace now that he knew there was a shot other people had taken refuge and possibly survived. Vergil looked to his side just as Finch smiled at him. It only made him wonder what was on her mind. He was always thinking, always trying to keep himself ahead of the game. It hadn't occurred to him to take a break and just spend a moment to relax. With the way things were now, there was no such thought. With an awkward half-grin, he responded to her kind gesture.
She seemed to go off into her own little world for a brief moment after that. Things were rather quiet between the two of them for the day. Crow wasn't the most social of people when he was on the move. His attention was always on his surroundings and he was always keen to hearing any potential dangers that may be lurking closer than they'd anticipate. Day travel was far different than night travel. At night, it took extreme guts to move around since "they" were waiting. But with the light of day there was never a problem with those monsters. They'd shrivel into nothing if they stepped foot into the light. That made things easy. "We picked a good day to head out. Don't you think?" The broken silence had almost startled Crow as his dull-colored eyes returned to the girl beside him. She was making light conversation. Was she feeling lonely from the silence? He guessed it made sense. Having someone around but being absolutely quiet was about as meaningful as having no one there at all. "At least it's not raining and the sun is out. Absolutely no chance of them coming out, right?" That was a rather silly question. But Crow had a feeling that she already knew that to be right. "Yeah..." he retorted. To be honest, he didn't have a clue of what to say. It sort of came subconsciously. "We've got plenty of time to get some distance." Things had slowed down a little bit since he had come across Finch. There wasn't as much night traveling as there was before. He wanted to keep her safe and even though she was light on her feet there was always that chance that "they" would spot them if things went wrong. At least she was good at climbing trees. If ever something happened and they needed a quick escape, those things never seemed to be all too good at climbing up a tall tree. It was a really gutsy move to make, but it was something they've had to rely on once before.
The skip to his female companion's step hadn't dissolved since they had seen the signs leading them to their current destination. Not far from here was a general store and that meant there'd be a chance to restock on supplies. Sure, they were able to scavenge for things here and there whenever they stumbled upon a house, but finding good quality materials was always more of a guarantee at a store than it was at just any old house. By the looks of it, this town was downright dead. Figuratively and literally speaking. It looked like a complete ghost town. Every place the two of them had visited thus far seemed to have this kind of imagery to it. Dust was drifting around their ankles like fog. The buildings they passed had broken windows and glass littered the sidewalks. Hell there were even pools of blood here and there. It was like some demented artist had used this place as his playground. Vergil couldn't understand how so much could change in such a short amount of time. It was horrifying to say the least.
With a setting like this, there was no way these constructs could be empty. A dark and chilling vibe reeked from the shadows within and Crow couldn't keep himself from looking in. The only thing on his mind had him cringing in anticipation. What if they're in there? This was all wrong. He didn't want to stay here longer than he needed to. About to stress his awareness to Finch, he had turned his head in her direction. But before words could be formed, she had interrupted his thought process. She tugged on the material of his shirt and pointed, practically bouncing up and down from the energy. Excitement had sprinkled all over her voice as she chimed a happy string of words. "Crow, another survivor!" Wait, what? Squinting his eyes to where she had laid her finger, his vision had caught glimpse of someone walking out in broad daylight. From where they were standing it didn't seem like one of "them". There'd be no way it could survive with this sunlight. But... where were their pants?
Immediately, Vergil had begun weighing out a plan of action. There was no telling if this person was hostile or friendly. They couldn't read his face from this far and he wasn't by any means trusting of what they'd do. "Is that... really someone standing there?" Despite his controversial views, it was still difficult to believe that there really was another out there like them. Whether their intentions were good or bad, they had survived so far. That alone meant they either knew what they were doing or they were just lucky. And then it happened. Finch ran off to see who it was. Crow reached out his hand and whispered loudly, knowing that there'd be no getting her back despite his efforts. "Finch! Hold it!" God... sometimes she was too quick to act. One of these days it was going to get her into some serious danger. The brunette wiped his bangs away from his eyes as his fingertips brushed the fabrics of his face mask. Even though it was daytime he had kept it up to cover himself. It was a sort of comfort to him he supposed. Watching from a safe distance, he went to reach for the pistols hidden in his leg pockets but thought carefully. The gun shots in a hollow place like this would echo. If this guy wasn't alone and there were more nearby they'd be after them. But Finch could be in trouble. Crow reached behind him and grasped the hilt of his machete firmly, taking it from its sheath as he held it at his side. Why can't you think things through? he scolded to himself, wishing he had made a better attempt at stopping his companion.
