☤_◦_The Best Kept Secret~A Crooked Romance_◦_♢♣♡♠ Written by Teddy Bear Cupcake and Irako of the Desert What starts out as a usual day, whether the usual is working at a hospital, beating people to death, or just sitting on the couch in your underwear eating cold burgers, isn't always a usual as it seems. Every now and then, what seems like the smallest event, can turn into a wave that changes your life forever. Sometimes it's having a patient die, sometimes it's losing a target, maybe it's something as simple as choking on a chicken bone the people at your burger joint missed in their homemade nuggets, and ever so rarely, it's meeting the person you think of as your one true love.
What starts out as a perfect thing, whether it's the family of a dead man forgiving you, someone you're afraid of getting hit by a car, or getting a free membership to the gym every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, isn't always as perfect as it seems. Every now and then, what seems like a blessing sent down to you by whatever figure you believe in, God, The Divine, or Fate itself, can turn into something much more horrible that can change your life forever. Sometimes it's a lawsuit from an unexpected source, sometimes it's an enemy healing from a dire wound, or it could be tearing your pectoral muscle clean off your shoulder while you're trying to do pull-ups, and ever so rarely, it's finding out the person you thought was your one true love is in fact, a murder whose life you saved.
The real trick to it all is finding out where your heart lies, and being willing to follow it to whatever end. ◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦ ☤_◦_The Good Doctor_◦_☤ Played by Teddy Bear Cupcake ☛ Character Name: Dr. Nora Taylor ☛ Age: 25 ☛ Height: 5'7 ☛ Weight: 133
☛ Physical Description: She's curvy with brown hair that reaches the middle of her back that she keeps up in a twisted bun. ☛ Personality: She tries to be very calm, but is excitable and casual by nature. She has a good sense of humor, finding most things funny, but is also very gentle, especially with her patients. ☛ Likes: Adrenaline, music, plays, feeling ritzy. ☛ Dislikes: Spiders, lairs, smug people, secrets (usually) ☛ History: Nora grew up in a pretty simple way of life in America. Her father had a job, while her mother worked at home. However, Nora found herself drawn more towards her brother and his games than playing with dolls with their neighbors. As she grew older, hanging out with boys more than girls, Nora began to almost be their caretaker, giving out bandages and such when someone got hurt. Her father, wanting his children to make something of themselves, paid for her to go to medical school. After graduating she moved to a bigger city and landed a job there. She also learned just how much she liked watching the glam life of richer people than her, even though she knew many of them had to lie and cheat to make their way up there, something that Nora never liked.
☛ Et Cetera: She has a small scar on her left elbow where she once saved her brother from a dog attack and got bitten. ◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦❤◦❥◦ ♠♡♣♢_◦_The Bad Mobster_◦_♢♣♡♠ Played by Irako of the Desert ☛ Character Name: James Gallo ☛ Age: 28 ☛ Height: 6' ☛ Weight: 170lbs

He's very competitive, which shows in his gambling habit. There is a hard edge to him that speaks to his rough life. ☛ Likes: Sweets, money, winning, expensive cigars, and good liquor ☛ Dislikes: Losing, spicy food, seeing a friend or gang member die, and being poor ☛ History: He was born to a prostitute and abandoned to eke out an existence on the streets when he was six. By age eight, a member of some gang took him in and began teaching him how to carve out a better life for yourself beyond just existing as a street rat. By age fourteen, he was inducted into the gang and officially started his life of organized crime. Over the years, he's cheated, murdered, laundered money, stolen, shot up bars, and generally been lawless. Through it all, he learned how closely people like him are to death. One stray bullet and his existence could end permanently. This mortality has driven him to become a brilliant shot with anything that has a trigger, extremely athletic and skilled in boxing, and earn a fearful reputation for ruthlessness. He worked his way up the ranks in his gang until he became their top assassin among the criminal community. He's never been outside the city in his entire life and has no concept of what life could be like without crime.
☛ Et Cetera: He knows what it's like to be desperately poor and to be a part of the city's underbelly, but he's learned proper etiquette in order to blend into high society when necessary. His acting skills are quite superb as well.

