Lessons with Cosmos were over for the morning, but now came the fun lessons for Chelsie's three winged children. Rhu, Cera and Jade raced each other to see who could get to the Glory leaders cave the fastest. Their wings had finally filled out enough that Lord Baldur had determined it was prudent to start teaching them how to use them. Seeing as how the only other winged member of the Glory was currently out on patrol, the task fell to him. This would not be the first time he had taught yearlings how to fly, but it had been a while, and he was hoping these three would be somewhat good students.

"Rhu! Wait up," cried Ceratia, as her brother pulled out ahead of her and her sister Jade.

"No way!" he called back over his shoulder. Being the only boy, in a family with four sisters, he was not about to let either of them beat him. He was determined to be the first one to arrive for their first lesson. As he came racing around the huge boulder that bordered the leaders cave, he ran smack into Lord Baldur, who was standing there awaiting their arrival. "Oh! Uh! Excuse me Lord Baldur! I'm so sorry sir! I didn't expect you to be there!" Rhu stammered out his apology as the two girls came trotting up behind him.

"Always expect the unexpected Rhubicon," said Lord Baldur in a deep, husky voice. "It just might save your life one day." He turned his attention to the girls and continued. "Greetings Ceratia, Jade. Are you both ready for your first lesson?"

"Oh yes," they replied in unison, with Rhu chiming in after them.

"Well then, let us get started," he said, and directed them to follow him a short distance to an outcropping of rock. Once there, he instructed them to do some exercises that were designed to strengthen their wings. As they attempted to follow his direction, he stood off to the side and watched. The girls seemed to find the exercises easy enough to do, but he could tell that Rhu was becoming frustrated. He walked over to the young colt and asked, "What's bothering you Rhubicon?"

Rhu stopped the exercise and with his head hung low answered, "I don't see why we have to do these silly exercises Lord Baldur. My wings are plenty strong enough to hold me up in the air." All he really wanted was to fly.

Baldur called the girls over and began to explain to them the dangers of flying. All these three had ever seen was himself and Wilca in the air over the Glory. What they did not yet understand was how dangerous the air currents over the mountains could be to a flying unicorn. We told them of the day Wilca had come to the Glory, and how she had been flying over the mountains when she was caught unawares in a strong down draft, and came crashing uncontrollably to the rocky ground. He told them of her broken wing, and the other injuries she suffered, and he could see the shock and fear in their eyes. Looking at Rhu he said, "Do you see now young Rhubicon, why it is so important that your wings be strong, and that you learn the necessary precautions and lessons before you take to the sky? If that can happen to a full grown unicorn, think what could happen to one of you?" He dismissed them for the day, and told them to continue the exercises he had shown them until their next meeting. They thanked him for the lesson and headed back to the home they shared with their mother.