His approach was slow, subtle, as he watched the both of them with keen eyes. The closer he got, the more detail he could see of this man. There was no reason to overreact but there was no reason to underestimate either. Who knows what this guy was thinking, what he was capable of. His only thought was to get close enough to Finch to pull her away if he went to swing at her. But as he looked a little more carefully at the man's expression, there was a halt in Vergil's plan. This man was burdened. It sort of reminded him of how Finch cried when they had first met at the abandoned house. How would he react to seeing the both of them? As of right now, Crow had nothing to say. His hand remained right where it was, machete in tact. He wanted to know more about this guy. How did he get here? What was he looking for? Were there others? Perhaps he'd have the luxury of finding out sometime soon. Maybe not through his own voice, but through Finch's. She was better with communicating than he was.

The sun was hot.
Those were the first words that came to Martijn's mind as he paused in front of an abandoned establishment, whose sundered walls and cracked frames lent to a feeling of destruction that was oft radiated in this post-apocalyptic wasteland that he now found himself in--or rather, still found himself in. After all, it had been two years since the first of the Infected had sprouted up and spread their disease. The first weeks must have been the most horrible, he thought, as he paced back and forth in front of the store. His hands were clasped behind his back and the combined sweat from his palms pooled in the cradle of his intertwined fingers. His shotgun--along with his backpack--that he nearly always carried on his person lay against a sparking lamppost. Beside it were a faded set of bones, human, with ripped sunburnt clothing clinging to it frailly, threatening to be carried away by the wind, whose powerful gusts did little to placate the fury of the harrowing sun. It was one of those things that he really hated about the world. At night, the Infected roamed freely and any survivor caught in the open was likely to die. However, the Infected were weak against the light, because for some reason that he did not understand, the light burned them. Therefore, in order to escape the Infected, one must submit himself to constant exposure to sunlight whenever he travelled. Walking in the shade was no good, as the Infected could pick someone off very easily with minimal damage to themselves. This made it excruciatingly hard to travel, especially now that the sun had decided to shine the brightest its ever shone in recent memory.
He looked up at the glowing orb briefly, his luminaries burning as his vision erupted in a flash. He recoiled, clutching his eyes. That was not a good idea... he thought with a groan. His eyes throbbed and he could feel an oncoming headache. His vision was blurred from his exposure to the sun, so Martijn had to fumble around to reach his double barrel, which he used to steady himself by placing it upright and shifting his weight on to it. The sun continued to flare, and a sweat bead burst from the nape of his neck and slithered down his back. He could feel the coolness of it even as he swooned.
Reaching down for his backpack, Martijn was about ready to depart when something caught his eye. Movement. He strained, his recently disturbed pupils struggling to focus on a single location. Where had the activity originated? He scanned the outlying streets and the stores that were arrayed before him. His sight was continually marred by bright white spots, which lingered as a side-effect of his stupid decision to glance at the sun. He reached up and formed a visor with his hand, briefly shielding himself from the star's frequent condescending glares. "There..." he muttered, falling to a crouch. Two figures, blurred but apparent, lingered beyond the the penumbra of a crumbling building to the left of him. He saw one of them wave, though the words that accompanied the gesture were lost in the rolling waves of the wind. His crouching had come out of habit, but his eyes were wide and he expressively exhumed excited shock. Survivors! There are others... I'm not... He stopped, shifting to the left. His flipflops induced a small cloud of dust as he slid across the dirt. His survival instincts were kicking in. They were armed. He told himself that he would start to trust people again but he also told himself not to be stupid. It was two against one, and he had lots of food. If they were starving, they would not hesitate to kill him to take his supplies. He'd witnessed it happen before. He fled into the store as the pair made their slow approach. The immediate coolness of the grocery's shadowy interior struck him and he sighed at its touch. He looked through one of the cracks of the window towards the pair. Faintly, he could make out some of their features. One of them, a male, was dark-haired and wore a face mask. That, along with the machete he gripped in his hand, made Martijn immediately classify him as dangerous. He walked with a sense of caution that he himself understood. He figured that this man was much like him in his survival habits.
The other was a woman, also dark of hair. She carried a machete as well, though less ominously than her partner. She seemed a lot more innocent than most survivors that he had seen. More untainted by what the world had become... Martijn wanted to admire her, but this could all just be an act to lure him out into the open. Instead, he watched her silently, shifting horizontally down the room as they continued to approach. As he did so... He began to feel strange. A feeling crept up his spine, something he hadn't felt in a while. When was the last time he'd seen a girl survivor? He could not remember. In fact, before this event he was starting to forget that girls even existed. So when he found one at such a random time, he was bombarded by feelings that his mind was no longer capable of understanding. And after a while he began to realize that he found this girl attractive, and in doing so, he started to feel self-conscious of the attire that he wore. He glanced down at his boxer briefs and at his flipflops, whose former colours were displaced by light brown stains of dust.