♠♡♣♢_◦_The Bad Mobster_◦_♢♣♡♠ James Gallo, Gang Assassin James Gallo, the Gallo family assassin, cursed as a wave of dizziness crashed over him again. Blood was staining his best tuxedo jacket and leaving drops on the ground behind him as he stumbled through a dark alleyway clutching his left shoulder.
Gotta get back home... Gotta get Lenny to look at this...
Home was another hour's walk from here, though, and he was losing too much blood. He lurched out of the alley and fell against the brick wall of a building, breathing heavily. Some folks out for a night on the town looked at him oddly, but he gave them a glare that told them to mind their own business. Thankfully, they couldn't tell that the damp stain on his black jacket was really blood, so they simply continued on their way, convinced they were seeing a drunkard weaving his way home.
He looked around, trying to get his bearings, and noticed the sign above the front door of a building across the street.
Smithsburg General Hospital Emergency Room? You gotta be kidding me.
It was lit up, and people were moving in and out. James rolled his eyes at the coincidence, but gathered up his flagging strength and staggered across the street, managing to make it inside. He made it all the way to the desk, ignoring the line of people, and leaned heavily on it. The nurse behind it scowled at him and was about to speak, but he interrupted her.
"I need a doctor bad. I'm bleedin' something fierce. If somebody doesn't help me now, I'll leave blood all over your nice waiting room and then die. You don't want to upset all these nice patients like that, do you, ma'am?"
The nurse glared at him, but when he released his left shoulder to gesture with his bloodied hand, she paled and nodded. Another nurse was called over and they both helped him through another door and down a corridor before placing him in a room filled with beds and privacy screens. His arrival sparked a frantic bustling, but he ignored it and leaned back on the bedpillows with a sigh. His fingertips were starting to feel numb.

☤_◦_The Good Doctor_◦_☤ Dr. Nora Taylor, MD Doctor Nora Taylor sat leaning heavily on a counter, tapping out a slow, rhythmic beat with her pen. She sighed, checking her watch. It was 12:24. That left a good four hours of her graveyard shift.
Her stomach rumbled. Nora took it as a sign to go on break. It didn't seem like anyone would really miss her. The Smithsburg hospital always had plenty of doctors on call. Usually the hospital would be busier than it was tonight. There was constantly binge drinkers, car accidents, and casino or bank shoot ups. Maybe it was because it was a Wednesday night... With a yawn Nora pushed back her chair, stretched, grabbed her shoulder bag, and was about to make for the door when Jill, a nurse, passed by her.
"Nora! Oh, it's a good thing I found you, we've got a man who just came in, he's bleeding pretty bad." she said. "Pushed his way right to the front of the line, Kenzie and I set him up in Room 206." She handed Nora a chart, the front page smudged with blood.
Nora wasn't sure if she was annoyed that she wouldn't get her food, or excited that there was something to do. "What kind of wound was it?]" she asked "...Oh, gun wound." she answered herself, reading further down on the chart.
"Do you need any help?" Jill asked as they hurried down the hallway. "He looked kinda rough."
Nora shook her head, "I'll be able to take care of it. I'm a doctor." she paused mid-stride. "Actually Jill...could you run out to Don's Late Night and get me something to eat? I haven't had anything since noon."
Jill gave her a look, "Why didn't you eat supper?"
"I wasn't hungry then.
"Nora, you have the worst foresight of anyone I know." Jill said, rolling her eyes. "I'll grab you a burger then."
Nora walked the rest of the way to Room 206 on her own. Peeking in through the door she saw the man she was to heal up, several beds down. Taking a breath she entered. A few of the patients called out to her, asking for time, or what was going on. Giving them quick one worded replies and a shining smile she made her way down to the bed.
The chart was filled out simply, the nature of the wound, the pain reliever they had given him, and, strangely that they hadn't gotten him to state his name.
"Hello." she said when she noticed he was awake, "My name is Dr. Nora Taylor."

♠♡♣♢_◦_The Bad Mobster_◦_♢♣♡♠ James Gallo, Gang Assassin Once the nurses had finished fussing over him and gave him a shot that made him feel like he would float away at any second, James relaxed in the bed and shut his eyes. When the privacy screen twitched aside, though, his eyes snapped back open to find one very good-looking women holding a clipboard. She introduced herself as Doctor Nora Roberts and he smiled at her, letting his eyes wander up and down in frank appreciation.
"How do you do, Doc? I'd be much obliged if you could slap a bandaid on this little scratch and send me on my way. Things to do, people to see. I'm sure you know how it is."
As she moved to start examining his wound, he took the opportunity to study her more closely. She was definitely easier on the eyes than old powder keg Lenny was, and smelled nicer, too. Instead of the sterile, faintly sickening tang of the hospital, she smelled like clean soap.
"Though if you require a more extensive examination, I wouldn't say no."
His emphasis on the word 'extensive' and the waggle of his eyebrows he gave her made his true meaning plain.

