Innuendo aside, Im having trouble. My friends and I have decided to cover a Electric six song for a friends 21st birthday bash. We have yet to play together, but for now we're just learning our respective parts.
The song is called Dance Commander, I don't know if any of you know the song. But the trouble is I can't get enough speed with out messing up. Im having that trouble with plenty of songs, I can hit the notes in time and everything, its just that when I try and speed up the strings seem to hit something, giving a metalic twang to the sound. sad Any tips on how to it the strings properly? edit 12/03/2006 new problem see last post.

Hit closer to the bottom of the fret and make sure you press hard enough.

Well folks a firend came up with a suggestion. He says that the bassist in electric six uses palm muting at that point in the song...only one problem. I've learned it so far using my fingers, instead of a pick. gonk Is there anyway I can play the song with my fingers and still mute the stings for that part? I've been thinking of getting a thumb pick and then just switch styles when I need to mute?
Any suggestions?

ok man from now on, i am your helper k? anyway first off, Quote: Well folks a firend came up with a suggestion. Any suggestions? its called palm muting for a reason...i cant actually show you, you know since were talking via gaia. but ill try, 1. place the part of your hand from your pinky to your wrist very near the bridge. 2. place your thump behind the pickup (if there is one there). 3. play with your index finger (if you dont want to play with a pick). and also remember that there is a study to picking on bass, in fact you can pick up a book from a music store if you have to. as for your next statment, Quote: The song is called Dance Commander, I don't know if any of you know the song. Any tips on how to it the strings properly? alright, 1. the twang sound is frett-buzz, and sometimes (depending on the quality of your bass/strings) you cant help it. but the one way to combat it is to play more near the frett you're playing on. 2. if you're having trouble with speed, get a copy of the song and listen to it, then get a metranome and copy the BPM (beats per minute). then try playing your part in time. and a helpfull tip, in time you will be familiar with all of the notes and you will feel the notes before you play them, be one with the bass so to speak. i hope i helped you 3nodding

I think I understand what needs to be done. I have a new problem though guys. Well its not so much a problem, Im just wondering if there is anyway around it, or if there are any excersizes I can do. Im trying to learn a Phil Collins song, 'Easy Lover', now its all very well and good howeving Im having great difficulty in playing this riff. Its like the sadistic b*****d who wrote the song wanted to hurt people or something. eek CHORUS/SOLO: |-------------------| |*-3---3-1---3----| |*---------4---4-3-| |--------------------| 1 & a 2 & 3 4 & So yeah, its quite a strech from the first fret to the forth fret. I can do it, sortof....but I can't do it fast enough when I use my pinky. And if I use my third finger I can get the speed but...eh...perhaps I just need to do what my mom says, practice it slow, then try and speed it up ? *shrug* So is there anything I can do to combat cramping, does it get better?

well there is an excercise im doing, observe:
G ll -4-3-2-1-------------------------------------------------------------1-2-3-4- D ll ----------4-3-2-1------------------------------------------1-2-3-4----------- A ll --------------------4-3-2-1----------------------1-2-3-4--------------------- E ll ------------------------------4-3-2-1---1-2-3-4------------------------------
_______________________________________________________
and then move on to the next frett and do the same thing, only mix it up a little too, and use one finger at a time; use your index finger going down, and the middle finger going up, other way around if you want. this is a real good excercise to do for 10 min. a day. builds finger streangth/speed, calus, precision, timing, and speed; everything you need!

Nice excercise Osgood. Seriously man, it just sounds like your main problems are you can't stretch and you can't go fast without fret buzz. Both of which just take practice to fix. I used to have problems with both seeing how I have seriously small hands and that I pluck really fuggin hard. Both have been corrected by lots and lots of practice.