He shied away from the window, shaking his head. The room darkened as he backpedaled. He needed pants. He shuffled through the aisles, frantically throwing aside boxes of ruined food and kicking away the objects that littered the floor. He moved further inwards. There had to be an aisle that contained clothing somewhere. He just needed to find... "Hssss..." Martijn froze. He turned around slowly, the hair on his back rising as he began to felt the chill that suffocated the surrounding air. He stepped back. Struggling to hear the sound that he had heard just moments before. "Hsss..." He shot a glance towards the direction behind him. It was the same noise, but it had come from a different location. He scrambled towards his pack which lay several feet in front of him and grabbed the shotgun that was lying next to it. Keeping his eyes on the consuming darkness, he reached his free hand into his pack and pulled out a small flashlight. He flicked it on and off and what he saw nearly made him faint.
In front of him, a family of Infected stood hunched over, their bodies rapidly rising and falling as they breathed. Their pale skin was stretched over their backs and he could see the outline of their spines. Their arms rippled with muscles. They were still sleeping so Martijn stepped backwards, rather wide-eyed. As he did so, his foot landed upon a plastic container which produced a sharp crack upon breaking. Martijn froze. He heard movement. He heard sounds. A faint shuffling of feet, a single grunt, and then finally a roar. He flashed his light again, and this time he was met with open, murderous eyes. They glinted at him darkly, and the fury they contained seemed to cause the room to shake. He stared at them for a moment, frozen with fear. The Infected stepped towards him, and Martijn stepped back. He saw them grin. He saw their muscles stiffen. He saw their legs bend. He saw them preparing to pounce. And then he began to scream.
He fired a single shot, and then darted towards the distant exit, desperate to reach the light. He could hear the Infected's heavy footfalls as they charged towards him. Martijn shouted desperately for help. He began to pant, glancing backwards on occasion and seeing nothing but the dark. If help did not come, he would surely die. He did not want to die. Not anymore.

Doc found something interesting inside the gas station. Gum. She wasn't sure when the last time she came across any gum or mints. She reached over, staying in the spot lit by the windows with hatchet in one hand and grabbed a few packs, eyeing the expiration dates as she stuffed a few into her pockets. Then she heard something, a faint noise, but she wasn't sure what it was. Holiday tilted her head to the side, heading back to the door which was propped open by her pack. There was something weird about this town. Everything was unlocked. It was like they'd just stopped right in the middle of their daily routine, but she kept seeing cars... so where did they go?
There it was again, louder this time, and followed by a pop. Doc scooped up her pack as the sound registered to her ears as screaming. She threw it on as she ran practically dragging her weapon behind her. Part of her would feel dumb later for charging into town towards the noise. For all she knew it could be humans fighting humans, and she'd be throwing herself into some horrible situation. But she couldn't take that chance. The change that she'd be ignoring helping, saving someone who would suffer the horrible feeling of having those things burrow into their body. Still, she ran.
She didn't think it was so far into town until she was actually heading for it, for the screaming. Her orange bun bouncing around with each stride. She neared the back of a building, a window was busted and she could tell that was where the noise was coming from. This back alley of sorts seemed like the drop off for goods to a grocery store. She rushed to the backdoor, and again, found it unlocked. Doc didn't even have time to ponder why before she practically threw herself into the building. Holiday hoped the screaming had drawn the creatures to the person, if they were the creatures, that way she didn't have to worry about being jumped on. She continued to run towards the sound until she skidded to a stop. Holiday found herself standing behind one of them. The hideous Nightwalkers. It's back was bare, and covered in sores. She raised her ax, a bit put off. There were others, but they were all paying attention to whoever they were after to notice her. Must be feral. Doc crept up, a bit nervous about what would happen as soon as she struck, but she kept going anyways. The guy must have been reloading his weapon, or something. She didn't know, she couldn't see around the creature.
Doc brought her ax down as hard as she could into the Nightwalker's spine. It let out a horrid screech, and all the others scattered back towards the dark at the sound of it. She tugged and pulled until her ax was free. It collapsed, writhing around on the ground. But how long until the others came back? She rushed over to the male, not noticing he wasn't wearing pants. Evey tugged at his arm trying to help him up and drag him along at the same time, "come on!" she cried. If he was hurt it was far to dark for her to notice right now.

The sun beat down unforgivingly, as if trying to show that no matter how badly the earth was ravaged, it would remain untouched. It had been a while since he had felt heat like this, and it wasn't a feeling he enjoyed too much at all. At least back at the cabin, there had been shade. Here, there was only the sun. The sun and death. He sighed as he tried to ignore both of them, though he knew that was practically an impossibility. The sun was life, a cruel, burning, tormented life filled with horror, true, but life nonetheless. The darkness… that was just as cruel, just as horrifying, and much more painful, but over so much quicker. When it really came down to it, he knew that there was only one real choice. After all this time, and the horrors he had seen, he had to go on, to see this through to the end. Otherwise everything that had come before would be in vain. He sighed, not wanting to turn over, but being too uncomfortable as he was.