☤_◦_The Good Doctor_◦_☤ Dr. Nora Taylor, MD Mr....James Gallo. Nora read on the clipboard. she tugged at the ripped dress shirt, opening it up so she could better see the wound.
"Looks like more than a little scratch to me...more than just a scratch in general." she frowned slightly, the bullet was still buried in his skin and it was deep.
Luckily it hadn't rammed itself into any veins or arteries, despite the extensive bleeding. It wouldn't be too difficult to pull it out, stitch the skin, and wrap a bandage. Of course, he would need some extra pain killers, Nora had taken care of gun victim's before, she knew how it would be throbbing constantly for the next week, then the biting pain any time he stretched him for a month after that.
Nora wasn't surprised with him. The looks, and the comments. It had happened before. Instead of replying she looked up from her work to his face and just smirked. She had learned much earlier on in her career that you couldn't let patients get to you.
Instead she started working on fixing him up. Pulling on sterile gloves and cleaning off a set of tweezers.
"If this hurts too much, just let me know." Another shop of pain killers wouldn't hurt him.
She put a pair of glasses on her nose to better see what she was doing. Carefully she poked the tweezers in into his shoulder, twisting it every so slightly until it tapped on the bullet.
"This is going to hurt." she warned Mr. Gallo. With a sharp yank she pulled the bullet out.

♠♡♣♢_◦_The Bad Mobster_◦_♢♣♡♠ James Gallo, Gang Assassin He stayed silent as she examined the bullet wound, face going a bit pale as she tugged his shirt down so she could see it better. If he could still feel pain after those nurses had filled him up with painkillers, how much worse could it be without them?
Tough as James Gallo was, he wasn't too keen on finding out. Instead, he watched Doctor Nora as she moved away and began pulling out instruments. His gaze went from licentious to wary as she turned around with gloves and tweezers. Her manner was brisk and businesslike, and his lewd comment had not provoked any kind of response. James would have expected at least a little bit of irritation.
She put on glasses, then held his shoulder and began probing the wound with the tweezers. He went totally white, focusing all his attention on maintaining stoic silence and not uttering whimpers. He was not about to show weakness to this doctor!
James was so focused on staying silent that he did not hear Doctor Nora's warning. She used the tweezers to yank out the bullet, and the room swayed uncomfortably in his vision. As she dropped it into a tray, he said hoarsely, "Are you always this tender to your patients, or am I a special case?"

☤_◦_The Good Doctor_◦_☤ Dr. Nora Taylor, MD He didn't look too good. But the little quip caused Nora to smile, even laugh a little under her breath.
"You are special." she admitted.
Pulling some cotton off the cart she first put some antibiotics on the wound. "This may sting." Nora said before applying it. It wouldn't hurt as bad as yanking the bullet out, but a burning sting would still hurt...at least Nora thought it would. Afterward she stopped up the bleeding, winding some bandages around his shoulder.
"You know, it's not often someone like you comes in with a bullet the size of a walnut comes in. Dr. Taylor commented. It was always important to make sure the person who came in with any kind of assault wound wasn't the assailant. It was standard procedure to check as much information as she could from him, in case the police needed to be notified.

♠♡♣♢_◦_The Bad Mobster_◦_♢♣♡♠ James Gallo, Gang Assassin James eyed the bullet and replied, "Oh, I'd hardly call a sixteen caliber bullet a walnut, Doc. Maybe a cashew or a macademia." He knew she was trying to get him to talk more about how he'd gotten the damned thing in his shoulder in the first place. As a gang assassin, he often was instructed to extract any information the target might have, so he recognized interrogation ploys when he saw them. He wasn't about to play her game.
Besides, he was enjoying her company. If she knew that he'd been sent to assassinate bait and had sprung the trap in the process, James had a nagging suspicion he'd find himself consulting with a prison physician pretty quick. He didn't have time to deal with that crap. He had to find out who'd set him up and why.
When Doctor Nora finished wrapping the bandages around his shoulder, James prodded them experimentally. They were a clean white and soft. He grinned up at the doctor and said, "Hey, thanks, Doc. So what do I owe you?"