He was laying face down on top of the building, using his arms as a makeshift pillow to keep his head away from the hard building beneath him. He lay on his stomach, trying not to look at the sun. He liked sleeping during the day, though he knew that some would find that more than strange. At night, they moved around, hunted you when they could, killed you when you fell. At night, you could never be sure that you had found a good enough hiding spot. You could never get a good night’s sleep due to the horrible sounds they made, the screams if they found even one victim. The thought would have made him shudder, had he let himself dwell on it. He hadn’t heard that screaming in a long time, and he didn’t want to relive it, in his mind or in this hellish place. During the day, you were safe. There were no monsters waiting just outside your vision to snatch you up when you turned your back. So long as you slept in the sun, you didn’t have to worry about waking up to the excruciating pain and the sound of your own intestines being torn out of you by monsters with ravenous eyes and screeching wails. You only had to worry about the other monsters: humans. He hadn’t seen any of them in a long time, at least a few months. He had avoided them, knowing them to be more dangerous in their own way than these…. Things. He shook his head, not wanting to think about it.
As he lay there, his mind drifted off to the things below him, hiding like bats in a dark cave. Had he been a humorous man, he might have made a comment about the fact that their own prey had created their shelters for them, but he was not, so he stayed silent. He could practically feel them moving beneath him, hear their noises. They sickened him. He had thought them mindless beasts at first, who attacked anything that still drew breath. He had hunted them, at first, as silly as that seemed now. It had been pretty simple, since the ones that came to his cabin came either in small groups or by themselves. It hadn’t been too hard at first, the easiest prey was one that didn’t even consider the fact that something out there could harm it. But things had gotten harder, and as much as he wanted to deny it, he had been forced to recognize the fact that these things…. learned. After a while, they had started to try and hunt him. They weren’t very successful, but the fact that they had tried had given him cause to give them a new name. He called them Stalkers. Hunting them outright became too dangerous, so he had reverted to protecting the area around his cabin. That much, at least, he could still do. After he had decided to see how far along things had gone in the outside world, he had stuck to moving at night when he could, and had found almost nothing but infected. Nothing but hopelessness no matter how far he travelled. When he came across this town, he had found them wandering about as normal, not noticing him. He had used the opportunity to sneak up here and had spent the rest of the night waiting for them to notice him and rip him to shreds.
He had a plan; all he had to do was wait until nightfall before making his move. As soon as they were all around mingling in the town, he would sneak into the store and gather as much supplies as he could. They didn’t seem to like being cooped up, and whenever they got the chance, they went outside. There were a few exceptions, of course, but that was to be expected. Besides, even then the number was pretty small, and those, he was sure he could take out silently before they could let out one of those terrible screeches. It wasn’t the best plan, (in fact, it was a pretty stupid plan) but he was going to run low on food soon, and this was his only option. All he had to do was wait patiently. This was simply another hunt, and if he rushed in like a pantsless idiot in the middle of the day, he would be eaten alive for sure. It wasn’t as if he had something to lure them away while he went around and gathered up supplies. Besides, if there was one thing he had left, it was patience. He could do this. He had to keep telling himself that. It was the only way to not want to shoot himself and not have to deal with this anymore. He closed his eyes and tried to dream of the food that would come his way once he got inside. Like twinkies. He had heard those things lasted forever, which would be quite fortunate since that was how long it had been since he’d had one. He tried to drown out the noise coming from everywhere else and instead focus on the coming night. He thought he heard noises… voices maybe? But he dismissed them. There wasn’t anyone here, there couldn’t be. He had been alone here. The chances of someone showing up randomly were very low and getting lower every day.
That was when he heard the commotion beneath him; that terrible screeching. They didn’t do that unless they found something to kill. He froze, wondering If they had found him already, but that didn’t seem to be the case. He could hear someone else screaming as well. A human. This was bad, he had been waiting up here, cooking in the sun all day only for someone to show up and completely run everything Immediately irritated, he stood up, trying to figure out what to do. He couldn’t think of anything good enough. The only thought running through his head was how much he wanted to kill this person. But who knew what was going on down there…. He took only a few seconds to decide that he needed to get down there now. There was always the stupid way, which seemed to be the theme of the day. He looked over to the side of the building and went with the fire escape he had used to get up there in the first place. He sped down it as fast as he could, only realizing that there was a second voice in there once he got to the bottom: A woman. A man… A woman…. A child? He rushed to the entrance, dreading what he would find. He closed his eyes as he drew out the bow and reached for an arrow. s**t he thought as he reached for the arrows. He had packed the special arrowheads because he had only been expecting to deal with a few of them, not a whole building full. Well, he would just have to make do with what he had.
He took a deep breath and stepped inside the entrance, feeling the air suddenly get stale… dead. He opened his eyes, allowing them to adjust, something made only a bit easier by closing his eyes for those few moments as he came in, but every second counted. He notched the bow, taking aim, preparing for anything. He took a few slow steps inside, sweeping form left to right and back again, trying to take in the whole room, never stopping. The last thing he wanted to happen was for him to get killed while doing something stupid. It would be almost as embarrassing as being caught by one of those things on the toilet. He could make out a few shapes moving his line of sight through the darkness, a man and a woman, he held a shotgun, her an axe. He didn’t like those odds, but he couldn’t be sure about their intentions at the moment, so he let it go. He readied the arrow, drawing it back, prepared to release at a moment’s notice. It took him a moment to notice that the boy wasn’t wearing pants. Well, speak of the devil. He saw one of the monstrosities appear over the woman’s shoulder, and let loose. The arrow flew straight into the creature’s eye before it had a chance to do anything. The barbs in the arrowhead extended, killing the thing. It spent its last few moments in pain, writhing on the ground silently. That was one satisfying thing about today, he could kill them instantly and soundlessly with these arrowheads. He would have to conserve them. That wasn’t an option at the moment, and he was forced to notch another arrow and take aim, firing at the next Stalker that appeared in his sights. This wouldn’t go well for them if they stayed there, so he took a step back getting ready to bolt as soon as he could do so safely.

So caught up in the fact there another actual human standing just feet away from her all common sense went straight out the window. The fact that this stranger could pull a gun any moment and blow her brains out was very possible, but for some reason Zoey didn't think a man with no pants would be capable of doing that. Even if he did hold a gun in his hand. The words that Crow yelled to her didn't even touch her ears, getting lost in the low wind that was caught in this town. It wasn't until the stranger reacted that she realized she was doing something incredibly stupid, far more stupid than she normally did. Gripping her machete at the sudden movements of the man it took her a second to realize he wasn't going to attack her, but in fact hide. The guy must have been very brave, or very stupid, to run into the grocery store, since it was pitch black in there, even with the blaring sun above them.
Panicking Finch readied to run inside, but stopped before she even took her first step. She forgot Crow was there, that he would scold her for days if she ran in there blindly after some stranger. Turning around she saw the brunette male covered in black clothing making his way towards her. She sighed seeing he was holding his machete, noticing that must have been what sent the guy running. As her companion caught up to her she sighed, giving him a look. "I think you scared him off, Crow. They guy ran into the building. The dark building." Pointing to the store she looked to see if she could see the man moving in what light there was. She couldn't, causing her to become more worried. The scream from inside did not help at all, neither did the following gunshot that rang through her ears. Finch hated the sound of gun fire, but in this new world it was something that had to be heard.
Wanting to fun in her legs just wouldn't allow her to move. Even though another human was in trouble she knew if she went in there she'd have to fight, and fighting was something she wasn't good at. Useless, that's how she felt and it caused her to have doubts about how she even managed to make it this long in this world without be eaten alive. Literally. It was certain that whatever was in there with that man would tear him apart in second, that was, until a female voice was heard from inside. Taking a step towards the building Finch tried to see if she could see who the voice belong to, but they were too far in and it was far too dark for her to see anything. She hadn't even noticed the appearance of another person, another man, until he stepped inside the darkness.
This one seemed well prepared, as if he knew what he was doing, more so than the other guy who ran in blindly. These people had to be brave to go in and rescues someone. Of course, as far as she knew the three were traveling in a group together, but that didn't seem to likely. Not by the way the first man acted, running off like a scared child. Wanting to go in, to help the other two against however many were in there, she just couldn't bring herself to move. Turning back she looked to Crow, the fear showing clearly in her brown eyes. Taking a few steps closer to him she grabbed the hem of his shirt, holding it tightly. She did this for two reason. One reason was to feel safe, and the other was to make sure he'd stay with her and not run in their risking his life. The odds were against those people for them coming out unharmed, or at all, and she didn't want to loose the only companion she had. True, there were clearly more survivors out there, but who knew how long until she saw another one. Besides, Finch had become accustomed to having Crow around. Right now, though, she couldn't tear her eyes away from the darkness of the doorway. Hoping that those three come out unharmed.

The moment Vergil had gotten close enough to catch any sort of extra detail on the man they had found, he had taken off running. Stupidly so, he had vanished into the darkness of the store. God only knows what could be in there. The tense clamp he had on his machete had faded away and strange enough he was relatively calmer than just moments before. The only reason he could fathom feeling calmer was because confusion had distracted him. Why on earth would anyone run indoors in the middle of the day without any knowledge of what was inside? Whoever the hell this survivor was, he was either really gutsy or beyond stupid. As if to make the situation seem more obnoxious, his companion had taken a look back to see him and commented. "I think you scared him off, Crow." That wouldn't have been far-fetched. At first his black getup was just to make it harder for him to be spotted. But as time had went on and he really thought about it, it also worked as a perfect means of intimidation. This time around, though, Crow had figured another factor as to why the strange man with no pants had fleed into the pitch black store. He gave a retort to the young brunette, calling her out on her mannerisms. "You did just run at him, you know. That could've frightened him, too."