☤_◦_The Good Doctor_◦_☤ Dr. Nora Taylor, MD Oh, so it was a sixteen caliber. Nora was tempted enough to roll her eyes and leave, but that wasn't the best idea when a patient came in with a bullet wound, and made sarcastic remarks. He seemed way to use to this. "What do you owe me?" Nora looked through his chart. "I don't know yet. But we'll see tomorrow. I'll need you to stay overnight so I can check for infections and we can make sure we've done all we can. Bullets aren't fun, even if they are the size of macademia nuts."
The experienced Doctor knew she would have to leave before he could object. She gathered up the bullet to check for any kind of missing pieces, or poisoning that could have been on it. It may have seemed unnecessary, but the poisoned bullet trick had happened once before at the hospital, and Nora didn't want it to happen again. The tests would take some time, and during that time, she could keep an eye on him.
Walking out to the hall, she was approached by Jill again, holding a take-out bag. "What timing." the nurse said. "Did you get the guy all fixed up."
Nora accepted the food before answering, "I need him moved to a single room Jill. And then some tests run on this bullet. It's a sixteen caliber." Jill raised an eyebrow and sighed, but went to do as she was told, getting another nurse to help her move the patient.

♠♡♣♢_◦_The Bad Mobster_◦_♢♣♡♠ James Gallo, Gang Assassin Before James could protest the necessity of overnighting at the hospital, the doctor had whisked out with the bullet in hand. Soon after, two nurses came in and ushered him to a different room with only one bed, where he was made to lay down in. They resisted his attempts to charm them into submission, so by the time they finally departed, he was scowling fiercely.
Great. I'm stuck in this goddamned hospital with nobody I can trust. I don't have any weapons on me except for that dinky little knife in my shoe, which are now way over by the door.
He scowled some more, but gave it up as a lost cause since there was nobody to be affected by it.
 On the other hand...
He might actually be safer in this hospital right now than he would be at the bolthole. Somebody had laid a trap for him, and whoever had done so wouldn't know where he'd run to right away. This hospital was a place he'd never been to before, so if the somebody went searching, it would be very low on likely hiding places.
I'll be able to at least sleep in peace for a night without having to keep both eyes open for trouble. Plus, there's that pretty doc. Having her take care of me is a huge improvement over Lenny. When I get out of here, I might just have to take her with me...
He closed his eyes and yawned, thinking of those gorgeous curves as he drifted off into sleep.
It was raining, and Mommy wasn't unlocking the door. She did that sometimes, and James knew she was playing cards with another man again. Normally, though, she unlocked the door the next morning.
She'd locked it three days ago and hadn't come out since.
James didn't mind being locked out for three days in a row, except that it was Sunday and raining. All public buildings were closed, and he knew better than to seek shelter anywhere else. Any decent spot would have already been claimed by bums, and a six-year-old wasn't about to try and compete with them.
James knocked on the door again, waiting patiently. Mommy would open the door eventually, he knew. She always did.
He woke up with tears running down his face, surrounded by the gray light of dawn.
Damn. Why'd I have that dream again? I already know how that story ends. Why do I have to relive it?
He attempted to sit up and pain lanced through his shoulder, making him gasp in surprise. When he looked around, he remembered where he was and why he'd wound up there.
Sonuvabitch, this hurts. Where're some nurses with meds when you need them?