After the whole performance of this peculiar man running away from the two newcomers, things had gone dead quiet. Not a sound came from inside that store. There was no way to tell what was going on in there. There were a few wooden planks over the broken glass windows. That alone was enough to prevent anyone from looking in and getting a decent view. "Hss..." Wait... what was that? Vergil kept a very careful stare on what was in front of him. For a moment he glanced over to Finch. It wasn't just him that heard that, right? And then it happened. A horrific wailing and gunshots. The noise on its own had startled his partner and she looked around frantically as if she had lost sight of him. The darkly dressed brunette, on the other hand, stood frozen in place. Despite expecting something to pop up at them like one of those computer screamers he'd get pranked with from time to time, he knew that those monsters couldn't reach them this far out into the sunlight without deteriorating into dust. With this in mind, Crow reached his hand up and sheathed the machete in the strap held on his back.
The wailing had become less frequent, but now there was a different noise. The sound of loud footsteps and lots of them. The growling and roaring had rumbled like the bass buzz on an amp. The two of them may have been in a safe spot, but it was still rather close for comfort. Especially with how many of those things he was guessing were in there. As far as Crow was concerned, there was nothing they could do. The poor b*****d had set himself up for a quick and horrid death. But then something changed. There was another voice in there. It was confusing. He put his hand outward in front of his female partner as she made a subtle advance towards the store. Neither of them could see anything that was going on and the both of them were trying to focus. It was beyond difficult to really make out. All he saw were occasional movements of figures that ran in demented positions from behind wooden barricades that blocked out the sun's harmful rays. The voice was feminine, yelling out to whoever had gotten themselves trapped in such a sticky situation.
As if the whole predicament couldn't have been any luckier, someone else had swiftly made it by both Vergil and Finch. He drew bow and entered the darkness without even so much as looking back. Two things came to his mind. One, these people trying to rescue this one guy were crazy. Two, this one guy was the luckiest son of a b***h for having this many people around to help him out in such a crucial moment. Whoever had just gone in seemed to know what he was doing. Still, he wasn't about to run in himself to aid them. It would be careless to add another life to the list of people already endangered. But the least he could do was help them if they were to come back out. Crow had lifted both of his hands and went to reach down to his leg pockets, but was stopped as Finch had gotten close to him. She held on to his shirt and looked at him with fearful expression. She didn't want him to do anything reckless and he knew that. He did his usual gesture to reassure that they'd be fine. Placing a hand under her chin, he kept her focus on him. It was a sort of contact comfort and it seemed to work since he had done it the first time. She would know that he wasn't about to do anything stupid. "Get behind me." He imagined it looked weird to hear him talk without seeing his lips move. But by now she might be used to it.
Continuing where he left off, Vergil had leaned down and unzipped the pockets on his pant legs. With a firm clutch, there was a glare gleaming from what he pulled out as the sun beat down on them. Two fully loaded pistols. He managed to snag these beauties after a raid on a police station. He gave them a quick spin and pointed both aggressively towards the doorway of the store. To the male traveler's knowledge, it would be their only means of escape. With fierce concentration, he stood ready. There was still a bit of shade being cast by the construct itself. They'd try to follow them out before realizing it be best to retreat to the safety of the shadows. If it went that far, Crow was prepared to aid whoever had escaped from in there. That is... if they could escape. He kept himself in front of Finch. If anything went wrong, he'd be sure she remained unscathed. As far as he was concerned, their safety was more important. But if this gave them an opportunity to help someone else worth saving, Vergil was all for it.

The cold damp floor was piercing to Martijn's exposed skin. He met it with blunt force, tripped forward by a lingering rock detached from the rubble that covered the surrounding area. His wavering cry caught in his throat as he tumbled over to his side, fumbling the shotgun that he clutched so desperately in his hands. The creatures were nearly upon him. In fact, they were mere paces away. He could hardly see in the darkness but what little light that shone from the faraway windows behind him offered enough for him to see his executioner. Tall, with pasty white skin and a mouth rimmed with dagger-like teeth, his assailant stood threateningly over him. Its dilated pupils watched his frail backwards crawl with a glint of feral malice and it strode forward with a grace that seemed uncharacteristic of the animalistic hunger that dwelt within. It seemed almost to be mocking him.
Martijn's trembling stopped as he pushed backwards one last time with his feet. He held his gun, which he had forgotten to load, loosely in his hands as he awaited his doom. He closed his eyes, letting out a small sigh that brought forth a wispy mist which dissipated almost as instantly as it appeared. The footsteps of the Infected drew nearer and he could feel the floor tremble as it approached. The steady booms of its footfalls would have been enough to shatter Martijn's resolve had he any remaining. Both fortunately and unfortunately, he did not. He was simply consigned to his fate, and he hoped that his fate offered him a quick death. A bite to a vital artery. Or a powerful initial strike that shattered his skull and splattered his brain on the grocery's floor. Anything but an agony inducing meat fest would suffice for him and he lowered his head, hoping that his surrender would offer him the end that he desired.