☤_◦_The Good Doctor_◦_☤ Dr. Nora Taylor, MD Nora slowly blinked open her eyes. The sun was fighting it's way past the closed blinds in her bedroom. She let out a sigh, rolling onto her back letting the air blow it's ways out of her lightly closed lips, closing her eyes against the light. After a couple of minutes where she almost fell back asleep, she cracked her left eye just enough to take a look at the clock on her bed stand. It was 10:10. What timing. she reflected, stretching with a yawn. Well, may as well just get up now.
Sitting up, Nora's feet hit the wood floor. The small apartment, three rooms, was chilly, the heater seemed to have stopped working again. It was still early fall, but as winter soon approached, warmth would very much be useful. She put her hands around her arms, pressing down on the goosebumps. Her robe lay waiting in a small crumple on a kitchen chair she had pulled in as a makeshift desk. She pulled the pink garment over her shoulders, the warm fuzz of the fabric brushing against her skin down to her knees.
Walking barefoot into the kitchen, her slippers having been lost a good three weeks ago, and switched on the stove. Nora peeked into her fridge to find some sort of breakfast, finally settling on her last few eggs and milk. Cracking her shells into an old pan, Nora yawned again and headed into the living room to turn on the small heater that day after day managed to warm the small apartment.
Nora had just started on the breakfast, slightly burned and all together rather disgusting looking eggs when her phone rang with a harsh metallic noise. It wasn't hard at all for her to pull herself away from the food.
"Hello?"
"Hey Nora?" Doctor Timothy Stewrt asked on the other end. "Look, I need to take my shift off today," he sounded very rushed as he spoke, almost incoherantly through the other end. "My wife is out in Jonesville, she just went into labor. I need to get down there."
"Oh...oh! Well, congratulations Tim! Yeah, I'll take the shift...it's at 6...right?"
"Uh, sorry, it's at 11...this morning. I would have called sooner, but I know you worked last night and tonight, you were my last choice."
"Naw, it's okay. I had a patient last night...I guess I'd like to check in on him."
She placed the phone back down on the body. Rubbing her face in the realization of the exhaustion she knew she would be feeling later tonight, Nora went back to the table. Glancing up at the clock, she found it was already 10:30. Jumping up, Nora glared at the clock.
"Whyyyyyy" she groaned. It took a half hour just to get to the hospital, never mind getting ready. Nora stared at her measly breakfast. She could just grab something on the way. It would taste better.
15 minutes later Nora had manged to struggle into her closing, black skirt and dress shirt, and was hoping into her left shoe and grabbing her bag to get out of the apartment.
40 minutes after that she was walking into the hospital, polishing off the breakfast bagel she had picked up.
"Mmm, hey there Rebecca." she said to the nurse who was on call.
"You're late." Rebecca stated, not even looking up from the chart in her hands.
"...Um...yeah. Sorry about that. I didn't really get the message in time. I don't suppose there's any coffee brewed?" Nora hadn't had enough loose money for coffee with her breakfast.
Rebecca cocked her head to one side, not really giving an answer.
"...Sooooo. How's Mr. Gallo?"
That time Rebecca looked up at her, giving an almost condescending look. As though she knew something Nora didn't.
"What?"

♠♡♣♢_◦_The Bad Mobster_◦_♢♣♡♠ James Gallo, Gang Assassin Gritting his teeth, James prepared to push himself up out of bed when a nurse walked in.
"What the hell do you think you're doing? Lay back down!"
He glared at the nurse, who simply glared right back, then sighed and leaned back.
"Alright, alright, I'm down. Please tell me you have something for the pain."
The nurse had been carrying a paper cup, which she now slammed onto the bedside table in obvious irritation, making the pills inside jump. Then with exaggerated care, she placed the other cup that contained water next to it.
"Here's your candy, Mr. Gallo."
Gratefully, he downed the pills and water, then settled in to wait for them to work. The nurse began to bustle, still expressing her deep irritation through her movements as she took his temperature, pulse, and blood pressure. She finally finished just as the medication started taking effect.
When the pain turned into a numb memory, James sat up and swung his legs over the side of the bed. Nausea rose up in his throat, and he squeezed his eyes shut.
Ah, s**t. Maybe I shoulda stayed down longer.

☤_◦_The Good Doctor_◦_☤ Dr. Nora Taylor, MD "Well someone is having a bad day." Nora muttered as she entered the hospital room. She grinned at Mr. Gallo, "Did I say that out loud?" she joked.
Nora glanced over the chart in her hand. "Soooo. From what I've heard, you seem eager to keep life moving along. I think I can arrange a discharge for you. So long as you promise not to go out and get yourself shot again before you completely heal."
Exhausted as she as, Nora refused to let anything slip by her when giving his final examination. She cleaned and rebound his wound, checked for head trauma and shock.
"Looks like you've got a clean bill of health Mr. Gallo." Dr. Taylor said making one last mark on her clipboard. "Well, besides the uh..." she motioned to his shoulder. "Anyway, I'll need you to sign....here." she flipped to the last page.
As the good doctor led her patient to the door with a bottle of prescription pain killers.
"I would tell you I hope to see you again, but considering my position that doesn't seem like a good farewell."