However, the end did not come.
The sound of tearing skin followed by a splurch and then a thud as the body of the Infected hit the ground caused Martijn to push his eyes open. He'd adjusted, somewhat, to the darkness and could see the outline of the Infected face down on the floor. It's back was contorted, and it writhed like a worm in pain. He stared at it wide eyed and open mouthed. The other infected seemed to scatter at the sight of their leader's apparent demise and Martijn watched them go in a wondrous daze. Who could have possibly... He perked up. He'd shouted for help moments before. It must have been the people that he had met outside!
Before he could ponder further, a figure burst from the shadows. It lunged at him, grabbing his arm. It pulled him to his feet. Martijn stepped back, defensive, but halted as he realized that what had "attacked" him was not one of the Infected at all but rather his saviour. An orange haired girl whom he had never seen before. She pulled at him, urging him to follow her and he obeyed. He let her lead, eyeing the ax she held in her hand. Probably the weapon she had used to slay the Infected. He admired her for her strength, though a shrill scream told the pair that the fight had not yet ended, and Martijn twisted away from her grasp to meet their foes.
There were atleast four Infected lurking in the shadows, darting from behind one rack to another, their stiff bodies clanging on the metal and knocking over the items that the racks displayed. He quickly loaded two shells into the barrel of his gun and fired consecutive shots, catching one of them in the chest. It fell to the floor, loosing a shrill cry before becoming silent, a pool of blood extending from where it lay. Martijn smirked grimly. As he prepared to reload his gun with an additional two shells retrieved from his Ziplock bag, a second Infected appeared behind them, specifically behind the orange haired girl. Martijn cried out to her as the Infected made its move.
However, before it could sink its fangs, a streak of black cut through the air and embedded itself in the creature's skull. It fell to the floor in rigorous spasms before dying. Another fell to a similar attack. Martijn squinted, making out the shape of an arrow. He looked backwards to where they came from but could glimpse nothing. Whoever had saved them did not seem to want to reveal themselves, so Martijn grabbed the girl's arm and pulled her towards the exit. A couple of Infected followed the through the doors but they withdrew instantly as they were hit by a beam of light. Hissing, they returned to the darkness, their pale skin smoking.
Martijn, panting, looked towards his saviour, the orange haired ax wielder. He smiled at her, muttering a quick thanks before slumping to the floor, exhausted.

Doc tried to keep them moving towards the exit. The sooner they got out of the damp store the better. When he complied to follow, she moved as quick as she could for the doors leading out, taking a general guess as to where they were. The skittering of the Nightwalkers only following them out. Suddenly, the male twisted away from her and stopped, turning to face the creatures. She blinked a few times, unable to fathom why he would want to stop any fight when all they had to do was run out the door. Holiday slid to a stop on the laminate flooring, turning to see what he was doing, "the doors are right there!" she said trying to convince him to keep going. She hadn't ran all this way for him to try and be a hero just to get in a few more kills. People were always doing that. As if the number of creatures they'd killed tallied up to their personal value. But it didn't.
It didn't take his cry for her to realize what was behind her. She smelled it before she saw it. The horrible smell that comes only from the breath of someone who has been dining on raw flesh, rotten or fresh. Doc could feel a wetness on her shoulder, a warm type that made her squirm thinking it was drool from the creature. In reality she hadn't realized that it had extended an arm to grab her, it's nails tearing at her shoulder. Doc must have blocked out the pain immediately, or it just wasn't that horrible of a wound. She'd frozen up, there was no way she'd be able to hit it with her ax before it would bite her. Holiday squeezed her eyes shut, and started to try and hit it anyways. She wasn't ready to die, certainly not in here with someone she didn't know. As she was turning there was a whizzing that went right past her, grazing off a few strands of her hair. Doc's lips parted in shock. The arrow pieced the creatures skull, sending a small about of blood onto her face. Her mouth protected by her mask. She turned back to look at the man she was traveling with, only to realize he didn't have a bow on him. Her head jerked towards another creature as it dropped to the ground from a similar attack.
She wasn't waiting any longer. Holiday turned and darted out of the building alone with the male who was also running out now. Doc hadn't seen who the person who saved her was, but she hoped she would get to do so soon. The two burst through the doors. Her eyes immediately began to ache from the brightness of the sun, and she turned back to see several Nightwalkers run out after them, only to retreat as their skin began to burn. She watched for a moment, before turning to the male. He offered his thanks and she nodded, "don't... mention it." She swallowed hard, her mouth had gone dry back inside at the sight of one of those things so close to her.
Her reflex kicked in as he slumped to the floor. She reached out to grab him, but he ended up on the ground all the same. Evey knelt down beside him, "are you hurt?" she asked before eyeing him over and realizing for the first time that he had no pants on. She blinked several times and brought her gaze back to his. Doc pulled down her blood spattered mask with one hand. She wiped her skin with gloved hands, managing to get some blood off from around her forehead, and only smearing around some.
Doc did a quick glance around, tensing as she saw even more people. She raised her eyebrows. She hadn't seen this many people in one place in ages. It was quite shocking. Evey would have approached the other two, but she was busy making sure the male she'd just escaped with was alright at the moment. She'd set her ax on the ground beside them keeping her hands free in case he was injured.
Evey could feel a stinging coming from her shoulder, but she ignored it as she focused on the man with no pants. The wound on her shoulder was just five incisions from where the creature had brought it's fingers inward towards its palm against her back - as if it was testing her, teasing her. They were small, and would only need a bandage rather than stitching.

As soon as they were out of immediate danger, Anthony bolted out of the building. He didn't want to be anywhere near those things when they cam his direction, not when they could easily drag him back into the darkness. Inside, things could get rather messy. Once outside, he took a moment to catch his breath and allow his eyes to readjust to the sun. The warmth on his skin was heavenly, despite his complaints only a few minutes before. The warmth meant sunlight, and sunlight meant life. he could still feel his heart racing in his chest, and he could only close his eyes, savoring the small moment of life. The moment passed quickly as the others came running out of the building and he was dragged back to the hellish reality he lived in. Two of the runners made it out, marking them as human. The others hissed in pain as the sun burned them. The sound brought a moment of satisfaction to the whole situation, but just a moment. The whole situation angered him and even the sound of those things retreating back to their hole did little to comfort him. Had these people not shown up, the Stalkers would have never known he was there in the first place. This angry thought brought his attention back to the others that had appeared before him. There were now five of them waiting outside the building. One was practically cowering behind her partner, who held two pistols and a serious expression. The other two were on the ground, the girl looking after the idiot.
In all honesty, the number of people here surprised him. He hadn't seen this many people in one place in some time, and even then, he hadn't been part of the group. This took a moment to process, and as usual, he kept quiet. He didn't want to speak to these people, be associated with them in the slightest. He had learned long ago that other people only brought with them trouble and misery. Just look at what this group had already done, and he hadn't even spoken two words to them. He could only imagine what kind of trouble would come if he stayed with them for very much longer. He almost shivered at the thought. He didn't want to think about babysitting these children, making sure they didn't pull anything stupid. Anthony looked forlornly back at the building he had just abandoned. All the supplies that he might have been able to salvage, now forever beyond his reach. It was hard to hide the disappointment on his face. He had already been planning what he might do with the food and other supplies that might be within. He had almost been able to taste those twinkies. It had all been so close, only a few more hours of waiting and then there'd have been no scrounging around these dead cities for anything useful. At least, not for a while. Just a few items to reinforce what he already had. Who knew when he'd get another chance to get into a building like this? When there might be supplies he hadn't been expecting. Hell, this thing would have had some utensils, some paper, maybe even some food that hadn't completely gone bad yet. He thought of the cans of chef boyardee he had served Claire when she had been smaller. He suddenly had the oddest moment where his stomach and heart reacted at the same time. Hunger and sadness. Oh great, just what he needed now. He shook his head and looked over at the other survivors, his irritated gaze almost immediately landing on the boy. He sat there, no pants and a shotgun.
He walked over, trying with every step to refrain from strangling this pantsless lunatic. As he moved, he gave the swiftest of nods to the duo who had actually done the smart thing and stayed outside rather than running in to help a set of strangers. He had hoped to possibly grab something before he had to leave since the two already inside were drawing the attention of the Stalkers, but it hadn't been possible. They were already too close to the entrance by the time he had entered. To have gone any further in would have been to court death. His anger boiled but his eyes remained cold, calculating. Looking down at the idiot and his babysitter, he glanced at the woman, noticing that she he a few smears of blood on her face. She must have been sprayed lightly when the arrow hit the Stalker behind her. Not her fault, and he supposed the polite thing to do would be to apologize to her, but his mind was far from polite at the moment, and instead he reached down and grabbed the boy, dragging him to his feet. When he spoke, his voice sounded harsh, almost whispered. He hadn't spoken in some time and it was obvious. He hadn't needed to. Not since he had left his cabin.
"You..... You insufferable, idiotic, insignificant little ingrate. You bumbling, bare assed, buffoon. I should kill you where you stand. I have been waiting here patiently, quietly, for a chance to get inside that store. As soon as those monstrosities slithered out for the evening, I was going to sneak in and take what I could. You ruined that. You could have passed through quietly, and they would not have pursued you. Instead, they know you're here. All of them know you're here. That we're all] here. I don't know how, but I swear to this hellish earth that you're going to make up for this mistake. Even if I have to turn you into bait," he said, his eyes boring right into the boy. He meant every word. He wasn't normally one to interact with others, not since things had gone sour with his marriage, but this idiot..... He would work this idiot to the bone for every small bite of food, every ounce of supplies he had been forced to leave behind now that this store was lost to him.
